September 2015 Our Mission - Inspire a deeper and richer connection to Christ, our community, and each other.

Dear Friends, This coming Fall – through the stories and narratives of the Old Testament – we are going to be looking closely at some REAL LIFE stuff! Messy families, power and control, troubling times, restful times, sorrows and hopes. It's got me thinking a lot about the REAL LIFE stuff we deal with every day. Just the other day, in an online daily devotion I receive, the following quote came across my computer and it stopped me in the my tracks. Talk about REAL LIFE stuff! Arthur Simon writes, “Ours is a restless culture. Life has become excessively busy for a large portion of the population. Stress is almost built into our body clocks. I am not a fast driver, probably slower than most. But sometimes I find myself hurrying to get somewhere—switching lanes, passing traffic, going through yellow lights—when it occurs to me that the only thing putting pressure on me to rush is my own state of mind… Our wants are constantly expanding, and our income usually lags behind. More hours to work, more things to do, and more places to go create pressure. Far from producing a sense of inner peace, this style of life nurtures a spiritual void.” It seemed too true and too sad to not pay attention to it. Have we – in the filling of our lives – emptied our spirits? Have we given in to something without being fully aware of what we're giving up? Has our inner life paid the price for our outer wants and needs? And if so… where does that leave us? As we move into another year of program ministry at Lord of Life I want to invite you to take seriously a shift in your own life – a shift from “busy” to “invested” - a shift from “hurrying” to “being intentional” - a shift from “pressure” to “peace.” We can choose to approach life in a way that leads to inner peace and not spiritual void. We can choose to be connected to one another and to our God in a deeper way. We can choose to spend time in prayer – in God's Word – in worship – in service – in gratitude – in joy! Ultimately – God's Spirit does the work of filling our lives and bringing us to a place a peace. So may our hearts by open, our minds ready, our spirit desiring and may our prayer simply be, “Come, Holy Spirit, Come and fill our very real, messy lives with your life!” I'm looking forward to walking through REAL LIFE stuff with you and counting on God's Spirit to show us the way! In peace,

Interruptions can be viewed as sources of irritation or opportunities for service, as moments lost or experience gained, as time wasted or horizons widened. They can annoy us or enrich us, get under our skin or give us a shot in the arm, monopolize our minutes or spice our schedules — depending on our attitude toward them. LOLLY 55+ Potluck

Bible humor

LOLLY (Lot’s of Living Left Yet) will meet at the church Fellowship Hall at 11:30am on Wednesday, September 16th for a pot luck lunch, followed by a program by Jana Shogren from Bridges of Hope. For more information contact Pat Huhta at 218-855-1882 or Mary 218-330-6171.

We take Scripture seriously, of course, but God also gave us the ability to laugh — and it’s healthy to do so! Enjoy these Bible-based riddles: Q: Who was the fastest runner in the Bible? A: Adam. He was first in the human race. Q: Where is baseball played in the Bible? A: Genesis 1:1 reads “In the big inning.” Then Eve stole first, and Adam stole second. Cain struck out Abel, and soon everything was rained out. Q: Who was the best financier in the Bible? A: Pharaoh’s daughter. She went to the Nile bank and pulled out a little prophet.

On the road again…. With the arrival of September it is once again time to assemble a crew to clean up our adopted stretch of highway. The Social Concerns Committee is looking for volunteers to participate on what will hopefully be a beautiful, fall day. The more the merrier and quicker the job will get done! Please consider participating as a great opportunity for exercise, fellowship, and environmental benefit. If you’re a Confirmand, this may be a great opportunity for service hours. Please call or text Pat Einarson at 218-330-4804 if you have interest in helping out with this project and you will added to the list of potential volunteers and notified of more details regarding date and time as the event nears in September.

The Good News is published monthly. Articles for the October newsletter are due September 21st.

Q: What was Boaz like before he got married? A: Ruthless.

Working for God, serving others No matter your occupation, each day brings opportunities to honor God by helping other people. This applies to everyone from a prince to a laborer, as Martin Luther said: “The prince should think: Christ has served me and made everything to follow him; therefore, I should also serve my neighbor, protect him and everything that belongs to him. That is why God has given me this office, and I have it that I might serve him. … “The same is true for shoemaker, tailor, scribe or reader. If he is a Christian tailor, he will say: I make these clothes because God has bidden me do so, so that I can earn a living, so that I can help and serve my neighbor. When a Christian does not serve the other, God is not present; that is not Christian living.”

Pray & Ponder Begins Again

Women’s Circles

After taking a break over the summer, Pray & Ponder will resume again in September. This year we will be using a study from Spark House Publishing called Animate Practices as our guide. Women of all ages are welcome to join us one Saturday morning a month for breakfast, fellowship, study and laughter as we walk together in faith. It doesn't matter if you're new to faith, have little or no faith, or know the Bible inside and out. Pray & Ponder is a safe place for women to share questions, fears, experiences, or just listen. Come every month or come whenever you can. There are no books to buy and no homework or long-term commitment. Just come and enjoy spending a Saturday morning with some amazing women. We begin at 9:00 and are done by 10:30 or 11:00. This year's meeting dates are:  September 5, 2015  October 3, 2015  November 7, 2015  December 5, 2015  January 9, 2016  February 6, 2016  March 12, 2016  April 2, 2016  May 14, 2016 Questions? Interested but would like more information? Drop me an email at [email protected]. I'm looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces in September.

The women’s circles will begin a three-session study on speed and slowness, and how the Kingdom of God moves slowly, yet we are asked to move with even greater speed. The September session is Slow Faith: Sabbath Keeping
