Newell Barney MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS HANDBOOK Carl Holgerson, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director NBMS

Dear Student Athlete and Parent/Guardian, The Newell Barney Athletic Department would like to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year. We are very excited about the up and coming school year and look forward to working with you and your student athletes. In an effort to improve communication between you and our athletic staff, the attached handbook has been developed. The purpose of the handbook is to share with you the policies, procedures and expectations for the Newell Barney Middle School student athletes. Please be aware that sometimes, due to circumstances beyond our control, a single game date or time may need to be changed. We will try our best to notify you in a timely manner if that situation does occur. A Newell Barney student who is participating in athletics at our schools should commit to good training habits, attend practice regularly and maintain proper conduct. Failure to comply with these rules may result in expulsion from the program. At Newell Barney, we believe in the rules that govern the spirit of competition. These rules need your support. Please refer to the handbook or call us if you have any questions. As always, parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend all sporting events. We encourage each and every one of you to participate, have fun and receive full benefits from the program. Students, we look forward to your participation in Buccaneer Athletics. Sincerely,

ELIGIBILITY All students participating in extra-curricular activities must meet eligibility requirements every 4 1/2 weeks. At the end of each progress or quarter report period, student grades will be reviewed. Students receiving an “F’ in any class shall be declared ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities during the following week. Students with a failing grade are required to attend a minimum of four consecutive days of study hall/tutoring. These students will then be monitored on a weekly basis until the next progress or quarter report period to determine their eligibility status. A student that receives ISS the day of a game will not be allowed to compete. Grade checks for students participating in extracurricular activities will be completed during the third week of each 4 1/2-week period in order to alert students and their parents or guardians of pending ineligibility. Coaches will check grades or provide a grade sheet to students during the third week to be filled out by their teachers. It is the responsibility of the student to turn in their

grade sheet to their coach. If the student fails to turn in their grade sheet he/she automatically becomes ineligible for four consecutive days. The Athletic Director will communicate with parents/guardians when ineligibility has been determined (based upon 4 1/2-week reports). Student athletes failing first semester or attending summer school (Edgenuity) may try-out for athletic teams. However, student athletes must fulfill all grade/credit requirements prior to participating in any meets or games. PARTICIPATION FEES Newell Barney Middle School sports fees are as follows: $70.00 per child, per sport. There is a family maximum of $210.00. Fees are per school not district wide. All money raised will go towards transportation, equipment and officials. All students must have a sports physical completed and on file in the school office prior to being allowed to participate on any team. MIDDLE SCHOOL ALCOHOL/DRUG AND TOBACCO POLICY The possession or use of any drugs, alcohol or tobacco products by a Newell Barney Middle School student athlete will not be tolerated. Any violation concerning drugs, alcohol, or tobacco will be presented by the Athletic Department to the School Administration. Disciplinary action will be decided by the School Administration and Athletic Department. Parents and guests are likewise forbidden to use drugs, alcohol or tobacco products on any school campus or at any school sponsored event. CLASS ATTENDANCE To participate in an athletic contest or practice, a student must attend a minimum of four class periods. EQUIPMENT AND UNIFORMS •! School uniforms are to be used or worn in competition, practice or at the coach’s discretion. •! Student athletes should always respect and take care of all equipment. Students will be held responsible for unusual abuse or loss of equipment. •! It is the athlete’s responsibility to return all uniforms and equipment immediately following the last game of the season. Failure to do so will result in a charge to that student. •! Students failing to turn in all equipment issued to them or failing to pay for lost items shall not receive any honors or awards for that sport or be permitted to take part in other sports until satisfactory clearance is made.

•! Game days are designated as “dress up” days. On those days boys will be required to wear appropriate pants, shirts, and ties. Girls will be required to wear dresses, slacks and blouse, or a skirt and blouse. COMPLETION OF A SPORT It is the policy of the Newell Barney Middle School Athletic Department that students remain committed to an activity they begin. This means being at all practices and games for the duration of the entire season. An athlete who quits a team must have the approval of the coach and the Athletic Director. Quitting after the team has been selected is not fair to an athlete’s teammates and coach. Quitting will only be approved if it appears to be for the overall benefit of the student. Should an athlete decide to quit the team without approval being granted, he/she may not transfer to another sport, club or activity nor participate in the next sports season. EARLY DISMISSAL Due to travel time for away games, some athletic contests will result in the student athlete being dismissed early from class. It is the athlete’s responsibility to get assignments and to make up all missed work. PRACTICES Practices will be scheduled at the discretion of the coach and Athletic Director. Generally, practices will be held on non-game days from 6:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. or 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 pm Monday-Thursday. The Queen Creek Unified School District does not provide transportation for extracurricular activities. Student Athletes must be picked up by 5:30 p.m. unless directed by the coach. Students need to be picked up in the parent drop/off pick/up area on the north side of the school. If an athlete has three unexcused absences from practice, the coach and Athletic Director should hold a conference with the player. This conference could result in the athlete’s dismissal from the team. TRANSPORTATION OF ATHLETIC TEAMS All Newell Barney Middle School Athletes must use district transportation to the site of all away games. The only exception to this will be: parents may transport their son/daughter from any away games with prior approval from the Athletic Director and after signing the athlete out with the coach.

AWARDS AND BANQUETS Four sports banquets are planned annually. All participants receive recognition. Some students are recognized for their athletic excellence for that season.

Newell Barney Middle School Student Athlete Values Courage Doing what is right, even when it is hard to do. A person can show courage by doing something that he or she is ordinarily afraid of, like reading aloud when called on in class or giving a presentation in front of a group of people.

Persistence Continuing to work toward a goal, even though a person faces obstacles or barriers. A persistent student works on a problem and does not give up until he or she finds the correct answer.

Integrity Upholding one’s values. One way to show integrity is by standing up for what one believes, despite peer pressure to do otherwise.

Justice Treating all people fairly and equally, no matter who they are. Today, boys’ and girls’ educational and sports programs receive equal funding in schools.

Teamwork Working together toward a common goal. Students use teamwork not only by playing on sports teams, but also by working together on a class project.

Citizenship Making a contribution which improves the lives of others. Young people around the world can show citizenship by working to improve the quality of life for all.

Determination Sticking to a goal. A student who is determined to succeed gets up early to study for a test, just as a determined athlete practices, exercises, and eats well to achieve his or her performance.

Commitment Making a promise. Students can show commitment by joining school clubs, just as people show commitment to their families by helping family members.

Excellence Doing the best that one possibly can. A person’s level of excellence is unique to that person. Students show excellence by using their skills to the best of their ability.
