Examples of the range of capabilities and turnkey experience of Express Global Logistics are showcased here, beginning with the completion of one of the largest hydroelectric projects undertaken by their client in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The client is a leading EPC company, based in India, with a particular interest in Africa. The cargo comprised of 3,500frt of material handling equipment and the project site was located in a very remote area of the landlocked country. This was not easily accessible by road, rail or river. Nailesh: “We initially transported the shipment from Mumbai to Dar-es-Salam, in Tanzania, to then make the journey to Lubumbashi. The project faced several challenges with regards to the execution of timely and proper shipping documents, custom clearance with the least amount of demurrage at the discharge port, organising transport for the entire lot (around 80 vehicles) including ODC’s and escorts. The movement passed through three international borders (Tanzania, Zambia and the DRC). Next, Express Global Logistics have recently completed a power project involving the loading of 8,094frt of cargo, moved from Yantai (China), to Mongla (Bangladesh). Nailesh states: “We chartered an entire vessel, to move this shipment, which was marked as extremely urgent. Given the time constraints, we managed to convince the carrier to skip the next port of call, after Yantai, and divert the vessel directly to Mongla, within a shorter transit time of 18 days. For the smooth loading operation of these units, team members from Express Global Logistics visited Yantai, to ensure the completion of the shipment. The challenge was to arrange the vessel, to our conditions, at Yantai port and also to arrange a 18-axel hydraulic truck, to bring the modules alongside the vessel. Due to the efforts of our company, the project was completed on time.” Another successful project, successfully completed for an oil & gas customer, included ship chartering, safe & timely loading, surveying and the ocean transportation of cable reel weighing 130mt. Dhabi, from Newcastle, in the UK. The cargo was transported on M.V. Abis Dusavik, which stows 541cbm on the lower hold & under deck. Nailesh Gandhi explains: “We moved a shipment of 2 similar reels last year, also to Abu Dhabi, thus we knew what was required, with the movement being time critical. With the urgency of the shipment, our entire team closely monitored the delivery arrangements of the shipper, and port handling agency, to ensure the smooth completion of the loading, as per our preplanning. The challenges were to arrange a suitable vessel, in Newcastle, and to berth the vessel, to load the cargo during the available window slot provided, by terminal. However due to excellent loading, stowing, fastening and extensive planning, the operation was completed in good time.” An on-going project for Express Global Logistics involves the import handling of casings & tubes, for an oil & gas client. They have been successfully handling these operations for over 5 years, with shipment

quantities varying from 1,000 - 5,000mt, per shipment, with around 15,000mt+ on a yearly basis. The pipes and casings are designed to carry oil & gas, and require special handling. Air Transport: Logistics Transport has very competitive and fair contracts, with various airlines who service Costa Rica.”

www.mi-logistic.com journey began in the Tri-City, in Poland, and finished in the centre of Malmö, Sweden. The cargo was first delivered to Swinoujscie (a seaport in north-west Poland), where the footbridge was successfully carried by ferry to Trelleborg, in Sweden, then onto the site, to be installed. A total of nearly 700km. Patryk Szymanski was the logistics operator responsible for the entire transport of the footbridge. He explains: “It is not a common occurrence that a shipment, is transported via public roads and the level of difficulty was raised as there was almost 500km to cover in Poland alone. A lot of effort was taken to meet our goal: the extensive preparations involved, detailed planning of the whole process, the preparation of equipment, very precise manoeuvres throughout the route, and the partial dismantling of road infrastructure. The ferry crossing was an additional difficulty, placing such a giant piece, in the ferry loading area, required special preparations, including detailed measurements of both the vessel and the two terminals. The obstacles encountered on the route included: Toll gates at the A1 motorway, which were partially dismantled to allow easy passage of the cargo;  Roundabouts, requiring very precise manoeuvres on the opposite side of the road, against the traffic flow, with temporary road closures;  A slow and careful passage underneath a railway bridge, in Jastrowie, as there were just a few centimetres of space separating the load from the top of the bridge structure; Tight junctions, in smaller towns, where the passage required the trailer axles to be remotely controlled;  In the Swinoujscie port area, the harbour structures & cargo supports created many obstacles and, in most situations, the margin of space was just a hair’s breadth;  The ferry exit ramp, in Trelleborg, meant the cargo needed to leave the ferry at a 90° angle, to the left, and with a load of such length, this required meticulous precision, from both the driver and the pilot crew;  Whilst passing through the suburbs of Malmö to reach the site, at the very centre of the city, the route involved many roundabouts and intersections, which were also traversed at 90°;  To position the transport unit for unloading, it was necessary to drive into the middle of an intersection and reverse at a 90° angle onto the site.”

Mr. Ropinus Tambunan: “The cargo terms for this shipment was DDP door-to-door and we handled all the costing and local jobs in Indonesia, including full payment of duties and taxes.”

Managing Director at MI Logistic, Mr. Ropinus Tambunan states: “For this exwork, we handled the stuffing of the heavy lift cargo to the low-bed truck, the lashing, the inland transportation from the shipper’s factory, arranging Schneider to the Tanjung Priok port, in Jakarta, and booking the shipping line. We used Hanjin Shipping, departing on September 15th and arriving in Chittagong on September 27th. We would like to offer our thanks to Marmedsa Proyectos for their kind cooperation and trust in MI Logistics, to handle this shipment safely and smoothly.”  Some of the photos, above, show the transformers on a low-bed truck, on its way to the port. PRIME

CARGO

(NORWAY )

HANDLE HUGE VOLUME PCN representative in Norway, since November 2012, Prime Cargo have recently handled a charter of oil & gas equipment from Norway to Korea. In total, the cargo amounted to 271,754kgs and 1,723.579cbm. Kim Eckerman of the Projects Department at Prime Cargo states: “The operation consisted of pre-carriage by trucks & barge, loading, lashing, the securing & welding of the cargo and survey reports, as well as the actual seafreight to the final destination. The most difficult issue was the pre-carriage to the quay of 2 ‘Hydrarackers’, each weighing 50,000kgs, with dimensions of 44 x 2.05 x 2.60m and 2 ‘Vertical Pipe Rackers’, each

weighing 40,320kgs, with dimensions of 44.30 x 2.70 x 2.45m. Among the various other pieces was also 1 ‘Upper Track’, weighing 29,647kgs, with dimensions of 21.50 x 4 x 4.65m, which was too big for the road tunnel and had to be transported by barge. The discharging, loading & complete operational procedure ran perfectly within the time frame, of around 30 hours. We are proud of this achievement, and all the good people in the Prime Cargo team, ensuring the satisfaction of our customer. Please contact us with any enquiries - we are now looking ahead to new and challenging tasks!”

The Optara B project is one of the biggest transportation operations ever undertaken on the Antwerp roads and will run to around 180 days in total. Heavy lift units weighing up-to 1,000mtns are being trucked, via the Scheldelaan road, to TOTAL’s final site. Overall, 34 modules will eventually be moved from Spain and the first vessel carried 9 modules. The first module, to be discharged, made its road transportation in Antwerp by night. Some photographs of the operations, including the arrival at the TOTAL site, are shown.

INTERFRACHT

COMPLETE MASSIVE PROJECT TRANSPORT One of the founding PCN members, Interfracht Air Sea Land Service, are representatives in Germany and Japan. They have recently handled four reactors, each weighing 800tns, transported from Japan to Belarus. This massive project included a three-year planning period, with the Interfracht Hamburg and Tokyo offices working closely together. The reactors travelled across a distance of 17,500km from Japan then, via the Black Sea, by a river voyage, on the Dnieper River, in Ukraine, all the way through to Mozyr in Belarus. Tobias Karrasch (Managing Director at Interfracht Hamburg) and Kazuhiro Furukawa (General Manager at Interfracht Japan) explain: “Four special barges, a 10km heavy duty road and the unloading pier were designed and built exclusively for this movement. The huge reactors measured 50 x 7.2 x 5.5m”. “The cargo was loaded at Higashi Harima, in Japan, and transported to Kherson, in Ukraine, by MV Trina of SAL Line. There, the shipment was loaded onto special barges, specially constructed by Marine Digital. The pontoons were towed along the Dnieper River, from Kherson to the landing stage. Due to the unstable political situation in Ukraine, this particular segment of the haulage was extremely challenging and the exact location of the goods was constantly inspected and monitored using the most advanced technology. Also, to make the shipment an even bigger achievement, heavy storms in Eastern Europe resulted in flooding at the destination site. Therefore a protective dam was especially built around the landing stage and the final road haulage was then carried out using a 64-axle SPMT, having to overcome inclines of up to 12%”. Tobias and Kazuhiro would like to thank everyone involved for their outstanding cooperation and commitment, after this successful delivery. www.interfracht.de

RYANO LOGISTICS

BRING ENERGY TO REMOTE LOCATION Ryano Logistics are PCN representatives in Peru, located in Lima. The company are experts in finding solutions to the most difficult project cargo and heavy lift challenges. A recent operation, successfully completed, involved 3 power generators, a transformer and a fuel tank, transported from the Netherlands, to a remote part of the Andes, in Peru.

forklifts or cranes can be used, as the ground is unstable and cannot handle the weight of the machinery. Our experts at Ryano Logistics carefully evaluated the scenario, risks and opportunities, before the cargo arrived in Peru, and therefore all our solutions were in place and the 2nd stage of the operation was put into action as soon as the cargo was unloaded.

The primary PCN contact at Ryano, Jhoanna Benitez states: “The last month has been another busy one at our company and we have again proven that our developed techniques and processes ensure that our zero-incident mind-set is fully achieved, in every single operation we perform. An important part of our industry lies in what to do when standard technology is not the solution, when nature complicates the operation, with heavy and constant rain etc., and when the destination is in a place that trucks cannot access. In these cases, creative solutions must be sought and definitive action needs to be taken. This truly defines the meaning of logistics. At Ryano Logistics, our inventive approach means we see these obstacles as learning experiences, that makes our mission more interesting.

A jacking system was utilised and, in less than a week, the three power generators, transformer and fuel tank were safely assembled and running at the secluded location. The installation was originally supposed to be temporary (3 months) but has now been extended to 2 years. Along with our client, we are very proud to deliver progress to this region.

The cargo, for this particular operation, allowed our client to bring light, development and energy to houses in the Peruvian jungle that didn’t have it before. The first part of the operation ran smoothly and the cargo arrived safely in Peru from the Netherlands. However, the real adventure started when the cargo needed to be delivered to the Sivia district, in a location where no

Facing similar challenges all year round has triggered our experts to expect the unexpected and has further driven our desire to offer innovate & superior long-term solutions, customer-oriented processes and to never lose sight of the facts. Ryano Logistics’ adventurous spirit is explored every day and enjoyed to the fullest in every operation.” www.ryanologistics.com

Mr. Rama Chandra, CEO at Conxion, explained: “We arranged the complete required route survey and the traffic department escorts, as well as the actual movement of the cargo, to the project site. We utilised a 300tn crane to load the shipment onto the trailers.  Conxion Logistics is one of the listed suppliers of the Qatar Rail Doha Metro projects. TOPLINE

SHOW HOW PACKAGING CAN SAVE COSTS

Topline were asked by PCN members in Ecuador, Schryver, to ship 2 wooden cases of machinery, from Shanghai to Guayaquil, in one 40’ flat-rack. Martin Zhao (President) states: “The shipment terms were FOB and the ocean freight was to be paid by the consignee. We checked the dimensions of the cargo and found we could save substantial costs, if the wooden cases could be stacked. Therefore, we informed Schryver of our proposal, to reinforce the cases, to make them stable for stacking. As the new cost was much less, Schryver del Ecuador put their trust in our planning and our packaging people did a great job. The shipment was shipped stacked in a 20’ flatrack and around US$6,000, in ocean freight, was saved for the consignee.” Topline have a German customer, based in Shanghai, who manufacture tyre production machines for customers, such as Michelin and Continental Tyres. Martin Zhao explains: “They used to ask two different companies to handle their packaging and logistics separately. The packaging company’s only concern was the safety of goods - they didn’t pay much attention to the dimensions of the packages. So each time the machinery was exported, the logistics company had to use 12 x 40’HQ’s, to load all the different sized parts. When we were invited, by the customer, to offer packaging and logistics solutions, we re-designed the packaging processes to ensure a more economical fit of the cargo into the containers. Now, we ship the same amount as before, using only 10 x 40’HQ’s. We saved our customer not only the ocean freight cost, but also the total logistics charges from the shipper’s door to the consignee’s door, including trucking & port charges, THC etc.” Some of the photos show the packaging and container loading of the tyre production machinery. www.tel-group.com

AAI + Peers Inc. have been a PCN member representing the Philippines since July 2012. They are focused on heavy lift & project cargo handling, transportation and delivery. It has been a busy time for the company.... www.aai.com.ph

RECENT NEWS FROM AAI + PEERS AAI + Peers have successfully passed the ISO 2001:9008 process and have been awarded their certification. Elias B. Maravilla Jr. (Sales Manager) explains: “We are proud of this achievement, being one of the only project cargo moving, companies in the Philippines, to become ISO 9001:2008 certified. The certification was awarded by TUV Rheinland Philippines Inc., for ‘Provisions of Rigging-Hauling/Industrial Crating’”. AAI + Peers have also been issued a Certificate of Compliance, on General Labour Standards and Occupational Safety & Health Standards, by the Department of Labour & Employment (DOLE). The certification means AAI are compliant with the highest safety and labour standards. “We felt it necessary to earn these

credentials, to further enable our servicing of the growing demand for project cargo moving, with the robust Philippine industrial, commercial and infrastructural markets”. In 2006, Peers Cargo Movers Inc. joined the prestigious Airlift Asia Inc. Group of Companies (AAI-GOC), becoming one of its affiliate companies (AAI + Peers). Elias B. Maravilla Jr.: “The union has evolved into an integral logistics company, offering the special handling of project cargo and machinery. Carving a name, initially in the electronics and manufacturing industries, we have been extending our rigging-hauling and industrial crating services to more varied markets, such as construction, power-generation, mining,

medical equipment, cooling systems, and entire plant transfers. A new expertise, we now provide, is the heavy-lift of special machinery such as transformers (weighing over 80mts) using skid rails, hydraulic jacks, steel chokes, and hydraulic cylinders. Moving the heavy machine manually without the use of a crane. This is a practical alternative for moving heavy equipment in remote areas of the Philippines, where the availability of heavy moving equipment is scarce. This ‘skidding heavy-lift method’ is also a much more economical service. We shall be more than glad to attend to any project cargo moving, and total logistics needs, coming to and from the Philippines”.

PCN members in Germany, Russia and Mongolia - Alexander Global Logistics (AGL), report another significant project movement. The company moved 10,000frt of cargo, from Antwerp to St. Petersburg, and from there onto the Russian inland port of Dzerzhinsk. Director of Projects at AGL, Jürgen Weyhausen: “The cargo (consisting of coldboxes, adsorbers, molesieve-units etc.) is destined for an air separation plant being installed in Dzerzhinsk. AGL Germany worked in close conjunction with AGL Russia to organise: all pre-carriages, the surveys in Antwerp, St. Petersburg and Dzerzhinsk, roadstudies, all handlings, a full-charter for both seafreight and Russian inland water vessels (which had to comply with a maximum draught of 2m due to waterlevel constraints on the Russian river system), customs operations and delivery by special trucks with turntables at the job-site in Russia. The individual pieces went up to 100tns with the largest dimensions 42 x 5.06 x 3.60m. Once again, AGL has proven to be one the first-class logistics providers in Russia, due to our extensive experience, in the region, for decades.”

CEA Project Logistics are over 15 years old and are experts in project cargo and heavy lift. They are active PCN members in Thailand & Myanmar and they show the same activism in their local communities, as demonstrated by this worthwhile project, located in Kanchanaburi Province (Thailand), which they have recently taken part in. The project was to restore a C-123 Fairchild ‘Provider’ transport aircraft, that served in the Vietnam War. The aircraft is kept at the ‘Royal Thai Army Vietnam Veterans Museum’, in Kanchanaburi, and CEA were joined by a number of local businesses and ex-pats to help complete the task in just 4 days. Earl Brown (Marketing & Communications Manager) explains: “CEA sent a team on the Friday morning, along with a Hiab truck and a generator, to help aid the project, which actually became instrumental in the success of the operation. The number of willing hands soon grew, with members of the DSL and Defence International Security Services pitching in alongside even more CEA staff, arriving on the Saturday. Mick Newbatt, of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, was the foreman for the weekend and had only to give minimal guidance to the teams who, with brush in hand, set about painting the old bird!

HANDLE TRANSHIPMENT OF 200TN CRANE TO JOHOR StederDelta Group are PCN representatives in Romania, located in Bucharest and Constanta. The company have recently completed the transportation of a dismantled crane, weighing 200tns in 16 pieces, with the heaviest at 120tns. Dimitris Charisoglou (Agency & Port Handling Manager at StederDelta’s Constanta Office) explains: “To carry out the project, we used a 2 vessel combination and a direct ship-to-ship transhipment. The cargo was loaded at Turkmenbashi Port in Turkmenistan and transhipped at Constanta from ‘M/V Whitebox Volga’ directly onto ‘M/V Panthea’, which travelled to the final destination discharging port of Johor in Malaysia. The operations were performed by the ship’s heavy lift cranes, with one vessel berthed alongside the other. StederDelta took care of the chartering of both the vessels, the ship-toship transhipment, the agency of the vessels and the full handling & manipulation of the cargo at all ports. Despite the practical difficulty of both the cargo and the nature of operation, all stages were excellently performed, both in time & effectively, and our customer was very pleased with our professional service”. www.stederdelta-group.com

CEA RACING TEAM

WIN DRAMATIC COMPETITION

www.ceaprojects.com

CEA Project Logistics (PCN member representing Thailand & Myanmar, specialising in industrial project cargo) sponsor their own racing team: CEA Racing. The team (pictured here) enjoyed a dramatic and fairy-tale ending to their last competition/race. The CEA Racing Team came from last position on the grid, to excitingly win first place in the 1,500cc class at the True Visions Bobby Hunter Super One race, taking place at the Chang International Circuit in Thailand. The CEA driver, Thomas Raldorf, from Denmark, started racing at just 10 years old and is a former Thailand and Denmark go-karting champion. He succeeded in overcoming adversity and misfortune to snatch the important victory.

20

A broken gear box during the qualifying stage meant they were forced to forfeit their slot and started the first race at the back of the grid, in 25th place.

This total put Thomas starting in pole position on the grid for the final race.

With a mix of incredibly skilful driving and sheer determination, from Thomas, CEA Racing powered through the 6-lap race. At the end of the first lap, Thomas had moved an amazing 13 places and by the end of third lap, he was in 3rd place.

From the very beginning, Thomas remained safely in 1st place for the entire final race, with none of the other drivers threatening the win at any point. From starting in the worst place in round one, CEA took the final victory.

However, CEA Racing were unable to reach the 1st and 2nd placed cars in the remaining 2 laps and finished the first race in 3rd place. An excellent achievement made all the better when it was announced that Thomas had secured the fastest lap of the day, meaning extra bonus points were added to the CEA Team tally.

The CEA Racing team were delighted with the win and stated it was made all the sweeter due to the difficulties faced and gaining pole position for the final race, due to the fastest lap - drama with a fairy tale ending! As he crossed the finish line, Thomas held his hand out of the window in celebration.

AND IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH...

www.ceaprojects.com

THE CEA RACING TEAM WIN THE 2014 PRO RACING TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP Coming soon after their Fairytale win (see previous story), CEA can now report that their racing team, CEA Racing, have now won the 2014 Pro Racing Team Championship in style at the Chang International Circuit, Buriram, Thailand. Earl Brown (Marketing & Communications Manager) describes the action: “The CEA driver, Thomas Raldorf from Denmark, drove in the #29 car and started the first race in 2nd place on the grid. As the lights went, he stormed into the first corner and by the second, had already built up a significant lead. From then on it was a fairly straightforward race, as the chasing pack could do nothing to stop Thomas’s charge to the finish line. As Thomas achieved the fastest lap of 2:06.1, in race one, he was in pole position for race two. However, the race didn’t pan out as smoothly as the first. Once again, he made a blistering start but some wayward driving from the following pack caused him to run wide twice, allowing other drivers to get in front. As the laps counted down, Thomas battled his way back into contention and crossed the line in 4th place. This disappointment was soon washed away, though, as the news that CEA Racing had won the Team Championship filled the paddock. As well as this, Thomas had also consolidated  2nd place in the Drivers’ Championship, which, added to the S1R Championship that CEA won earlier in the year, cap a great season for the team! Our thoughts now turn to planning and preparation for 2015”.

RAISES $14755 FOR THE DREAM TRUST

Paolo Federici, the Managing Director of the company, has been awarded ‘The Logistics of the Year’ by the Italian Logistics Association ‘AssoLogistica’ (www.assologistica.it). The commendation (one of only 5 awarded) was received for innovative efforts in the field of project cargo and in providing a valuable contribution to logistics culture in Italy. The ceremony took place at the ‘Press Club’ in Milan. Paolo states: “I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to the commission who decided I was worthy of the honour. I would also like to thank all the visitors to my blog (dedicated to logistics & transport) for reading, commenting and sharing the varied articles as this has allowed me to delve deeper into logistics culture”. The majority of PCN Members recognise the importance of supporting and actively contributing to those who are less fortunate. We are aware that a small effort from each Member can make a big impact to those in need. The PCN Foundation provides the opportunity for Members to be able to make a difference to people’s lives through annual fundraising. In 2012 we decided to source a charity and support it for 3 years, so that we had time to establish good relations and to make a real difference. The chosen charity was The Dream Trust in India, who fund life-saving insulin for poor children with Type 1 Diabetes. The charity is close to my heart as my youngest son, George, was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 9 years old.

My sister, Mary, and I made a self-funded trip to Nagpur to visit the Dream Trust and witness their inspiring work. The PCN Head Office currently sponsors 11 children and we had the great privilege of meeting them all during our trip (see photos). Since 2012, PCN Members together raised $9,840. We are now adding $4,915 to that total from our recent fundraising including a generous €1,000 donation from Alexander Global Logistics GmbH in Germany – this brings the total to a fantastic $14,755. The funds have been used to provide insulin, syringes, blood test strips and health care for the children. We have also funded educational scholarships, travel grants and rehabilitation programs to help the children to become self-reliant. I am sure that you will agree that this is a great achievement that we have made together. The PCN Head Office will continue with the 11 childrens’ sponsorship indefinitely and next year PCN will have a new charity to support, with details to be provided in due course. RACHEL HUMPHREY President/C.E.O.
