Dear Friends, As I was thinking about Advent, Christmas and the New Year I came across this poem which challenges us to be part of the Christmas story.

The census crowds were occupied When God first breathed and tears he cried; And for a world that's still in danger, Won't you be his living manger - this Christmas? A frightened girl, a worried spouse Left on the streets, no room, no house; And for a world that's still unsure, Won't you be his human stall - this Christmas? Nightshift workers, angel-driven, See the join of the earth and heaven; And for a world so full of woes, Won't you be his swaddling clothes - this Christmas? Far-travelled gold was a gift for him Who came as our sacrifice for sin; And for a world, so rich but poor, Won't you be his bed of straw - this Christmas? Hillside choirs sang out in chorus; To sing again, they're waiting for us; O, for a world that's tired and worn Won't you be the place he's born - this Christmas? So for us all maybe we can think what can I give to the world, to a neighbour, to a friend so that we do play our part in the Christmas Story this year. May your Christmas be a joyful time of celebration as we give thanks for the greatest gift of all. Revd Canon Ruth Crossley 3

SHOEBOXES: 46 boxes (a record) were collected in Levens and 3½ sacks of knits as well. Thank you! “Levens Hall Party”– To those of you awaiting news of this, there is a change. Richard and Naomi Bagot have invited us to hold an event in the Summer instead and provisionally we are hoping to hold a ‘Summer Evening in the Garden’ on Friday, 15th July when we hope to serve Canapés and drinks with some light entertainment (outside) with the added bonus of being able to look round the garden. In the Hall if wet. Arrangements are well in hand.

Saint John’s Church: Levens St John’s Levens PCC Notes from 4th November meeting The meeting considered the Mission Action Plan and how it continues to shape our practice. St John’s and the Methodist Church co -operate closely; a Methodist Church attends PCC and a St John’s member reported from the Levens Methodist Church Council Meeting and also highlighted the “All We Can” display at the church about Christmas giving. The Treasurer’s report was considered: donations made by the church and the fees payable to be a fair renumeration to organists and others at weddings and funerals. St John’s south wall has now been repointed. Work continues on the gutters; the external bells enclosure will have fuller attention shortly. JB

Manna House in Aynam Road in Kendal provides advice, advocacy and a drop-in support centre for those who are homeless, vulnerably housed, lonely or needing help. Gifts to help with food (most usefully nonperishables), toiletries, and warmth are most valuable and most welcome and will be put to good use.

Prayer Cycle. We invite you to join us in praying for our village; for those who live in it, those who work in it, and those who visit. Happy Christmas from Heversham Carol Singing on Friday 18th December Once again we plan to sing carols around some of the paved roads of our parish, bringing the message of Christmas to homes on our route and carrying out a collection for The Children's Society and CLIC Sargent (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood). We aim to start at Heversham Gardens and sing our way to Dugg Hill, ending at Holly Close, time permitting. All are welcome to join us - we need singers (you just need to be able to make a joyful noise!) and we also need collectors please, so you don’t have to be a singer to be involved. Meet at St Peter's Church gates at 7pm. Please wrap up warm, bring a torch and reflective clothing if you have any. We aim to sing for a couple of hours and finish with supper at Yew Tree Cottage, Woodhouse Lane to warm up! Please join us if you can - if you can't, listen out for us!

Churches Together in Cumbria – South Lakeland Credit Union Launched: 12th November 2015 A Credit Union is a Community Bank run to help members save, borrow and share profits. Savings are used to fund loans to other members at reasonable rates of interest and the interest on charged on loans is used to pay a return (dividend) to members on savings. The new Credit Union will take deposits and Standing Orders from November for savings and aims to offer loans to members from January. Services will be available online and through access points open for a few hours each week – initially in Kendal at Sandylands Methodist Church. This is an exciting opportunity to provide an alternative to doorstep lenders and High Street Banks and more volunteers are needed to help get these services to all communities in South Lakeland. If you are interested in volunteering please contact: [email protected]

Green corner Suggestions: As you buy Christmas presents and cards have a look at where they were produced and if possible go for the most local option or go for the option with the least packaging to reduce the waste that will end up in landfill. Maybe go for the virtual gift option and send a really essential gift to someone in real need, in a context that would be of interest to your friend or family member e.g.: a school kit for a child in Africa for a retired teacher in Britain. Oxfam in Kendal has a huge range of such gifts as do most charities. Better Consumer rights – in time for Christmas ! UK consumers spend on average a whopping £90 billion a month and December must surely be see the biggest spend. More than one in five people in the UK experience problems with goods and services. A quarter of them spend more than four hours trying to sort out these problems, one in ten having to take time off work to do so. The Consumer Rights Act came into force on 1 October 2015 and streamlines eight pieces of legislation into one. This should make life a little easier for shoppers. Most of the changes were important updates to existing laws. But two new areas of law were also introduced. For the first time rights on digital content have been set out in legislation. The Act gives consumers a clear right to the repair or replacement of faulty digital content, such as online film and games, music downloads and e-books. The law here had been unclear and this change has brought us up to date with how digital products have evolved. There are now also new, clear rules for what should happen if a service is not provided with reasonable care and skill or as agreed. For example, the business that provided the service must bring it into line with what was agreed with the customer or, if this is not practical, must give some money back. In addition, Alternative Dispute Resolution is now available to all businesses to help when a dispute with a consumer cannot be settled directly. The Citizens Advice Consumer Service can give advice and information on these new laws, telephone 03454 04 05 06 helplines are open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm, or you can download a leaflet type ‘Citizens Advice know your new rights’ into your search engine for the link within our website. Free, confidential advice and help is available from South Lakes Citizens Advice Bureau on any aspect of debt, consumer problems, benefits, housing, employment and any other problems. We have various outlets across South Lakeland and can also give advice over the phone – telephone 015394 46464 for an appointment and help. 13
