New Music in New Places Imagine a capacity crowd of nearly 200 people outside the beluga pool of the Vancouver Aquarium under a moon-lit sky. They have been led to this place through several galleries by Kathryn Cernauskas playing travelling music on her flute. Across the water, Heather Pawsey sings the Princess Aria from Princess of the Stars by R. Murray Schafer and audience members collectively draw in their breath as the belugas begin to dance and add their own songs. Later the audience is seated by the underwater whale viewing area as they hear Pawsey, Cernauskas and pianist Karen Shumka give the world premiere of Leslie Uyeda’s Whales. This incorporates the sounds of whales seen swimming beyond the glass walls. A few months earlier another capacity crowd of about 300 in the Dominion Observatory (the "Centre of the Universe" ) listens to Victoria’s vocal sextet Hexaphone sing Linda Catlin Smith’s Her Harbour in the aweinspiring space under the telescope. The music is repeated in three other interesting acoustical spaces of the centre. A capacity audience is also crammed into Fisgard Lighthouse, a national historic site, to hear Aventa perform instrumental and electroacoustic music.

2006 Symposium “New Music in New Places” is the topic of a public symposium that will be held on Friday afternoon, September 29 2006. It will be taking place in the Asia Pacific Hall at the S.F.U. Morris J.Wosk Centre for Dialogue, in downtown Vancouver. The symposium will attract performers, composers and listeners who have heard contemporary music in alternate venues as well as music-lovers who are intrigued by the possibilities. What features have made past successful events spine-tingling? What are the best recipes for new music in new public spaces? This is an opportunity for those who create, perform and listen to music to envision future events enriching our musical life and celebrating music in new and unexplored environments. As an artistic focus to the dialogue, the 12 voices of Musica Intima will sing a short specially commissioned work by Jordan Nobles around the perimeter of the Asia Pacific Hall, and electroacoustic music by BC composers will frame the event. The afternoon will feature interesting speakers that will be making short presentations. Registration is at 11:45 am Friday September 29 at the Wosk Centre (580 West Hastings Street in Vancouver, on the corner of West Hastings and Seymour). Registration is $10 and free for students. A light lunch and beverages will be provided. Pre-registration is available by contacting the Canadian Music Centre, and is recommended as seating is limited to 154. All are welcome. Murray Adaskin Grand Piano Project March 28, 2006 marked the birth centenary of Dr. Murray Adaskin, one of Canada’s most stellar composers. He created wonderful solo and ensemble works and enjoyed highest esteem among his colleagues as a conductor, arts administrator, Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre, and more. Beloved teacher and mentor to generations of students, Dr. Adaskin wrote nearly two thousand recommendation letters for them during his career as part of a lifelong focus of encouraging young composers. The BC Centre celebrated his centenary with a reception at which Patricia Au performed, free of charge, Adaskin’s Piano Sonata and Savannah. She played on Murray Adaskin’s grand piano which is now housed at the Canadian Music Centre. Four agencies, the Victoria Piano Summer School (VPSS), Canadian Music Centre (CMC) - BC Regional Office, BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association (BCRMTA) and Victoria Conservatory of Music, joined together on a project to place Murray Adaskin’s 1961 Heintzmann grand piano at the CMC office in Vancouver. Preserving this instrument on which Dr. Adaskin composed many works will benefit Canada’s musical history and aid the musical community in many ways. Planned and potential events include: - student performances presented by Registered Music Teachers, individual studios, and other groups with special provisions to encourage use by out-oftown teachers and students when visiting Vancouver - Canadian-music presentations by composers, musicologists and performers - varied professional concerts suitable for intimate audience size Page 3
- workshops and master classes, for piano and for piano-accompanied instruments - composition classes and workshops - composer receptions, CD launches, award presentations and other events with live music - receptions for nearby artistic or other activities. This fine performing instrument will add flexibility and revenue-earning potential to CMC facilities, and will be of great practical value for musicians choosing and studying Canadian music. The cost of transportation, as well as half the cost of restoring this magnificent instrument has been donated. CMC-BC seeks about four thousand more dollars to complete this project. We ask you to join in this vital and timely project. Please send your donations marked Adaskin Piano to: 837 Davie Street Vancouver, BC V6Z 1B7 Donor names will be listed on a plaque at CMC, and all donations are tax-credible.
Library Renewal Project The CMC-BC Region library renewal project, which has been underway for several years, is nearing completion. Without the generous assistance of all of the sponsors, it would have been impossible to accomplish the objectives set forth for this project. We are incredibly grateful to all of the projects supporters. With their combined support, the differences that can be seen and experienced, the benefits to our library patrons and in turn to our Associate Composers increases ten-fold! The taste-buds of researchers, performers, teachers, and students alike are sure to be tantalized. During this time, Caverns: For Solo Jazz Tenor Saxophone and Wind Ensemble and Trajectories: A Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble were premiered. Besides the two commissioned works, each concert in the 05-06 season included an older piece by Fred Stride. The University of Victoria Wind Symphony has released a CD featuring Impressions, a work that is also featured in an instructional DVD created by Dr. Gerry King on the craft of conducting. The Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra has just finished recording a CD of new pieces for large jazz ensemble to be released in late 2006, and Fred is currently completing a large scale commission for bass clarinet quartet.

U In December, Music in the Morning presented five sold out performances of Leslie Uyeda’s programme of new music entitled GraceNotes. In March, Heather Pawsey, Kathryn Cernauskas and Karen Shumka premiered Whales, a new trio for soprano, flute, piano and pre-recorded beluga and orca song in a gala concert at the Vancouver Aquarium. She is now working on a new song cycle for soprano, clarinet and piano.
W In March of 2006, the remainder of Elliot Weisgarber's compositions for flute and piano were committed to disc in an archival recording made specifically for the CMC's library by the late composer's daughter, flutist Karen Suzanne Smithson and his good friend, pianist Winfried Rompf. Five works were recorded, and the scores as well as the CD were submitted to the CMC. The works included are as follows: Aki-no-Hinode (Autumn Sunrise), Kojo-no-Tsuki, Sonata for Flute and Piano, Three Pieces for Flute and Piano, and Tsugaru Yama Uta. During the winter of 2004, Charles Wilson’s The Summoning of Everyman was performed by Opera-in-concert at the Jane Mallet Theatre in Toronto.
Z Jin Zhang is currently working on a CD of his compositions, a project that is being financially supported through a special sound recording grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. The CD is expected to be released in the spring of 2007. He is also working on a commissioned piece for the Orchid Ensemble, again with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

filling in the gaps of the library collection housed at CMC-BC. There are many new treasures to be explored. Several hundred scores, recordings, and dissertations have been purchased to round out both reference and circulating materials. We have replaced items gone missing, added items that we had not previously held in the BC Region's collection, and purchased additional copies of high demand pedagogical works. Significant additions can be found in piano, vocal, and chamber music of varying degrees of difficulty.
After 27 years, the jewel centrepiece of our setting had become somewhat chipped and tarnished. The initiative of the CMC-BC Regions library renewal project has seen the gem restored. If you ever find yourself in Vancouver, we hope that you will visit us and see first-hand the magnificent changes that have resulted from this necessary and worthwhile undertaking.
To accommodate the wealth of new library acquisitions, new shelving was purchased and installed, improving the ease of usability for people browsing the stacks for recordings to listen to, and music to perform, study, teach, share, and enjoy. Additionally, a safe work environment has been established by bracing the library's shelving for earthquake preparedness. Other upgrades have also taken place, one of which is the purchase of a new electric keyboard for patron use in the library. Two can listen, as this
