Join us for this free community concert, an early-autumn delight at Lake Harriet. Pack a picnic basket and bring the family to south Minneapolis for an afternoon of glorious music to celebrate the start of our 2014-15 season! The patriarch of Russian classical music, Glinka turns Pushkin poetry into musical gold in Ruslan and Ludmila. Strauss delights with that merry prankster, Till Eulenspiegel, a wonderful showpiece for horn and clarinet. Tragic romance is heartbreakingly rendered in Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. And we dance the afternoon away, courtesy of Borodin's sprightly Polovtsian Dances.

The Orchestra joins a treasured friend, the superb Alisa Weilerstein, in a performance of Barber's Cello Concerto, known for its brilliant musical fireworks. Don Quixote Salome’s Dance (Dance of the Seven Veils), from Salome Suite from Der Rosenkavalier

In Don Quixote, the tone poem Strauss based on Cervantes’ immortal novel, Principal Cello Anthony Ross takes the title role, joined by Principal Viola Thomas Turner as his faithful squire Sancho Panza. Strauss called it "Fantastic Variations," and we think you'll agree! Salome’s Dance of the Seven Veils is one of the most sensual (and shocking) scenes in all of opera. Osmo Vänskä is clarinetist in the Suite for Winds, joined by 12 musicians for this early Strauss work, showing Wagner's influence on the young composer. He returns to the podium to lead the dancing Burleske, featuring magnetic young pianist Andrew Staupe. The mood darkens in Metamorphosen for strings, viewed as the composer’s lament for the cultural devastation of World War II. Culminating in celestial harp arpeggios, the ethereal tone poem Death and Transfiguration meditates on the life and death of an artist. A star from our 2010 Composer Institute, Polina Nazaykinskaya, says her emotional Winter Bells comes "from the depth of my heart." Keyboard wonder Jonathan Biss brings out all the depth and operatic drama in this concerto from Mozart. And the lush, characterful scoring in Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony—written in just one month—tells stories without words. Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu is on the podium for this stirring concert. String Sextet from Capriccio / Serenade in E-flat major An Alpine Symphony

Our final Strauss celebration opens with the radiant string sextet from his last opera, Capriccio. We jump to the beginning of the composer’s career for his Serenade in E-flat major, written when he was just 17. For our grand finale, we have the majestic masterwork, An Alpine Symphony, which uses Strauss' entire palette of sonorities. [Brass selection to be announced] Concerto for Two Bassoons Symphony No. 5

This concert shines the spotlight on our bassoon section, particularly Principal Bassoon John Miller, Jr., now in his 44th year with the Orchestra—and the longest-tenured principal player ever in the Orchestra's history. He solos in Dietter's Concerto for Two Bassoons, with the second part taken in turn by each of his section colleagues. Framing their distinctive, mellow double-reed sound are Gabrieli's rich brass harmonies and Tchaikovsky's impassioned Symphony No. 5, a meditation on fate that concludes in a triumphal march. On the podium is our former music director Eiji Oue, famed for his charismatic performances. Come celebrate the many moods of a grand symphony orchestra! A dream of a midwinter! All the world—especially Orchestra Hall—is a stage when the spotlight is on Shakespeare–inspired works. Revel in the power of music and words, with repertoire from Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn, Prokofiev and Bernstein, Walton and Sibelius, all displaying the Bard’s tragic and comic best. Osmo Vänskä and esteemed guest conductors direct the action from the podium, culminating in Vänskä’s own thrilling rendition of The Tempest.

The curtain rises on our Shakespeare Winterfest with Prince Hal, newly crowned King of England, leading his men to victory over the French. William Walton penned the score for Lawrence Olivier’s 1944 film version of Henry V—and it is pure cinematic sweep. Mark Wigglesworth then leads our star musicians into the medieval forest of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony. Called “Romantic” by the composer himself, the work is his most popular, and conjures storybook castles, mounted knights and the call to the hunt. Shakespeare Winterfest comes to its dramatic conclusion with The Tempest, as interpreted by Sibelius and Osmo Vänskä, who leads his own arrangement of this suite in a first-time performance in Minnesota narrated by Joe Dowling, Director of the Guthrie Theater. The gifted mezzo Lilli Paasikivi, principal soloist and artistic director of the Finnish National Opera, sings the role of the spirit slave Ariel, who helps conjure the island storm of the title. But first the stage is set by Berlioz, a great Shakespeare fan, and his lovely six-movement song cycle Les Nuits d’été. Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream Violin Concerto Concert Music for Strings and Brass Suite No. 2 from Daphnis and Chloe

Theater and genius in their many forms are showcased, from the stage to ballet, even to Hollywood! Mendelssohn produced his famous Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream when he was just 17, and it never fails to delight. Erich Korngold made his mark in ’30s and ’40s movie spectacles, but he also composed remarkable concert music. Gil Shaham (hailed by the Los Angeles Times for his “brilliant, almost ecstatic performance”) has made the Korngold Concerto one of his signature works. We hear two more "soundtracks"—a striking strings-and-brass showpiece by Hindemith, spiced with jazz, and Ravel’s timeless Daphnis and Chloe, written for the legendary Sergei Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes. Russian Easter Overture Exotic Birds The Lark Ascending Church Windows

Osmo Vänskä begins our tribute to spirit and spring with Rimsky-Korsakov’s transcendent Russian Easter Overture, celebrating both the resurrection of Christ and the rebirth of the earth after the death of winter. The arrival of spring is further heralded in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, its exquisite melodies delivered by Concertmaster Erin Keefe. Messiaen called birds “the greatest musicians” on the planet; hear them sing in this enchanting showpiece for piano. The program concludes with Respighi’s Church Windows, each movement depicting a different biblical scene.

The always-zestful Mark Wigglesworth conducts this grand exit, which fortunately for us all, is only temporary. Riots broke out when Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring premiered in Paris in 1913. Audiences were shocked by its themes of pagan worship and virgin sacrifice. A century later, this groundbreaking masterpiece is as riveting as ever. Kansas City Symphony Music Director Michael Stern conducts this exciting program, which also features Rachmaninoff’s demanding Third Piano Concerto performed by the outstanding Simon Trpčeski. The concert opens with Griffes’ The Pleasure Dome of Kubla-Khan, inspired by the Coleridge poem about paradise, both sacred and savage. American Voices: Made in America

Divertimento American Nomad [World Premiere] Clarinet Concerto Acadia

A roster of Minnesota Orchestra stars headlines this concert of American classics. Former Principal Clarinet Burt Hara returns from Los Angeles to perform Brooklyn-born Aaron Copland’s famous Clarinet Concerto. Trumpeter Charles Lazarus takes center stage with the jazz-influenced American Nomad, a new work written for him by Twin Cities-based composer Steve Heitzeg. And former Associate Conductor Mischa Santora leads the program that also features compositions by two more New Yorkers: Leonard Bernstein’s witty, nostalgic Divertimento and Judd Greenstein’s multifaceted Acadia, which received its world premiere in 2012 in a “fiery, committed performance” (Star Tribune) and was commissioned by hundreds of Minnesota Orchestra supporters and the Orchestra. We begin with the extraordinary Garrick Ohlsson and his marvelous rendition of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. Leading this youthful and vigorous early work—the composer wrote it when he was just 25—is our esteemed Conductor Laureate, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, approaching his 92nd birthday. Our second week of piano greats features the wildly popular André Watts with Brahms’ grand and warm Piano Concerto No. 2. The composer called it “a tiny, tiny, pianoforte concerto with a tiny, tiny wisp of a scherzo.” It is anything but that. Osmo Vänskä brings his inimitable touch to a program that opens with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 3, soon to be recorded by the Orchestra as part of a multi-year exploration of the Finnish national hero’s masterpieces.

Blow It Up, Start Again Quiet City Ecstatic Waters Harmonium Lux Aurumque

Grammy-winning American conductor and composer Eric Whitacre may be most famous for his cutting-edge virtual choir projects (for a preview of his Lux Aurumque, watch the virtual version on YouTube), but he’s also devoted to collaborating with Twin Cities artists. A rock star of the global choral scene, Whitacre returns to lead an evening of otherworldly harmonizing mixed with contemporary orchestral works, ranging from Copland’s 1941 Quiet City to a brand new, still-in-progress work by the conductor himself. The program concludes with the stirring Lux Aurumque—the “Light and Gold” of our title.

Vänskä and the Orchestra complete their cycle of Sibelius symphonies with his final two: the mysterious Sixth and the one-movement Seventh, its C-major ending a triumphant culmination of the composer’s life’s work. The program concludes—as the season began—with Mahler. His epic First Symphony takes us on a sonic journey full of orchestral color, for a celebratory finish to this historic season.

Imagine you’re journeying all the way down the Mighty Mississippi to Louisiana, heading for an evening of pure, unadulterated Crescent City jazz at Preservation Hall. For more than half a century, this historic French Quarter venue has been the place to hear the music that made the city famous. The legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band—whose founding members played with the likes of Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong—keeps the tradition alive. Down in New Orleans they play in a hall with no air conditioning, no concessions and no amenities of any kind. But here, hallelujah, you can enjoy their glorious sound in the comfort of Orchestra Hall. Joining as special guest soloist is our very own artistic director of jazz and trumpeter extraordinaire, Irvin Mayfield.

Children and Students

All concerts are open to children ages 6-17 when accompanied by an adult. Children of all ages are welcome to our designated youth and family programs (see page 21). All children, regardless of age, must have a ticket to enter the performance. Your child may sit on your lap as long as his/her head can fit underneath your chin. Taller children seated on a parent’s/caregiver’s lap can obstruct the view of other patrons. With the purchase of most Classical subscription packages, you can add a Young Listener (age 6-17) package for $12 per concert. Service Charges

There are no service charges for in-person transactions. There is a $6 service charge per transaction for all phone and mail orders. (This charge is waived for subscribers and group purchasers ordering by phone or mail.) Save $1 by purchasing your tickets online or by receiving your tickets via e-mail. A non-discountable facility fee of $2-$5 is included in the published price of each individual ticket. Subscription orders are subject to an $8 processing fee.
