PREFACE This first edition of Admiralty Distance Tables-Indian Ocean has been prepared by Lieutenant Commander C. J. de C. Scott, RN, and contains distance tables for the Indian Ocean and part of the Southern Ocean from South Africa to New Zealand, Red Sea, Persian Gulf and Eastern Archipelago. The tables have been compiled from the latest information in the Hydrographic Department, the distances have been completely re-worked, the areas re-arranged and the information presented in a different format from previous volumes of Admiralty Distance Tables. The following

volumes, or portions, of Admiralty Distance Tables are superseded. Volume II Volume III

INTRODUCTION 1. Selecting a route. The routes used for distances in these tables, which are the shortest routes, are not necessarily the quickest or most suitable for a particular passage: other routes may offer more favourable currents or conditions of sea, swell or weather. The choice of the best route is described in Ocean Passages for the World and the various volumes of Admiralty Sailing Directions: Routeing Charts show the principal commonly-used routes. Essential to this choice, is a knowledge of the shortest distance between the point of departure and destination, which can then be modified as circumstances require. It is these shortest navigable distances which are given in these tables. Where traffic separation schemes exist, they have not necessarily been followed.

2. Terminal positions. The geographical positions of the places tabulated, together with those of places mentioned in the notes, will be found in the Gazetteer. Most of the terminal positions are pilot grounds or anchorages given in Admiralty Sailing Directions, but some are positions on the most commonly-used tracks in the entrances to large ports, rivers, or inlets containing a number of ports. Consequently the named terminal position in the tables may be an appreciable distance from the place after which it is named, or from the ship's actual berth.

3. Depths. Where routes are available for ships drawing 10m, they have been used for the distances in the tables. Where there is not this depth, such as in harbour approaches or where there are off-lying shoals, the deepest recommended channels have been used.

Table 5b-South Africa ( ) North-west Australian Approaches. Table 5c-North-west Australian Approaches. (Index Charts 1 and 5) WEST ~ EAST routes Off the coast of Africa, Oct-April routes from Cape Town and Simonstown used in Table 5b run S to Cape of Good Hope station (36° 45' S, 19° 00' E) to avoid the full strength of the Agulhas current and to take advantage of the Westerlies, and thence to (S) before turning NE onto a great circle course through (U) for (W), (Y) and (Z). From other places, great circle courses are set direct for (W), (Y) or (Z). May-Sept routes, except that from Durban, join the parallel of 35° 30' S by great circle from the place of departure tangential to that parallel, or in the cases of Cape Town and Simonstown from a position 15 miles S of Cape Agulhas. The parallel is followed to (U) whence a great circle course is set for (W) or (Y). From Durban, a great circle is followed direct to (W) or (Y). Table 5b gives distances by summer and winter routes between South Africa and (W). (Y) and (Z). Off the NW coast of Australia, to reduce the risk of encountering willy-willies, Oct-April routes keep well to seaward. The coast is approached from (W), (Y) or (Z) as follows: (W) for places S of Yampi Sound. (Y) for Yampi Sound and Browse Island. (Z) for places Nand E of Browse Island. From (Z), Wyndham is approached through Osborn Passage, Darwin is approached either through Osborn Passage or by passing S of Roti and using N Sahul Passage, and ports farther E are approached by pa~sing S of Roti and N of Sunset Shoal. the outer of the shoals extending NW from Melville Island. Table 5c gives distances from (V). (W), (Y) and (Z) to the Australian ports by the tracks shown on Index Chart 5.
