THE ORGANIZATION SAIT POLYTECHNIC In 2003, SAIT became a founding member of Polytechnics Canada and was rebranded as SAIT Polytechnic in 2004. Polytechnic education is characterized by:    

close ties with business and industry to ensure programs reflect needs of the workplace diverse programming in technical, business and creative fields, with a balance of skills-based and theoretical learning a range of credentials from certificates and apprenticeships to bachelor degrees, and options to ladder into other credentials opportunities for students to participate in applied research and other innovative projects connected with industry.

Today SAIT offers 84 day-time programs and 34 apprenticeship programs, Continuing Education programs and courses and Corporate Training offerings. SAIT served 49,398 students in 2013/14. Programs are delivered through eight academic schools: Business, Construction, Energy, Health and Public Safety, Hospitality and Tourism, Information and Communications Technologies, Manufacturing and Automation, and Transportation. English language foundations and academic upgrading are also offered. Partners from business and industry serve on SAIT's program advisory committees to ensure students receive hands-on, practical training that reflects the needs of the workplace. These partnerships have also established seven Centres of Technology to enhance learning opportunities for students. SAIT is a leader in applied research and innovation, providing expertise and resources to industry and real-world learning experiences to students. SAIT delivers training in Angola, Kazakhstan, Australia and hosts learners from all over the world. SAIT was a founding sponsor of WorldSkills Calgary 2009 — an international competition devoted to raising awareness that the skilled trades and technologies are vital to the global economy. Some 150,000 visitors attended WorldSkills and the SAIT campus served as the Competitors' Village.

THE OPPORTUNITY DEAN, MACPHAIL SCHOOL OF ENERGY The role of the Dean, MacPhail School of Energy is to provide leadership and management to SAIT’s Energy School, and to develop and deliver programming that prepares SAIT’s learners with the business skills and knowledge required for success in the workplace. The energy sector is diverse and everchanging; the Dean must facilitate strong industry alliances to understand and identify how best to align curriculum and training to meet industry requirements. The Dean, MacPhail School of Energy reports directly to the Vice President Academic, leads a total team of 150 staff and contractors through 7 direct reports and administers a budget of $19 million. School programming currently includes a wide range of full-time credit and earned revenue programs, including:              

The Dean is a member of SAIT’s senior academic leadership team and will work with senior managers and executives to develop and implement sound educational strategies and academic and business practices.

Key Result Areas   

 

Actively support the development and delivery of high quality, cost-effective training products and services to SAIT’s business and industry customers. Advance SAIT’s Strategic Plan by engaging the School staff and faculty to develop a School plan that aligns with the Institute’s direction. Attend and contribute to institute activities to achieve SAIT’s Mission and Vision, and proactively enhance institutional teamwork (Deans’ Council, Management Council, other assigned committees, School events and student activities). Engage the faculty and staff within the School to address the issues identified in the annual employee survey and to enhance the working environment. Ensure academic excellence through the development of a quality learning environment by monitoring and acting on key performance indicator results.

Ensure program compliance with provincial/national accreditation standards as applicable and lead the School in striving for continual quality improvement. Establish and maintain contacts with industry associations and professional groups to proactively promote and enhance SAIT’s image. Evaluate the relevancy of existing programs and manage the development of new programs and courses to proactively meet the training needs of employers and the economy. Expand international learning opportunities for students and faculty. Implement strategies to expand learner access to the School’s programs without additional government funding. Maintain and develop strong industry relationships and alliances by supporting the ongoing development of and participating in Program Advisory Committees and industry Advisory Committees. Maintain currency on academic and industry issues and trends to proactively identify changes required in program content and delivery methodologies. Manage School personnel through the implementation of accountability agreements to ensure the achievement of key deliverables. Promote a SAIT approach to student recruitment through participation in career fairs, open houses, trade shows, conventions, publications and visits. Promote and maintain partnerships with industry to facilitate faculty professional development opportunities and student placements. Provide direction for capital, operating and revenue budget development, manage and control School expenditures, and engage faculty and staff in the financial planning process. Provide leadership to advance enrollment management practices in the School. Provide leadership to the School’s non-grant funded (earned revenue) business, including continuing education, distance education, corporate customized and international training, and career development programs. Support and promote Applied Research within the School to promote the development of innovative education. Support students in achieving their learning and career goals.

THE PERSON Required Qualifications The ideal candidate will demonstrate a progressive career which includes an appropriate combination of the following:   

Relevant business and industry experience in the oil and gas sector. Degree(s) in relevant discipline (i.e. Engineering). A graduate degree is strongly preferred. Management and teaching experience in a post-secondary institution.

To be successful in this position, the Dean, MacPhail School of Energy, must have a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective and engaging relationships with students, faculty, managers, support staff, senior executives and industry representatives. The candidate also needs very strong administrative and financial skills to be able to manage this diverse School, while still being a visionary and providing academic leadership on all levels.
