distinguished educator Vicki Hermsdorf Klein High School

Simply put, Mrs. Hermsdorf is brilliant. On a daily basis, she takes chemistry, such an intimidating topic and decrypts it until every last student understands. But it’s more than just knowledge that defines her as a teacher. It’s her contagious enthusiasm, her ability to get a roomful of high schoolers excited about thermodynamic equilibrium. Even on the sleepiest Wednesday afternoons, I walk into her classroom, amazed at her pure energy. I doubt there’s anyone that can sit in on her class for ten minutes and not notice the scratching of pencils in notebooks, the whirring of brains firing at full horsepower and the sudden internal yearning to finish that Redox equation. Mrs. Hermsdorf has been more than just my chemistry teacher and my competitive science coach - she’s been an inspirational and motivational factor for each and every student who steps into her classroom.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Mallery for the past four years through both math club and math classes. Since the beginning, she has been the epitome of dedication and passion both in the classroom and out, characteristics of a teacher who truly cares for her students. She stays after school almost every day for the math team, travels with us for frequent weekend competitions, invests an unimaginable number of hours at home for her students and still manages it all with an unwavering enthusiasm. But what I love most about Mrs. Mallery is the way she approaches teaching - by showing us how those formulas and theorems can be used to solve real life situations. Math class is about the volume of her scrumptious chocolate cake, the graph of a sexy curve, Louisiana whooping cranes, grandbabies and Golden Retrievers. And she has been one of the few teachers to impress in her students how hard work and living with “a fire in your belly” are keys to any successful future. Unquestionably, Mrs. Mallery has helped me both discover a more profound love for math, as well as understand what it means to live life to the fullest. Thank you, Mrs. Mallery.

distinguished educator Kathy Shipper Doerre Intermediate School, Retired

On the surface, it was our simple classroom tradition, but it was a truth about Mrs. Shipper. On the surface of her desk, Mrs. Shipper kept a calendar of our birthdays and had a teddy bear sing to us, but deep down it was much more. The truth was that she knew everything true about us - every one of us. I was her vanilla A-B student (truly vanilla), but she not only knew my birthday, but she also understood how vocabulary books were. She understood what Mathcounts was. She understood when I was weak. It seemed like just yesterday, I was down for whatever reason and Mrs. Shipper gave me a pat on my back and gave me her smile - a rough fuzzy warm growl of a smile, rough enough to inspire strength, but so warm! In her class, everyone was someone. I wouldn’t be the mathematics student I am today without this English teacher. There are only nine of us here tonight from that little, sixth grade English class. She taught only two of the valedictorians here. But Mrs. Shipper does really inspire.

Mr. Adams, Physics teacher, Academic Challenge and Klein Islamic Thought sponsor, and one of my Academic Decathlon coaches, is great for a multitude of reasons. 1. He does magic tricks. He can eat fire (for academic purposes), read minds, and successfully teach a roomful of apathetic teens. 2. He’s innovative. His test reviews consist of knocking down cups with Angry Birds, competing for survival in a zombie apocalypse, impersonating famous deceased artists, and many more odd but effective retention methods. 3. He has an awesome beard. 4. He loves his students. When we laugh, he laughs with us. When we cry, he pokes us with brooms. When we need him, he is always there, ready to listen and offer his support, even when it’s 5:30 in the evening and he really wants to go home and make lasagna. From him, I have learned to believe in myself, to trust in my abilities, to enjoy life and love people, to make an impact and leave a legacy. Mr. Adams, thank you. Thank you for being so great.

distinguished educator Amy Breeding Klein High School

Many teachers look for students that go “above and beyond,” star pupils who are truly dedicated to their education and are willing to produce the effort necessary to excel. Students like these are decidedly rare, as stated by teachers and fellow students alike. In my mind, however, outstanding teachers are even rarer than their student counterparts; they are brilliant educators marked by a genuine enthusiasm for their subject, guides who craft their instruction with personal style and flair. Ms. Breeding is one of these exceptional educators, an incredible asset to Klein High School and the Klein Independent School District as a whole. Exercising wit and a matching sense of humor, Ms. Breeding shelters a comfortable, student-driven learning environment through her daily classroom interactions, encouraging free exploration of literary interpretations and insights. My experiences and maturations resulting from my time in this enlightening atmosphere, among which is a broadened world awareness, have simply been tremendous. Highly appreciative, I wish to humbly honor Ms. Breeding for her industry and impact on my life.

As a complete and total band geek, it’s no surprise that my band directors have had a significant impact on my character over the past four years. One director in particular, Mr. Chris Lambrecht, has played an especially prominent role in inspiring me to grow not only as a musician, but as a person as well. Through my four years under his direction, he has shown me the value of hard work, perseverance, and passion - just a few of his own characteristics that have set an incredible example for all of the Bearkat Band. No matter the situation, Mr. Lambrecht encourages me to put my entire heart into whatever task I’m trying to accomplish. He constantly reminds me that success is nothing more than personal satisfaction from growing in the thing you love. Mr. Lambrecht has also changed the way in which I view leadership by showing me that it isn’t about gaining recognition or popularity, but rather about inspiring those around you to grow alongside you. Mr. Lambrecht has impacted my life in more ways than I can put into words, and for that I am forever grateful.

distinguished educator Donna Browning Klein High School

Perhaps one of the reasons Mrs. Browning and I get along so well is because she’s never had to grade any of my papers. I’ve never had her for a real class, but because of Decathlon, I’ve spent more time with her than with any of my other teachers this year. What I will remember most about this year are the friendships I have made, largely because of the role Mrs. Browning played in facilitating those friendships through Decathlon. School should be about more than grades; that was one of the first things we agreed upon. We’ve had a lot of heart-to-heart conversations since and I’ve truly grown in a way that can’t happen when I’m more concerned about my GPA than whether I’m actually learning. But with Mrs. Browning, whether the immediate goal was to practice my impromptu or touch up my art knowledge, the true mission has always been to improve myself. I cannot thank her enough for encouraging me and giving me a sounding board for philosophical ideas including the most important: Chess. IS. A sport.

When I first walked into Sr. Nelson’s classroom as a callow sophomore, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Bookwork, probably and a barrage of worksheets. That seemed like a pretty standard formula for foreign language teachers. Instead, I read and discussed articles from BBC Mundo, wrote and performed skits based on specific vocabulary and conducted interviews with native speakers. A man of many talents, Sr. Nelson brought his guitar to class and played Spanish songs while explaining their lyrics and cultural significance. He regaled us with stories of his visits to Spain and Mexico - all told in Spanish - and encouraged us to embrace the beauty of the language and culture ourselves. After three years of Sr. Nelson’s class, I can read a Spanish poem (without visiting Google Translate), discuss its metaphors and theme, then write one of my own. Finally understanding a foreign language is indescribable. It broadens your perspective and opens doors to wonderful works of art you never imagined existed. For giving me such a gift, I can say only one thing to Sr. Nelson: Gracias por todo.

distinguished educator Evelyn Colón Klein High School

Señora Colón has a quinceañera every year. Every. Single. Year. Well, it’s not surprising really since she’s perpetually fifteen forever young and fit. Maybe that’s why her students can relate to her. She’s smart, personable and quirky. Maybe it’s her diet of crayons - the black one is her favorite, mind you - that makes her a teacher full of energy and passion. There wasn’t a single day when I did not enjoy her Spanish class. Whether it was her constant reminder that she would poke our eyes out (with her precious paper “eye-poker”) if we weren’t focused on our work or her caring proclamations that she always believed in us, I always had a ton of fun learning about Spanish language and culture. She has not only just instilled in me a love for Spanish but also for life and for learning. Simply put, she’s more than just a teacher. She motivates us. She inspires us. She wishes the best for us. And she “friends” us on Facebook, so we can always stay connected. ¡Señora Colón, gracias por hacerme una mejor persona!

I came into high school with a dislike of biology. The memorization of countless terms and organism classifications made me question the usefulness of the subject. Mrs. Glocksien turned those negative sentiments around within the first week. As the state mandated biology curriculum was being more and more constricted, Mrs. Glocksien repeatedly stepped out of the required learning system by bringing exciting presentations to make any day special. For example, Mrs. Glocksien would regularly bring in pond water samples for us to view under a microscope. In our spare time, we could view an entire ecosystem thrive in just a drop of water. Her funny anecdotes and mnemonics helped me remember and understand many biology topics and they are still fresh in my mind. Her enthusiasm for the subject was infectious and I was drawn in from day one. Mrs. Glocksien is the epitome of what a teacher should be. She would create interest where there was perceived to be none, and wouldn’t hesitate to go beyond what was required in order to take our learning experience to the next level.

I honestly have not met anyone as charming or inspirational as Mrs. McCharen. She genuinely takes care of her students and does whatever it takes for them to succeed. Her friendly demeanor and laid-back nature definitely helps in putting a smile on anyone’s face. I admire her energy, willingness and patience very much. Despite having multiple tasks to complete at one time, Mrs. McCharen does an outstanding job in carrying out her responsibilities. She has taught me to keep my head up high even when things don’t go as planned. I have learned from her that life will have its bumps on the road, but it is important to not let those challenges get the best of you. It takes a very special person to take their time and give assistance on how to plan for the future. I enjoy having discussions with Mrs. McCharen about our families, cultures, holidays, etc. It is a pleasure to work with you. I really appreciate everything you have done.

Computer Science was a unique class that was taught by a unique teacher. For me, the classroom always generated an indescribable aura that always made me feel at home. I was not sure if it was the group of people around me or all the computers available that created that sort of environment. It was likely a combination of both. A definite contributor to the atmosphere was one man. Overlooking the entire classroom with his tyrannical program that allowed him to track our every move on any of the computers, Mr. Mundo embodied the true meaning of a teacher every single day he was there. He was friendly (even though his face sometimes suggested otherwise), one of the most hilarious teachers I’ve met (in more ways than one), always open to discussion, conscious of his students’ learning and thoughts and always challenged our capabilities. However, the biggest impact he has made in my learning experience is the fact that he introduced the world of programming to me. From studying computer science, I have learned the true idea of problem solving (something I truly value as a person of mathematical and scientific reasoning) and a unique way of approaching conflicts. Essentially, it was like learning a new language and studying the culture behind it. It was certainly tough but incredibly interesting. And, just like knowing another language, I am sure that the art of programming will be a useful skill for years to come. I thank Mr. Mundo immensely for his years of teaching, which were certainly not half-hearted.

“Good luck, and may God have mercy on your soul!” Anyone who has ever taken his class knows that it is almost impossible to start a physics test without hearing these words of encouragement come from Dr. LaFave. Recalling memories such as the infamous circular motion lesson or his constant referral to himself as the “swagmaster” will never cease to put a smile on my face. It is hard to come across a teacher who truly cares about the future success of his students. From letters of recommendation to insight on college majors and career paths, Dr. LaFave has been there every step of the way. He is a wellqualified man having worked for NASA, the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy, yet he chose to come teach high school students which in and of itself is truly an inspiration. Dr. LaFave has not only sparked my interest in physics and engineering, but has given me a clearer picture of what I desire for my future, and for that, I am extremely grateful.

When I first met Mr. Ridenour, he told me I was going to play percussion in high school during marching season. I was honestly shocked, because I had always played the oboe. From then on, he has made band the best experience of my life. The only reason why I’m still in it is because of him. His devotion to music has inspired me to work hard at what I love to do and to enjoy it as well. He has lectured us multiple times, teaching us new life lessons and to make sure we learn from our mistakes. I have learned that you should never be discouraged, to try even harder even if it’s perfect, to push yourself to the limit, to take responsibility, to be on time to everything and much more. There is a whole list of what I’ve learned. I could say he’s like my second father to me. I’d like to say thank you for everything you have done for me. Sean O’Casey once said, “The whole world’s a stage, and most of us are desperately unrehearsed.” The teacher who I have brought with me today has taught me not only to be the most rehearsed I can be for the stage, but also for life. To call Mr. West merely a teacher is a complete understatement. He is so much more than a teacher; he is a director, a motivator, a counselor and a true visionary. Mr. West is a person that some can only hope to meet once in their lifetime, and I feel absolutely honored to have had him as a director. He has taught me so much in the short amount of time that I have known him, not only about acting, but more importantly about life. He has taught me that through dedication, a good work-ethic and a little risk-taking, you can achieve the impossible. Every second spent with Mr. West is a lesson and there is not enough time in the world for him to teach me all he has to offer. Thanks to you, Mr. West, when the lights come on, I’ll be ready for this.

Out of all the fantastic educators I have been blessed to encounter, one in particular stands out. From day one Mr. Collins has helped me foster a love for knowledge and learning. Perhaps the most important thing I have learned from him is that only when we challenge ourselves, can we hope to progress and thrive. He has helped me push myself, while also having fun. He has always been there to help me, from high school and college preparation to general discussions on life and everything in between. His guidance has helped me learn that change is inevitable, but it is not something to be feared. His humorous outlook and steady presence has only served to enhance my high school experience. I have never met such a strange woman before! Ms. Griffin is incredible; she would point out mistakes made in my search for “perfection,” but rather than criticism, it felt like those were words of encouragement. The first time we met, we argued over a sketchbook because it was only for her students. A few months later, I transferred into her class because I really wanted that sketchbook, but what kept me in it was her knowledge and her strange humor. What I cherished the most was that she pushed me towards the diversity in media, the messy ink on the floor and the blank canvases. She is unique; she is the white ink on painted black and the black ink on colored lines. Ms. Griffin, the mystical and ultimate beast, thank you for teaching me the joy of being myself and thank you for giving me those compliments when I was fishing for it.

I had the pleasure of beginning high school with a Theatre Tech Freshman Varsity class taught by Mrs. Heath, or rather Ms. Webber at the time. Her class was unique and insightful, and I wouldn’t have learned how to do a number of things if it wasn’t for her, like how to use power tools and the many conventional uses of gaff tape. It is now my last year of high school and I have had her class for every single year ever since, being arguably my most favorite every time. I will miss her jaded and sarcastic nature because it is what makes her such an amiable person. She is more than a teacher, she is an employer, mentor and confidant. Mrs. Heath has always been supportive and believed that I could succeed. I will truly miss her and her class.

The dream in my eyes was always to become a medical doctor, but it wasn’t until I met Dr. Rodriguez that I could actually imagine that dream becoming a reality. The honor of being the student of someone who has walked that long journey, is a gift that I couldn’t be anymore thankful for. After taking her classes for almost three years, it is safe to say that Dr. Rodriguez is an inspiration. Her ways teach me the discipline needed to survive the real world and how hard work can help me reach potentials that I could never imagine. Her teaching allows me insight to what happens in the medical scene that most high school students wouldn’t have the chance to experience. Dr. Rodriguez understands what it takes to make it in this big world, but still reminds us to enjoy our lives and to always make the best of it. She helped guide me to be successful in my recent competitions and taught me the ways of leadership. I will forever cherish the memories of Dr. Rodriguez.

When I first met Ms. Dano, I saw a strict, intimidating teacher that gave a lot of work. I struggled in her class because I thought I could just waltz in there and get a high grade easily. Boy, was I wrong. Throughout my time spent with her, I learned that success does not come without effort. She inspired me to start working for my grades and try my best. I’ve made many mistakes while with her, but learned from them and they have helped me for the future. Her enthusiasm and passion for teaching serve as the key to my motivation because she already does everything that she can do to help. She does not fail to make time in her schedule if there needs be any extra teaching or review outside of class and is open to different suggestions. I can depend on her whenever I need assistance because she genuinely cares about her students. I am so proud that I got to spend part of my high school career in her chemistry class. Minus 10!
