Arquitecturas confrontacionales = Confrontational architectures Son tiempos difíciles para la enseñanza de la arquitectura, tanto como los desafíos o las responsabilidades que esta tiene en el contexto de un mundo en crisis y de un planeta ambientalmente devastado. En este escenario, cuáles son las relaciones entre las dimensiones de la habitabilidad del hombre contemporáneo y el rol de la arquitectura en la voraz expansión de las ciudades? Qué estrategias pedagógicas se deberían explorar para formar un arquitecto capaz de contribuir a revertir estas tendencias de crisis, banalización de la arquitectura e implosiones urbanas? Encarar esta situación desde la pedagogía de la arquitectura permite dilucidar nuevas formas de enseñanza en una situación global en que la construcción de edificios y la evolución urbana responden cada vez más a factores ajenos a las competencias tradicionalmente atribuidas al oficio. Con el objetivo de poner en debate estas cuestiones, la facultad de arquitectura y urbanismo de la PUCP convocó en el 2005 a un grupo de notables arquitectos y pensadores para reflexionar sobre el tema, en el seminario internacional que tuvo por título Arquitecturas Confrontacionales. El presente libro contiene las ponencias y la transcripción de los debates suscitados en él. Ideas fuerza: una arquitectura más acorde y comprometida con la realidad y con la época. La reivindicación plena del valor del paisaje y la historia en el ejercicio de la arquitectura. El fomento por una educación profesional menos instrumental. Y, por último, la apuesta por un entendimiento de la arquitectura como una autentica forma de vida.

Arquitectura, pedagogía e innovación Centros de Innovación Tecnologica-Proyectos de fin de carrera Diversas razones me llevaron a regresar a Perú en 2006, luego de una larga permanencia en Europa, entre las cuales, estaba hacerme cargo de la organización y dirección del taller de Proyecto de Fin de Carrera (PFC), de la recientemente creada Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Luego de una experiencia docente de casi seis años en la Ecole d 'Architecture de París-Belleville, dónde pude madurar una cierta visión sobre la enseñanza, se me daba la oportunidad y el reto de (re)pensar integral mente la pedagogía de un taller en Perú, tarea que acogí con gran seriedad y entusiasmo. Si bien tenía en claro que necesitamos formar arquitectos comprometidos proactivamente con la realidad peruana: futuros profesionales capaces de realizar proyectos de un alto valor propositivo y entrenados para afrontar con inteligencia cualquier situación arquitectónica, encontrando oportunidades en las limitaciones del medio, me quedaba menos claro de qué manera esto podía ser logrado. Este libro es un balance de estos primeros dos años de búsqueda paciente.

Arquitectura: crítica y nueva época LOS NIÑOS, LOS LOCOS, ENRIQUE BROWNE: Se afirma que sólo los niños y los locos dicen la verdad, pero Enrique Browne merece ser incluido en esa relación. Su texto sobre la crítica arquitectónica y nuestro tiempo transmite una inmediata sensación de autenticidad, y es difícil leerlo sin ser arrastrado por su caudaloso torrente de reflexión: atropellado y arremolinado como las aguas de marzo, pero a la vez impulsado por una genuina búsqueda de la verdad en la arquitectura y en la vida. Enhebrando experiencias arquitectónicas, ensayos sociológicos y noticias periodísticas, construye con imágenes, citas y reflexiones un retrato pixelado del mundo en que vivimos, y en el que procura orientarse como persona y como profesional. Escuchando su voz libre y sin prejuicios, sentimos que su búsqueda de conocimiento es genuina, y que dice verdades como sólo es frecuente escuchar en labios de los niños o de los locos.

Arquitectos/arquitectas pioneros/pioneras El libro presentado y editado por el Dr. Wiley Ludeña Urquizo, tiene 5 interesantes trabajos de investigación realizados por estudiantes de la Facultad, todos estos trabajos se refieren a la vida y obra de Arquitectas y Arquitectos Peruanos que son considerados pioneros en la profesión en el Perú: El primer trabajo es sobre la Obra en el Perú del Arquitecto Julio Ernesto Lattini, autor entre otros trabajos del célebre Teatro Segura y de la Iglesia del Corazón de María en Magdalena del Mar. El segundo se refiere al Arquitecto Augusto Benavides Diez Canseco y su " estilo andino" que logró utilizando piedra, tejas, balcones y arcos hispanos. El tercero trata sobre cuatro de las seis primeras arquitectas diplomadas en el Perú: Doris Clark, Angélica Zegarra, Bertha Zegarra y Hilde Scheuch, ellas representan el surgimiento de la mujer en la profesión. El cuarto nos presenta al exponente de la modernidad y transición y del estilo "buque", el Arquitecto Augusto Guzmán Robles. Finalmente, se presenta la obra del Arquitecto Santiago Agurto Calvo, la arquitectura como compromiso, los aportes de este profesional recientemente fallecido a la arquitectura y urbanismo del país.

Deserta es un libro en el que convergen muchos y aparentemente diferentes puntos de vista, que sin embargo tiene como centro una preocupación principal: ¿cómo pensar al desierto como ámbito donde, paradójicamente, también se habita y se trabaja? ¿con qué bagaje técnico pero también intelectual debería abordarse este problema? En definitiva ¿cómo construir y generar arquitectura e infraestructura en una región de clima extremo como Atacama? Para dar una respuesta a estos interrogantes, el autor del libro, Pedro Alonso, ha congregado a un conjunto de personalidades que desde su disciplina o ámbito de intereses han abierto perspectivas al respecto y que, de una u otra manera, no han olvidado la dimensión productiva que tiene el desierto. META : diez pabellones para Chile = Ten pavilions for Chile En 2010, luego de uno de los terremotos más intensos registrados en la historia moderna –y ante la pregunta recurrente sobre cuál era el aporte que un arquitecto podía hacer para la reconstrucción de la Región del Bío Bío– el estudio chileno-argentino Pezo von Ellrichshausen, desde Concepción, dio una respuesta ambiciosa y concreta, llamada por ellos mismos proyecto META. La iniciativa se ha concretado gracias al apoyo sustancial del programa InnovaChile de CORFO. META se propuso, en palabras de sus promotores, “restituir las identidades locales” de 10 pequeños poblados costeros: Cobquecura, Coliumo, Penco, Tumbes, Isla Santa María, Llico, Tubul, Lebu, Quidico y Tirúa. Para ello, gestiona el proyecto y diseño de un pabellón en cada uno de estos pueblos, pensado como un pequeño edificio de infraestructura cultural que pueda contribuir a reactivar la vida pública de estas comunidades. Cada pabellón fue encargado a un estudio de arquitectura distinto: Alberto Campo Baeza (España), Adamo Faiden (Argentina), Johnston Marklee (EE.UU.), Studio Mumbai (India), Pezo von Ellrichshausen (Chile), Sean Godsell (Australia), Paulo David (Portugal), Rintala Eggertsson (Noruega), Sergison Bates (Inglaterra) y OFFICE Kersten Geers David van Severen (Bélgica) integran la lista de convocados. Un epílogo a cargo de David Leatherbarrow enuncia una lectura posible del conjunto de proyectos.

Marsino arquitectos universidades y colegios El trabajo de Jorge Marsino y su socia María Inés Buzzoni, en conjunto con Claudio Santander y Diego Achurra continúa una trayectoria iniciada con el arquitecto Manuel Moreno; en sólo diez años, este estudio ha generado un cuerpo significativo de obras que mayoritariamente están vinculadas a usos públicos, especialmente educativos. Este volumen registra esa parte de la producción arquitectónica de Marsino arquitectos entre 2000 y 2007, presentando una detallada selección de fotografías y planos. Desde propuestas para el desarrollo de campus universitarios (en Santiago, Arica y la región de Valparaíso) hasta edificios para colegios se trata de un conjunto determinado por una agenda permanente: la construcción de una experiencia colectiva memorable para los estudiantes.

El patrimonio arquitectónico industrial en torno al ex Ferrocarril de Circunvalación de Santiago : testimonio del desarrollo industrial manufacturero en el siglo La construcción de importantes estructuras con el fin de acoger los procesos industriales y de transporte se ha convertido en un valioso legado que es necesario poner en valor en el panorama patrimonial y cultural; estructuras hoy en peligro de desaparecer producto de cambios de destino o de proyectos inmobiliarios en extensión o altura. Sin embargo, el mayor peligro asociado a lo anterior es el desconocimiento del valor patrimonial y cultural de estas estructuras “invisibles”, aún no reconocidas. Esta publicación busca poner en valor un número no menor de edificios y conjuntos industriales de carácter patrimonial que debieran sobrevivir y permanecer como testimonio vivo de un pasado que permitió la construcción de nuestro presente. El libro es el tercero que publican los autores en lo que se refiere al descubrimiento y puesta en valor del patrimonio arquitectónico nacional, siendo los primeros “Ciudades y Arquitectura Portuaria” (1ª edición 1994 y 2ª edición 1998) y “Las Estancias Magallánicas” (1999, con la participación del historiador Mateo Martinic), todos ellos forman parte de la Colección Imagen de Chile de Editorial Universitaria.

A pesar de sus rasgos propios y distintivos, comparte con otras grandes ciudades el hecho de que no puede ser pensada ni proyectada a partir de un solo mecanismo; su desarrollo necesita de una batería amplia, compleja y cambiante de herramientas. Los autores de este libro, los arquitectos urbanistas Margarita Greene, José Rosas y Luis Valenzuela, presentan y conceptualizan el proyecto urbano, quizás una de las herramientas más maduras y realistas en términos de conciliar las múltiples fuerzas y conocimientos que se hacen necesarios allí donde el fenómeno metropolitano aparece en toda su complejidad. La arquitectura moderna en Chile (1907-1942 ) : revistas de arquitectura y estrategia gremial Este libro destaca el rol de los arquitectos que, agrupados en asociación gremial, fueron capaces de impulsar en un periodo de treinta y cinco años (1907-1942) cinco grandes iniciativas: la creación del Colegio de Arquitectos, el apoyo a la formación de Facultades de Arquitectura, la participación en los Congresos Panamericanos de Arquitectos, la aprobación de reglamentos de edificación y la publicación de revistas, instaurando la transformación más importante de la arquitectura después de la introducción académica de la disciplina en el país, iniciada en 1780 con la llegada del arquitecto Joaquín Toesca y Ricci. Transmutaciones culturales que excedieron la arquitectura y comprometieron la economía, la producción, la política y la sociedad, irrumpieron en la acción de los arquitectos trastornando la práctica profesional, las bases proyectuales y las obras, e indujeron una nueva manera de concebir el proyecto. Este estudio analiza el modo cómo las revistas de arquitectura dieron cuenta de este proceso en el lapso de las publicadas entre 1913 y 1941. Se plantea la cuestión del origen histórico de la modernidad arquitectónica local, estableciendo la correspondencia entre los acontecimientos culturales que afectaron a todo el país y el proceso de transformación de la arquitectura durante el siglo XX. A través de las revistas los arquitectos se hicieron cargo del impacto que tuvo en la arquitectura la modernización cultural, y pusieron en marcha tres estrategias para enfrentarlo: creación del Colegio de Arquitectos, formación de Facultades de Arquitectura e integración social de la profesión a través de la participación en congresos de la especialidad y la promoción de la reglamentación de la práctica de la arquitectura.

There are over 500 illustrations, including 130 original photographs and 230 original axonometric drawings, arranged to explain the technical, aesthetic, and historical aspects of the building form. Most of the modern movements in architecture have identified some paradigm of good construction, arguing that buildings should be built like Gothic cathedrals, like airplanes, like automobiles, like ships, or like primitive dwellings. Ford examines the degree to which these models were followed, either in spirit or in form, and reveals much about both the theories and techniques of modern architecture, including the extent to which the current constructional theories of High Tech and Deconstruction are dependent on the traditional modernist paradigms, as well as the ways in which all of these theories differ from the realities of modern building. MAA At Work: Projects Meier and Associes Architectes A comprehensive, eye-opening first monograph on FrenchSwiss architect Philippe Meier and his firm MAA, covering 90 projects (almost all built) since 1988.
