The mission of the International Baccalaureate Program at Pensacola High School is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.



FREE college preparatory program



Students can receive up to 45 college credits pending on where they attend university.



The program is consistently ranked in the top 100 schools in the nation by the Washington Post.



In the past five years, PHS IB has ranked in the top ten in Florida for highest SAT scores



83% of the Class of 2015 IB Students received AP Scholar recognition, indicating students passed 3 or more AP exams



The IB Class of 2015 was awarded over 15 million dollars for 96 students

The IB is implemented in the Junior and Senior year. Students are encouraged to think critically and to consider both their local and international environment. Through the Diploma Program, students have the opportunity to:

Pensacola High School International Baccalaureate Program: Pensacola High School is the first and only school in Escambia County to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) full Diploma Program. Students are allowed to apply from outside counties such as Santa Rosa County. The FL pre-IB program was first implemented in 1986, with the first IB class graduating in 1990. IB students are in the classroom with a full IB and AP schedule while also participating in sports, clubs, and activities. Students take a mixer of IB and AP classes to provide the most rigorous educational opportunities to prepare for University.  Today there are 480 students enrolled in the program.  Students are inducted into the IB Diploma Program in 11th grade after successful completion of the FL Pre-IB program (grades 9 and 10).  Students take written examinations at the end of the program, which are marked by external IB examiners.

Applying for the IB program

Students take IB courses in six categories:

Group 1: English Group 2: French or Spanish Group 3: History or Geography Group 4: Biology, Chemistry, or Physics Group 5: Math Studies, Math SL, Math HL Group 6: The Arts or another Group 2-4

Prospective students are welcome to come shadow for a day to see what it is like to be an IB student. The best days to shadow are on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Students need to be at PHS by 8:15 am and check in with the IB secretary. Students should bring a packed lunch. Please call 850-595-1500 ext 244 to schedule your visit.

-At least 3 subject groups must be taken at the “Higher Level” and 3 are to be taken at the “Standard Level.” Some students take 4 HL and 2 SL.

SL Options: 1-2 year course -Visual Arts -Theatre

-Geography 2-(1 year only) -Spanish/French -Math SL (Calculus) -Second Science

CAS—Students Service Project 

The CAS projects meet the following outcomes: plan and initiate activities, work collaboratively with others, develop new skills, engage in issues of global importance, show commitment and perseverance in their project, develop skills, and pursue new challenges to service the community. Students present their project in class to ensure all requirements are met.



Minimum of 50 hours of service between the Freshman and Sophomore year to help the community.



Minimum of 100 hour service project over the course of 18 months (Junior and Senior Year)



Students begin and lead various projects that focus on the local, national, and international communities.

Theory of Knowledge Course (TOK) - Junior and Senior Year 

As a thoughtful and purposeful inquiry into different ways of knowing, and into different kinds of knowledge, TOK is composed almost entirely of questions. The most central of these is "How do we know?". Students are taught how to be critical thinkers.



Through discussions of these and other questions, students gain greater awareness of their personal and ideological assumptions, as well as developing an appreciation of the diversity and richness of cultural perspectives.

Extended Essay—Independent Student Research Paper 

The extended essay is an independent, self-directed 4,000 word research paper that prepares for undergraduate research.



Students complete 60 plus hours of research in a subject area of their choice that relates to one of the six diploma subjects.



Participation in this process develops the capacity to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate knowledge.



Students analyze credible sources, develop a research question/ thesis statement, form conclusions, and properly cite sources.

Course Offerings Higher Level (HL) - Requires two full years of instruction starting in the IB junior year. Students must have a minimum of 240 hours of course content. Standard Level (SL) - Requires one to two years of instructions starting in the IB junior year. Students must have 150 hours of course content. All of our IB students must take a minimum of 3 HL courses and 3 SL courses for the IB Diploma. Students are allowed to take 4 HL and 2 SL.
