History

The club was formed in August 1930 by a group of young men who for two years played on a make-shift course beside the river at Hoblers Bridge before moving to a site behind the racecourse. Two years later the club split; half moved to the current West Tamar site while the other half formed the Mowbray Golf Club. The original 9-hole course was on land leased from E. W. Freeland and covered what is now most of the second nine. The clubhouse was a small wooden affair that had been brought from the Mowbray site and was positioned near the current 10th green. With numerous extensions over many years it became a substantial building and served the club for many years. In 1946, plans were drawn up for an 18-hole layout and the construction of the full course went ahead and was first played in May 1948. Since that time every green except the 12th has been re-sited but essentially the layout has remained the same with new bunkers added. As the course was being built, members and friends could pay £50 and then be able to give

a name to that hole. Those names are still recognised to this date. More recent developments have been restricted to a slight lengthening of some holes and the swapping of the 9th and 18th holes so that the course finishes in front of the clubhouse. In 1962 the original clubhouse had served its useful purpose and a new clubhouse was constructed on the present site. This was extensively modified in 1993 and now boasts one of the best views from any clubhouse in Tasmania. Riverside has produced many outstanding players, both male and female, including excellent junior representation with some members progressing to professional ranks. w w w. r i v e r s i d e g o l f . c o m . a u | 7

The Course

Any golf club is only as good as its course and Riverside is genuinely proud of an 18-hole championship layout that puts it up there with the best Tasmania has to offer. The club has hosted several Tasmanian and Australian Championships including the Tasmanian Open in 1985, the Australian Women’s Championship in 1998, the World LeftHanded Golfers’ Championship, the 2001 Australian Girls Championship and the Tasman Cup. The most recent success was the hosting of the Australian Women’s Senior Amateur Championship in October 2014, with Trevor Herden, Director – Championships Golf Australia, paying tribute to Riverside and, in particular, the condition of the course. The layout plays as a par 72 for the men, measuring 5,984 metres, with two par-3s and two par-5s on the outward nine and three par-3s and three par-5s coming home. The women play a 5,274-metre course with a par of 73, benefitting from an extra shot on the difficult 5th hole, which they play as a par 5. The course tests all areas of a player’s game. There are holes where the golfer can take out the driver and have a crack, but others where position is key and more important than distance. Water hazards and fiendishly-placed bunkers must all be negotiated to shoot a good score, but once on the green those proficient with the flat stick will prosper with the true-running nature of the putting surfaces one of the features of the course. 8 | w w w. r i v e r s i d e g o l f . c o m . a u

The course that greets members and visitors every day invariably looks a picture, the immaculate presentation a tribute to the painstaking work of Course Superintendent Sam O’Keefe and his dedicated team of course staff. Everyone will have their own favourite hole, but the par-5 ninth is up there with the best. A magnificent double dogleg-shaped hole, it plays its full length due to the elevated green. Whatever you do, don’t go long! The same can be said of the 18th, a true championship hole if ever there was one and one of the most theatrical finishing holes in Tasmania. You play your approach without being able to see the base of the pin, but what you will see is the clubhouse gallery perched high on the balcony in eager anticipation of the action about to unfold. It’s not quite the same as having to hole out in front of hundreds of spectators to win a major championship, but it certainly adds a little extra pressure to those finishing up on the 18th green and has induced many a nervous shot! Even on days when the putts refuse to drop, there is much to enjoy, with the River Tamar close by and abundant wildlife and birdlife to be admired.

Members’ Golf

Reciprocal Clubs

Riverside Golf Club is the club for all players. Golf in all forms is available for those wanting competition or social golf. There are 9 and 18 hole events and beginner’s coaching available with the Club Professional.

Riverside Golf Club has reciprocal relationships with a number of other golf clubs across Australia and one in New Zealand. These provide added value to memberships and allow members to enjoy golf on other fine courses at little or no cost while away from home for business or pleasure.

Men, women and juniors all have a full programme of golf within the club as well as pennant with intrastate rivalry.

The ladies have competitions on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Within these competitions there are eclectic, consistency events as well as knockouts. Annual major honour board events include the Club Championship, the ladies Foursome Championship and Mixed Foursomes.

It is recommended that members check with the office prior to visiting a reciprocal club in relation to any special arrangements and regarding details of current participating clubs as the list is regularly updated. Current reciprocal clubs are:

Open Day, Guest Day, Benevolent Day and the Melbourne Cup game and luncheon are popular events where we welcome visiting guest golfers.

TASMANIA Seabrook Golf Club, Wynyard Kingston Beach Golf Club, Kingston Beach

Seven day membership is open to males and females with six day membership available to those who choose not to play on a Saturday. The men have seven members in a pennant team with the matches played during March, April and May. There are Northern and State pennant finals for Divisions 1, 2 and 3 and Division 5 is played as a handicap pennant. The ladies have five members in a team with teams playing handicap matchplay. All teams are eligible for the State finals if they win a Golf North flag. The club has had success winning many Northern and State pennant flags. The men have a Wednesday competition which is open to visitors as well as a Saturday competition for club members. For those with time constraints a 9 hole competition has been introduced on Saturdays. With the introduction of the Golf Australia slope system all cards are used for handicapping purposes. An important event for the men is the Bass Strait Trophy which is an annual, interstate, interclub team’s event held with Green Acres Golf Club, Victoria.

1 6 | w w w. r i v e r s i d e g o l f . c o m . a u

Our juniors participate in a holiday program run by Golf North and an annual Junior Championship is held within the Club Championship. Riverside has a strong junior group which has won Northern and State events over the years. The Vets (Veteran Men) hold a Monday competition. Many golfing trips to other Northern and North Western clubs are enjoyed. A triangular series with Mowbray and Launceston Golf Clubs with a barbecue after is a regular highlight. During daylight saving a 9 hole competition open to all members is played on a Wednesday and Friday afternoon. On most days there are some time slots where members and guests can play a social round. This provides new members with an opportunity to find their way around and get a feel for the course. At Riverside Golf Club we welcome all players to join us and enjoy the game.

Open for lunch daily, Frogmore Creek’s award winning restaurant offers an inspired a la carte menu created by Head Chef Wayne Smith, designed to match highly acclaimed cool climate wines.

Riverside Golf Club is dedicated to the promotion of golf among junior members. The club’s development program is successful and juniors can learn the game in a fun and safe environment. Junior golfers have access to regular clinics conducted by the club’s Professional Michael Swan on Thursday afternoons. Here they learn all the skills necessary to build a good golf game, ingraining a correct and repeatable technique that often eludes adults coming late to the sport.

There are a variety of junior competitions as well and for those showing an aptitude for the game, there is the opportunity to progress to represent the club in pennant competition. Riverside has produced some outstanding young golfers in recent years and won the Tasmania pennant title in 2011 and 2014.

Riverside has one of the largest junior memberships of any club in Northern Tasmania, but the state as a whole has seen a decline in junior participation over recent years and we are keen to reverse this trend as the sport has so much to offer. As well as being a sport that can be enjoyed over a lifetime, golf also teaches young people so many life skills such as common courtesy, good manners and playing by rules. The club has made junior membership fees extremely attractive, equating to just a few dollars a week for the under-18s. The entire family can therefore enjoy learning and playing the game together on a regular basis, a rewarding and affordable experience. w w w. r i v e r s i d e g o l f . c o m . a u | 1 9

Course Open to the Public

Clubhouse

You do not have to be a member to play golf at The Riverside Golf Club. The course is open to the public with green fees being payable at the Pro Shop. Visitors wishing to come and enjoy our picturesque golf course are made to feel most welcome.

The clubhouse at Riverside offers members and guests a home from home, a place where they can retreat after a day’s golf and relax in comfort, chat with friends over a relaxing drink, enjoy a coffee before going out on the course or grab a bite to eat.

Social golf is available most days outside the club’s designated competition times or other major events such as corporate golf days. We will do our best to fit you in and if you fancy a round during the week we should be able to accommodate you. It is always advisable to phone ahead to book a tee-time or to check with the club our competition schedule for the day.

Our staff and members are a friendly bunch and the great clubhouse atmosphere instantly puts newcomers at ease.

The major club competition days are Saturday (tee times reserved from 7.44am-1pm), Wednesday (8am-10am, 8.30am start outside daylight saving) and Tuesday (ladies’ priority until noon), so visitors may find tee-times difficult to access at these times. Check the club website for the up-to-date events calendar. 2 0 | w w w. r i v e r s i d e g o l f . c o m . a u

Discounts on green fees are offered to members of other Tasmanian clubs and there are special rates for guests of members and juniors. Golf clubs, carts and pull trolleys are all available to hire and visitors are encouraged to stay on for a bite to eat and a drink in the clubhouse after their round. Social golf groups are made most welcome and will also find Riverside to be an excellent choice for a memorable day of golf. To book your round, call the Pro Shop on (03) 6327 4043.

Fully licensed, a good range of draught and bottled beers are available, together with a choice of fine wines and an extensive range of refreshing soft drinks. A-la-Carte meals with menus for children are available on Wednesday and Friday evenings subject to bookings. Snack meals are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and during nominated events. Our caterers are held in high regard and an excellent service is also available for private functions and trade days.

If you like the atmosphere here but are not much of a golfer, remember we offer a non-playing social membership offering use of the clubhouse facilities. It’s great to have such a lovely setting close to the city where you can bring friends and spend quality time together. The club has a very relaxed, casual feel and offers a busy social calendar, celebrating important dates in the diary such as Christmas and Mother’s Day and major sporting events such as the AFL Grand Final and the Melbourne Cup.
