Singing and dancing – operas, operettas, waltzes and polkas – are the themes for our December concert, a treat of entertaining, well-known music which will leave you feeling warm, happy and ready to begin the festive season.

The Radetzky March was written by Johann Strauss Sr. in 1848 to honor a victory by Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky. Traditionally, the Vienna Philharmonic plays it as the finale at their annual New Year’s Concert.

Austrian composer/conductor Franz von Suppé is noted for his four dozen operettas, but his Poet and Peasant Overture is Maestro Luis Haza frequently remembered as the sound tracks for both movies and cartoons and is regularly performed in Symphonic “Pops” concerts.

The famous Beer Barrel Polka – “roll out the barrels!” was made popular during World War II by the Andrews Sisters.

Although Johannes Brahms is known as a serious composer of large, complex musical structures, some of his most popular and widely known compositions are his Hungarian Dances. Hungarian Dance No. 6 was originally arranged for piano but later orchestrated.

Gaîté Parisienne – “Parisienne Gaiety” – is a one-act ballet, premiering in 1938 but set in the French Second Empire, 1850 – 1870. Jacques Offenbach was the best-known French composer of the Empire. The ballet includes a rousing “can-can”, usually danced in a chorus-line as Offenbach’s “infernal galop” from “Orphée aux enfers” – Orpheus in the Underworld.

Christmas is not complete without Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, a ballet based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 fairy tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”, about a little girl who goes to the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve. Tchaikovsky took the Waltz of the Flowers, Pas de Deux, and other ballet pieces, to form the Nutcracker Suite. François Borne’s Carmen Fantasy is a fast-paced selection, based on themes from Bizet's famous opera Carmen with our guest artist, flutist Mindy Heinsohn. After intermission, we will hear more from Franz von Suppé. His Morning Noon and Night in Vienna Overture was written to get the attention of the audience, quiet the house and set the scene for the operetta. Dmitri Shostakovich wrote the Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 2 in 1938. Stanley Kubrick chose its Waltz No. 2 for his movie “Eyes Wide Shut”.

The happy and spirited Trish Trash Polka was written in 1858 by Johann Strauss Jr. Trish Trash may mean gossip and will be recognized from its movie roles.

Berliner Luft – “Berlin Air” – has become Berlin’s anthem and was written in 1899 by Paul Lincke for his operetta “Frau Luna” – Mrs. Moon. Lincke was known as Berlin’s Johann Strauss

Guest artist, flutist Mindy Heinsohn, has performed in Europe, Central America, the United States and Canada. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2010. She holds a Master of Music from the prestigious Yale School of Music and a Bachelor’s degree from Peabody Conservatory. She is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and is on the faculty at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. She teaches at the annual Flute Fever Summer Flute Institute in Harwood, Maryland and presents master classes at La Escuela Municipal de Música in Guatemala. Mindy Heinsohn

DECEMBER 2013

The President’s Corner Did you hear the buzz? If you were out and about in the Golden Isles on the days following the October CSG concert you may have heard it. We did. The buzz was the continuing open discussion in many public and private places about the concert and extraordinary performances by Maestro Luis Haza, the CSG and the sensational young Canadian violinist Caroline Chehade. Superlatives like amazing, fabulous, exciting and outstanding were repeatedly used. One patron marveled at Maestro Haza’s engaging and infectious passion for great classical music, another the strong chemistry between the conductor and the orchestra. The excitement and energy generated by the concert continues. We love it when artistic endeavors become an on-going topic of normal discussion in our community because it helps us develop a consensus on what the CSG should become as well as focuses our attentions again on the arts. Thank you to all who attended the October concert and to all who created and maintained the buzz!

Southeast Georgia Health System, a non-profit organization accredited by The Joint Commission, has served the health care needs of residents, including Brantley, Camden, Charlton, Glynn, McIntosh and Wayne counties, and visitors since 1888 with more than 2,300 team members. The facilities include two acutecare hospitals, two long-term care centers, three Immediate Care Centers, four Family Medicine Centers, Care Centers that specialize in Cancer, Breast Care, Orthopaedic & Spine, Rehabilitation, Wound Care, and more, as well as multiple physician practices. And now an affiliation agreement with the renowned Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville has opened the Wolfson Children’s at Southeast Georgia Health System and brought easy access to a broad array of pediatric specialty services closer to home.

And if you missed the October concert, you have three more chances this season to hear the CSG under Maestro Haza, with the next performance on December 16th at 8 pm in the Glynn Academy Auditorium. Don’t miss it, for it will be another musical treat!

Community Messiah Chorus sings Handel’s “Messiah”

As you may know, the price of tickets provides less than half the funds needed to stage the performances. Therefore, we are highly dependent on patrons such as you to make up the difference. If you like the results you have heard and are not yet a full supporter, please join us by making or increasing your financial commitment to the CSG. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, buzz on!

The chorus will be accompanied by organ, strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani under the direction of Christopher Goodson, Director of Music Ministries at Wesley, with emphasis on the baroque sound intended by Handel when he composed the work in 1741. The concert is being dedicated to the memory of Jan Lane Harper and her effervescent presence at the organ through 25 years with the chorus. There is no admission charge. Special thanks to Sharon Flores, Sibby Gruber and Susie Salvatore for co-chairing the event with such precision. Also to JoAnn Frick who did a superb job chairing the Preview Party which garnered record sales this year for that one night’s sale! So many did so much to make the Golden Elephant shine. We thank you all.

With Cabaret getting closer and closer, committees are busy at work weaving their magic into every detail. DECEMBER 2013

42 CYS members (above) were guests at the first Coastal Symphony of Georgia concert of its 2012-2013 season in October. Members filled the front two rows of seats and experienced a magnificent performance conducted by Maestro Haza who later stressed the importance to attend musical performances and to take advantage of any opportunity to support and further their appreciation of music. CYS is encouraging middle school students who are members of the beginning orchestra, CYSymphonette, to take lessons and to perform as much as possible. Through CYS, new Needwood Middle School strings instructor, Ms. Elaina Bass, a BHS graduate Georgia Southern University graduate, is offering weekly private and small group lessons at Needwood, together with instructor CYS Assistant Concertmistress and BHS senior Stephenie Powell.

l-r: Jennifer Huerta, Ms. Bass, Melissa Sheffield and Zhane Wayne

Pictured left are a trio of seventh grade CYSymphonette members before they performed to a packed audience during the school’s annual Salute to Veterans.

Todd and Shannon Lockwood, Jacksonville Symphony musicians, have served as CYS camp and school year instructors for four years. This year, both have expanded their connection with the CYS by working one day a week with Nathanial Roper’s orchestra class at Glynn Academy. Each year, CYS middle and high school students attempt to qualify for the All-State Orchestra. This year, with extra instruction from the Lockwoods, a record three CYS members qualified at the regional level. All three will compete in Atlanta in January. Pictured left are, standing with basses, Shelbey Robinson (left) and Todd Lockwood (right), and seated with cello, Faye Chu (left) and Shannon Lockwood (right). Chu also placed out of the first round of the statewide Governor’s Honors competition and will compete in Atlanta on another January week-end.
