IN MEMORIAM DR. GAETANO VINCENT AMICO

IN MEMORIAM

October 20, 1920 – February 2, 2016

T

he I/ITSEC family lost a conference pioneer and a good friend, and the simulation industry lost one of its giants when Dr. Vince Amico passed away in February. The timeline of Vince’s professional life is rich with contribution, and marked along the way by returns to academia that increased the body of knowledge he brought to each new challenge.  Dr. Amico graduated from New York University in 1941 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. From 1941 to 1945, he worked on the design of naval aircraft as a stress analyst and project stress engineer. He entered the Armed Forces in 1945 and was assigned to the Static Test Unit of the Structures Laboratory at Wright Field as a structures research engineer. In 1947, he joined Republic Aviation Corporation, responsible for preliminary structural design of advanced aircraft and missile systems. In 1948, Vince joined the Office of Naval Research’s Special Devices Center in Port Washington, on Long Island, New York. In 1954, he earned a Master of Business Administration from Hofstra College (now Hofstra University). In 1961, Vince was awarded a patent for an instrument lighting device he had designed. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Engineering from Florida Technical University (now the University of Central Florida) in 1973, and served as the Special Devices Center Director of Research in Orlando, Florida from 1979 to 1981. Vince was the co-chair of I/ITSEC in 1979, the first year of its transition from the previous Naval Training Device Conference. He was instrumental in establishing the Institute for

14

Simulation and Training (IST) at UCF. He also served as a member of the Board of the Society for Computer Simulation (SCS), including service as Vice President for Conferences. He was one of the prime movers behind growing the simulation industry throughout the country, and especially in Central Florida, developing Master’s and Ph.D. programs in simulation at UCF. He also contributed to the development of a professional certification program for simulation professionals and the creation of a set of industrial classification (SIC/ NAICS) codes for the simulation industry. He also created the Vince and Beth Amico Scholarship Fund for high school students aspiring to study simulation engineering. Fittingly, in 2004, Vince was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science Degree from UCF. Vince received the I/ITSEC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. In addition to serving our conference, he advocated for advancement of the Simulation and Training industry, ensuring the future of the industry, and providing increased opportunities for students and graduates through his advocacy of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and workforce development programs. We will remember Vince for all these and many other contributions of quiet leadership and his never-ending quest for technical excellence. But for those of us who were fortunate enough to know him, we will most remember his kind, welcoming manner and the encouragement he so cheerfully provided to so many.

IN MEMORIAM COMMAND MASTER CHIEF JAMES DAVID POHLEN, USN (RET.)

J

im Pohlen, a longtime member of our I/ITSEC family, a professional colleague in the Modeling and Simulation industry, a Navy veteran, husband, father and friend, passed away on 25 July 2016 after a heroic battle with cancer. Jim joined the I/ITSEC community in 1996 as a member of the R&D paper subcommittee and quickly became the chairman of that committee. In 1999, Jim joined the Operations team and was named Deputy, Operations in 2002. He served in that position for 14 years. Jim was instrumental in all phases of operational planning for each year’s conference as well as its execution. Serving as a volunteer, Jim provided unselfish time, energy and expertise with the utmost professionalism to ensure that each conference was a success. After 35 years of service in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves, Jim retired from military service in 2011. Enlisting in the Navy and designated as a Supply Clerk in the 1970’s, he rose to the rank of Command Master Chief (E9). Recalled to active duty three times, Jim was deployed as part of Operation Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. During his civilian professional career, Jim applied his professional skills and experience at several Modeling and Simulation companies in Orlando. His expertise included logistics, project management, contracts administration and operations management. His career also included an overseas assignment in Saudi Arabia. Jim’s upbeat personality, leadership and personnel skills, patriotism,“can do” attitude and his limitless friendship will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
