O

n March 20,1991, Brother Michael Gaworski, fbp, our beloved founder, contracted a bacterial pneumonia that caused him to go into cardiac and respiratory arrest. He suffered a severe brain injury and quadriplegia. He was cared for by the Brothers at Queen of Peace Friary in Saint Paul until his death at the age of 45, on August 28, 2003. We are grateful to God for all He did through Brother Michael while he was here on earth and for the countless blessings we have received since his death that we attribute to his direct intercession.

May he rest in Eternal Peace

Brothers Fulfill Our Founder’s Vision: C

B

rother Michael Gaworski, fbp, our beloved founder, always envisioned the Franciscan Brothers of Peace having a special place of prayer and contemplation where they could be alone with God in silence and solitude. Brother Michael knew that the Brothers would be engaged in some very hard and demanding urban apostolates and would need such a place to be established in our own unique Franciscan spirituality. In 1995 the lifetime professed members gathered in a general chapter meeting and came up with a 15-year plan of action to establish a little “Spiritual Center” — where a chapel, friary, and a few hermitages would be built. While relatively little had been accomplished over the years due to a lack of funds, 2010 proved to be opportune to begin work since

the Brothers had finally secured funding for the project from a handful of benefactors. The Brothers consulted Archbishop John Nienstedt and his Ecclesiastical Representative Bishop Lee Piche of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, before seeking the permission from Bishop Paul Sirba of the Diocese of Duluth for the community to be present in his diocese and to establish the Spiritual Center with a chapel. Once Bishop Sirba had given his permission, some land was purchased near Finland, Minnesota.

All the lifetime professed Brothers were involved in the purchasing, design, and development of our spiritual center as well as the naming of the various buildings. It took almost two and a half years to complete this endeavor. Many of the Brothers worked alongside our contractors and all were involved with various duties and responsibilities.
