NPN’S SCHOOL SEARCH TIPS 1. D etermine your family’s school search criteria. Consider factors such as cost, location, public or private, schedule, after-school programs, etc. 2. G o to the NPN Schools page (npnparents.org/schools) to: a. Download your NPN School eDirectory. (NPN members only)  b. Visit the NPN Online School Directory and enter your search criteria/ must-haves to explore the right schools for your family. (NPN members only)

6. Attend NPN’s Chicago School Choice sessions. Panelists and school search experts will discuss the process and answer audience questions. Visit npnparents.org/groups/chicago-school-choice to find upcoming programs. (NPN members only) 7. S ign up for school tours and open houses in the fall. Visiting a school, seeing the students, and talking with teachers and staff face to face will help in your decision.

3. Use the NPN My Directory to narrow down your search. a. Save up to 30 schools on your list. b. View your schools on a map. ownload your list to Excel or a customized PDF to use as you go. c. D (NPN members only)

8. Attend the NPN School Fairs. More than 100 public and private preschools and elementary schools send representatives to meet parents, giving you one-stop access to make personal connections, consider new options and determine next steps in the application process.

4. D ip into the NPN Discussion Forum. Search within existing post categories such as “preschoolers” and “school days.” Or start your own topic!

9. A sk your friends, acquaintances, neighbors, and co-workers for their opinions on the schools you are considering. Parents are usually willing to talk about the school their child attends.

5. Take advantage of CPS resources: a. C heck out your CPS neighborhood school. Identify your neighborhood school (schoollocator.cps.k12.il.us/) and talk to parent groups for firsthand feedback and plans for the near future. b. Visit the CPS Office of Access and Enrollment (cpsmagnet.org) for information on magnet, magnet cluster, open enrollment, selective enrollment schools, and more. c. Get updated information on Chicago Public Schools (cps.edu).

10. R emember, there is likely more than one solution for your family. Try not to get your heart set on one school. Spread your net as wide as possible. Many schools accept students off their wait list and you can reapply every year.

2017 Admission Applications due December 7, 2016

CPS Elementary School Terms CHARTER schools are independently operated and not subject to the same state laws, district initiatives, and board policies as traditional public schools.

CLASSICAL schools provide a challenging liberal arts curriculum (1 year above grade level) for students with high academic potential. Testing is required.

MAGNET CLUSTER schools have a neighborhood attendance boundary and accept students who live within that boundary. Students who live outside of the attendance boundary must submit an application in order to be considered for acceptance, and students are selected through a lottery on a space-available basis. Magnet cluster schools focus their curriculum on a particular subject area, such as fine and performing arts or technology.

OPEN HOUSE

MAGNET schools specialize in specific subject areas such as Montessori, International Baccalaureate, math and science, humanities or dual language immersion. Students are selected through a lottery. Magnet schools do not provide an accelerated curriculum.

OPEN ENROLLMENT schools are neighborhood schools that do not have a magnet program, but accept students from outside of the attendance boundary, on a space-available basis, through the application and lottery selection process. Priority is given to families within the school’s attendance boundary. REGIONAL GIFTED CENTERS provide highly accelerated instructional program (2 years above grade level) in all subject areas. Testing is required. SELECTIVE ENROLLMENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS are for academically advanced students. Testing is required. This “umbrella” term includes: Classical Schools, Regional Gifted Centers, Academic Centers, and International Gifted Programs.

ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS Now that you are here at the school fair, asking the right questions of a school representative is your next step. But what should you ask? Below are some of the most common questions parents ask when chatting with school reps, along with why the answers are so important.

1. W hat is the education philosophy? You’ll want to know whether it lines up with what you believe and how you want your child to learn.

2. W hat is the average class size, and what is the teacher-to-child ratio? An obvious question, but an important one: The smaller the class size and teacher-to-child ratio, the more attention each student receives.

3. W hat specials does the school have? Specials are classes in areas such as music, art, gym, drama, band and foreign language. Not every school offers them, so if any of these subject areas are important to you, make sure they’re also important to the school.

4. I s there recess? Recess is not a given, and if a school does have it, it may not be as frequent or as long as you or your child would like. Better to set your expectations now, or use this factor as a tipping point in choosing a school with a longer recess if that’s a priority for you.

5. D oes the school have before- and after-school care? If you’re a working parent, this question is crucial. Find out if the hours of the before- and after-school care work for your schedule, and if the cost works for your budget. Some schools offer care on-site, but others contract it out, which will likely have your child walking or being bused to another location.

6. W hat is the approach to standardized testing, and how have test scores grown over the years? This answer to this question will reveal the school’s academic priorities and how the school handles students’ stress when it comes to testing. How a school’s test scores are improving shows you its potential. If the scores are improving every year, that’s obviously a good sign. Even if the school’s test scores are not where you want them to be right now, they might be there by the time your child is in school.

7. H ow do teachers support students who are working above or below grade level? If students are excelling or struggling, some schools give individual work suited to their level, but other schools expect all children to move at the same pace as the rest of the class. Parents should ask this question so they can be prepared to supplement their child’s learning at home if necessary.

8. W hat is the discipline policy? Many schools use a strategy called “restorative justice,” which eschews punishment for mediation and agreement to solve problems. Others go the traditional detention and suspension route. How a school handles discipline reflects its culture and, with a few more questions (e.g., How many detentions and suspensions were handed out last year? At what point would the teacher or principal call a parent?), you can get a sense for how nurturing the administration is and how safe the environment is.

9. W hat opportunities are there for parents to get involved in the school? In many ways, a school’s success depends on parent involvement, from fundraising to helping their kids with homework to advocating for improvements. It also gives you a feel for “extra” activities a school might provide, such as movie nights, dances and winter celebrations, which often are organized by parents.

10. W hy did you choose this school? Don’t be afraid to ask a few personal questions. Ask a parent representative why they chose this school and what their child likes about it. What has surprised them about their experience at the school? Why do they recommend the school? If you are talking to a teacher or administrator you can ask them similar questions such as why they like working there and what excites them most about their school.
