SHERIDAN MIDDLE SCHOOL HAWK

December Student of the Month:

Addyson Ream

Addyson is an 8th grader and the daughter of Ryan and Sara Ream. Addyson was nominated by several of her teachers. Mrs. Policka states, “Addyson comes to class on time and prepared to learn; she is respectful, polite, and kind to others. She is conscientious, gives her personal best, and asks for help when needed”. Please check with your child to see if they are in need of school supplies. Our students have been diligently writing, reading, solving problems, creating and presenting projects; they have been actively engaged in learning. Thus, they may be in need of notebook paper, spiral notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, binders, etc. Thank you!

e-Learning Days Over the summer we received notification from the Indiana Department of Education that Sheridan Middle School and Sheridan High School were once again accepted for the Flex Pilot Program in the area of e-Learning. This program will allow Sheridan Middle School and Sheridan High School students the opportunity to "learn from home" while teachers spend time at school in professional development. We have been approved for four days in the 2016-2107 school year.: *October 5, 2016

*January 11, 2017

*February 8, 2017

*March 8, 2017

What can you expect on an e-Learning Day? Students will be responsible for completing assignments provided by his/her teachers through online delivery. The students will not be required to come to school on these two days but are accountable for checking-in for attendance, online assignments, and contacting his/her teachers if they have questions. Over the next few weeks and immediately prior to each e-Learning Flex Day, teachers will be providing specific instructions and expectations to your child. Sheridan Middle School and Sheridan High School will be open and the media center will welcome any student needing access to the Internet. Students may also take advantage of food service with both breakfast and lunch being available onsite. Transportation will also be available for students who need to come to school for Internet access or for food ser-

vice. If your middle school or high school student is coming to school for food service, for access to the Internet or computers, or in need of transportation to take advantage of these services, he/she must be signed up by Friday, September 30, 2016 so that we can plan accordingly. Please contact Sarina Marquis (x3321) for a middle school student or Linda Fausset (x4401) for a high school student to sign-up for any of these services. Sheridan Elementary School students will be in attendance at school on our e-Learning. All bus routes will run on the same schedules as a regular school day.

Should you have questions, concerns, or need additional information please contact us.

Happy New Year! Not only is the beginning of a new year, it is officially the beginning of a new semester. It is also a good time to encourage your child to reflect on their academic accomplishments over the last semester and begin thinking about future goals. Where do they want life to lead them? How do they want to earn a living? How can one prepare for those next steps? With every experience, we all continue learn more about who we are, what makes us happy, what comes easily and in what areas do we need more support, and along the way we learn the value of hard work, tenacity, kindness, caring, giving, and the value of friendship. As we begin this new year, we must be ready for those new opportunities knowing that we will continue to grow and learn from each new experience. In other words, education will guide us and prepare us for those next steps, no matter if we are in high school or beyond. Report cards for the 1st Semester will be distributed on January 10. Whether you are a student or a parent, please realize that academic accomplishments are not always evident in the grade that is reported on the grade card. Your child may be very proud of a new concept they learned this year that was difficult for them in the past. They might enjoy studying about a period in history, a novel study that sparked a personal interest, a strategy they learned to help them with organizational skills, and/or how to balance a chemical equation. When students are able to discuss what they are reading, studying, and experiencing with others, they are able to become engaged in their learning. How do people learn best? “People learn…10% of what they read, 20% of what they hear, 30% of what they see, 50% of what they both see and hear, 70% of what they say as they talk, and retain 95% what they teach to someone else." (Elkwell and Shanker. 1988) So as a parent, I know I have puzzled over my children’s homework on several occasions, only to have them “teach” me what they thought I should have already known. In these instances, although I really wasn’t “helping” with their homework, I was helping them in their learning quest. When we listen to children share their learning experiences, ideas, frustrations, and achievements, we are actually helping them to learn and think for themselves. It is also an opportune time to help our children create, evaluate, reflect, and revise realistic personal and educational goals. It is our hope that your child experiences the love for learning here at school and will become a life-long learner as a result of the educational opportunities provided. We also hope that you feel connected to the school community. As always, should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact us. And again, happy new year to you and your family! 21st Century Scholars Program The state of Indiana wants to help students go to college! Families who are residents of Indiana may qualify for their children to receive money for their college education. To be eligible, seventh and eighth grade students must meet the family income guidelines. Eligible seventh and eighth grade students must enroll before June 30, 2017 and keep a pledge of good citizenship throughout middle school and high school. Apply online at www.scholars.in.gov. For additional information, please contact Mrs. Zachery at 317-758-6780 ext. 3323.
