November 2013 E-Newsletter

From the Desk of ... Tricia McAleer, Executive Director Instead of writing a letter this month, I wanted to pass on a wonderful letter I received today. Enjoy! Thanks, Trish Dear Friends, I am writing to you from my new home where I've nestled in with a lovely couple from Lincoln Park. I just got adopted this past Saturday and someone had even paid my adoption fee in advance because they love me so much. I almost blushed but I maintained my usual calm demeanor. I'm going to miss chewing up all those toys that nice people donated for me (sorry guys but I really did enjoy them)! And the run... I loved hanging out in that run. Oh, oh! I can't forget about my play dates and my best girl Eden. I just wanted to say thank you to all my friends at RBARI. It feels like just yesterday you saved my life, gave me medicine, patched me up and made me part of the family. And more than anything, I'm going to miss all of you so so much! All my love, Wallace

ANIMAL SPOTLIGHT LOGAN IS LOOKING FOR A HOME Logan and Slugger are adorable five year old Yorkie/Pomeranian brothers from the same litter. They had been living in the basement of their previous family's home for years until the family decided that they really could find a better life elsewhere. Thankfully they surrendered them to RBARI just in time! When they arrived, we noticed that Logan was in tremendous pain. He was extremely lethargic and and urinating blood. We had to rush him right to one of our partnering veterinary hospitals to have him checked out and sure enough, found that he had been suffering with several bladder stones! This poor, teeny little boy had to be in excruciating pain and for the amount of stones he had, it had to be going on for quite some time! Needless to say, he underwent surgery to have the stones removed and is in much happier shape now. He will remain on a special diet and we encourage his water intake, but we expect him to live a much happier and healthier long life now that he's gotten the proper care. And Slugger, happy as can be (you may have seen him at our Whiskers & Tails Ball), was recently adopted and is now in his forever home. Logan is an adorable, pint size dog that loves the attention he has been getting from our staff and volunteers. He is going to make a great companion dog for a lucky family who is wanting a friendly and interactive little sidekick. Logan seems to enjoy the human attention that he has been getting so much so he may enjoy a home where he will be the sole focus.

HAVE OODLES OF FUN WITH NOODLE!

The word is out that Noodles is sweet, playful and silly. He is a young brown tiger tabby with white on his belly and paws and an “I’d like to play” look on his face. When he isn’t coming to greet you for a head scratch or to sit in your lap, he is playing chase with his favorite mouse or ball. As I was observing his antics and watching this adorable cat in action, I was amused as he entertained onlookers by jumping down from the This year we were proud to high spots in the kitty condos, stuffing a mouse in his mouth, dropping have had a very special guest attend our event, retired the mouse and then batting it around the floor. MEET THE STAFF: STEW CUTLER Stew Cutler might have one of the most difficult positions at the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge. It takes a special person to get others to work for free! At an early age, Stew's father Stella and Karma brought home a puppy from the Animal Rescue League in Boston, raising Stew's awareness of the need to adopt from shelters. Being TRICKY TRAY MAKES A BUNDLE! associated with RBARI has strengthened that ethic and given him the opportunity to provide hands-on help when he became a Our 15th Annual Tricky Tray was held on volunteer two and a half years ago. It takes a ton of work, but we are lucky to have such a Stew's lasting impressions from RBARI: " I've encountered a few dogs that all made lasting impressions. Wallace, always up for a good time and, finally adopted; Walrus, a big lug of a Rottie mix from Georgia, and last but not least Harry, a Golden Retriever who I adopted before losing him to a kidney disorder. All of these wonderful boys were nurtured and cared for by a staff that is second to none. They are some of the most knowledgeable and dedicated people I've ever met and it’s a privilege to be part of their team." Lisa Esak, Adoption Manager at RBARI, has this to say about Stew: "Stew is quite the character! He has a great rapport with many of the volunteers and one of the biggest soft spots I've seen for any Labrador Retriever that walks through the door. And of course all of our Labs LOVE Stew! If there is a Lab in the kennel, it is undoubtedly Stew's new best friend."
