Our Mission: The Dover Public Library is committed to being the center of community life in Dover, Ohio. It is our mission to support life-long learning by providing information and opportunities for personal enrichment and enjoyment to people of all ages and from all backgrounds in Dover and throughout the Tuscarawas Valley.

A few summers ago my family and I visited the famous Chautauqua Institution, a nonprofit, 750-acre community on Chautauqua Lake. According to their mission statement, “Chautauqua is dedicated to the exploration of the best in human values and the enrichment of life through a program that explores the important religious, social and political issues of our times; stimulates provocative, thoughtful involvement of individuals and families in creative response to such issues; and promotes excellence and creativity in the appreciation, performance and teaching of the arts.” My wife learned mosaics, I took a class on the Vietnam War, and our boys learned to sail a boat. Not once did we turn on the television. To me, that sounds like the purpose of the public library. Our new Third Thursday Series challenges you to learn something new. Whether it is craft related, beekeeping, or art appreciation, our library has become your own personal Chautauqua. We have been here since 1902 and we look forward to reinventing ourselves as the needs of the community change. In 2015, I challenge you to find your own Chautauqua at the Dover Public Library! 2

Staff Profile Name: Rick Slayman Position: Custodian Family: Wife, Michelle (25 years!) and Daughter, Catherine What do you like most about working at the library? I like talking to the patrons and participating in the B.Y.O.B. Book Club. I like watching our library grow and change a little bit every day. And I like the staff here at Dover Public Library. We have a great group of people working here. Who are your favorite authors? I enjoy reading books by Gregory Maguire and L. Frank Baum. I like reading books with humor and adventure in them. What do you like to do in your free time? I like taking naps, doing yard work, visiting Amish Country and spending time with my family. People would be surprised to know: I am really a rather shy person. I usually keep to myself until someone initiates a conversation. But, once that happens, look out! 3
