Welcome!

Dear music lovers, WELCOME TO THE 2015 SEASON! Every new concert season represents many, many hours of work from many creative minds. Then as each season unfolds, concert by concert, the ninety or so musicians of your orchestra – the SSO – give heart and soul to performances that we hope will excite you and move you. We do all this because we love great music. But ultimately, we do this for you in our audience. And it’s you we have in mind as we make the programs you’ll find in this book, bringing together artists we admire and the music that excites us. Some of those artists and music will be old friends, making a welcome return to the stage of the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. The wonderful Anne-Sophie Mutter has, like me, fallen head over heels in love with Australia and now makes her third visit to Sydney. Stuart Skelton, an astonishing voice on the world stage, will sing his first Tristan here. We’ve also sought out the rising stars, or those who’ve yet to be wooed to Australian shores. Chinese superstar Yuja Wang will play Brahms’s second piano concerto. Pianist Peter Serkin, a truly inspiring musician, will play Bartók with the orchestra and then a riveting recital program. Among the musical highlights will be Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, its full-blooded drama enhanced by the visuals of S Katy Tucker. And I’m looking forward to sharing with you my fondness for the Schumann symphonies – four pivotal and inspiring creations of the orchestral repertoire. Of course, it wouldn’t be a concert season without Beethoven, and it’s Beethoven who, in the end, provides the words that sum up this season and our motivation as musicians. They come from the manuscript of his epic Missa Solemnis, on which he wrote: ‘From the heart…to the heart.’ And so we offer this season, from our hearts to yours.

In 2015 David Robertson brings us a Schumann experience, conducting all four symphonies in just under two weeks. Our Chief Conductor finds these symphonies fascinating – he adores their themes, their colours and their rich musical insights – and he wants to share them with Sydney music lovers.
APT Master Series Wed 11 Feb | 8pm Fri 13 Feb | 8pm Sat 14 Feb | 8pm
Schumann’s symphonies sit between Beethoven’s groundbreaking creations and the late Romantic symphonies of Bruckner and Mahler. Radical change is in the air, but Schumann finds that bridge between Classical control and Romantic poetry. Joining us for the fortnight is Christian Tetzlaff to play Mendelssohn’s irresistible violin concerto and Jörg Widmann’s latest, composed especially for him. Like Schumann’s symphonies, but in their own ways, these concertos push the boundaries of Classical form in finding new ways for the violin to sing. Experience Schumann’s unique world of musical feeling and the muscular agility and sublime expression of a fine symphony orchestra. A treat!

SCHUMANN Symphony No.2 SCHUMANN Symphony No.1 (Spring) MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto in E minor
Schumann and Mendelssohn make for a program of pure Romantic lyricism, with joyful, energetic music you can’t help but love. Where Schumann sings his joy with spontaneity and a delight in the sound of the orchestra, Mendelssohn seems to dance for joy with nimbleness and a lightness of touch in his ever-popular violin concerto.

SCHUMANN Symphony No.3 (Rhenish) David Robertson conductor Christian Tetzlaff violin You’ll hear Schumann’s rich Romantic sound at its most compelling in his Third and Fourth symphonies. This is evocative and exhilarating music, with infectious melodies pulsing to the rhythm of nature. Between them, Christian Tetzlaff introduces Australian audiences to a violin concerto by his friend Jörg Widmann. It’s a great companion, with its breathtaking variety of expression and mood, and its feeling of Romantic heroism as the violin bravely sings and searches. “Christian Tetzlaff’s account of the violin concerto Jörg Widmann composed for him in 2007 is so astonishingly vivid and secure…Tetzlaff makes every second matter.” THE GUARDIAN, 2013 Schumann’s Third and Fourth symphonies can also be heard on 20 and 21 February.

His Rituel in Memoriam for Bruno Maderna – a tribute to a fellow composer – is an extraordinary spectacle, with eight independent groups of musicians on stage united under one conductor. Debussy’s brilliant and mysterious evocation of the sea, La Mer, offers a musician’s response to the sea’s everdissolving views, murmurs and roars, teasing breezes and ceaseless motion. You’ll also be the first to hear the latest creation of SSO violinist Georges Lentz, a brilliantly original composer of our own place and time.

SCHUMANN Symphony No.4* SCHUMANN Symphony No.3 (Rhenish)* David Robertson conductor One day Schumann journeyed up the Rhine, saw Cologne and was instantly enchanted. Above all, he was inspired by the city’s mighty, unfinished cathedral, a landmark as striking as our own Sydney Opera House – and the beloved Rhenish symphony was born. SSO violinist Georges Lentz is also an internationally celebrated composer. “His music…moves without being romantic or backward-looking…full of icy beauty and contemplative austerity” (Le Monde, Paris). Schumann was similarly forwardlooking, experimenting with the symphonic form he inherited from Haydn and Mozart and finding something fresh and wonderful in it, as you’ll discover in his sublime Third and Fourth symphonies.

FAURÉ Préludes, Op.103 SCRIABIN 24 Preludes, Op.11 CHOPIN 24 Préludes, Op.28 Originally the prelude was a warm-up piece, a chance for keyboardists to check their tuning. But Bach and company had other ideas and by the time you get to Chopin, the prelude was an art form in its own right. Chopin travels the 24 major and minor keys, each prelude painting a picture – the “Raindrop” is the most famous. About half a century later, the young Scriabin took Chopin’s singing style as his model, composing his own set of 24. Louis Lortie brings them together, with Fauré’s intimate and dreamy preludes to warm us to the theme.

HAYDN Symphony No.31 (Horn Signal) BERLIOZ Les Nuits d’été (Summer Nights) SCHUBERT Symphony No.4 (Tragic)
David Robertson conductor Anthony Marwood violin Music can take us on all sorts of journeys. Má Vlast is a musical journey through the landscapes and legends of Smetana’s Bohemian homeland. It frames Steven Mackey’s Beautiful Passing, written in response to the death of the composer’s mother. Mackey says this music “has to do with the violin gaining control of its own destiny, competing with, commanding and ultimately letting go of the orchestra. Her last words to me were: Please tell everyone I had a beautiful passing.” The stirring, dark moods and majestic finale of Dvorák’s Seventh complement the program beautifully, and the spirit of Brahms is never far away in this powerful and profound symphony.
David Robertson conductor Katarina Karnéus mezzo-soprano When love flies out the window, so do the dreams and fancies of youth. Berlioz’s deliciously melancholic song cycle Summer Nights explores such lost and unattainable love. Framing the nostalgic intimacy of Les Nuits d’été is Haydn’s spectacular Horn Signal Symphony, overflowing with youthful confidence, and after interval another youthful symphony, Schubert’s Fourth. Like Haydn’s, it takes its nickname from its introduction, which is gloomy and dramatic. But the nod to tragedy soon gives way to the drive and vigour of a 19-year-old composer with a lot to say and the genius to say it. Perhaps the message is that music soothes the broken heart – and you’ll get over it!

Chief Conductor David Robertson continues his series of operas in the concert hall with Wagner’s monumental Tristan und Isolde. Up there with Romeo and Juliet, this is one of the world’s great tragic love stories – sublimated passion unleashed, trust and betrayal, and a love potion masquerading as poison. From the suspended tension of the first chords to the lovers’ frenzied duet and Isolde’s cataclysmic Liebestod (Love-Death), this is what opera on a grand scale is all about. We’re thrilled to bring Stuart Skelton home to sing his first Tristan, with Christine Brewer as Isolde at the head of a top-flight cast. WIDMANN Con brio, on motifs by Beethoven Australian premiere BRAHMS Piano Concerto No.2 DVOŘÁK Symphony No.8 Lionel Bringuier conductor Yuja Wang piano Chinese piano sensation Yuja Wang was coy when Limelight Magazine asked if she had any plans to visit Australia. Now we can reveal that she’s coming to play for you here in Sydney! And she’ll take on the titanic Second Piano Concerto of Brahms – a vast, majestic and powerful work that reveals moments of exquisite tranquil intimacy. Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony begins by conjuring a serene vista of the composer’s beloved Bohemia and journeys to a joyous, dancing finale.
Yuja Wang is set to make a striking first impression in Sydney with a recital that sets the fiery passion of Spain and the hyper-Romantic virtuosity of Scriabin against the emotional depth and maturity of one of Schubert’s last piano sonatas. She’s made the mainstream news for daring fashion choices, but in musical circles she’s admired for her fearless technique, her insightful and reflective approach “A practically superhuman to music, and her charisma on the keyboard technique with artistic concert platform. And in 2015 eloquence that is second to none.” Sydneysiders will be able to experience the full extent of her SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE remarkable pianism.

SCHULTZ Sound Lur and Serpent – Fanfare Australian premiere TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No.1 RACHMANINOFF Symphony No.1 Vasily Petrenko conductor Simon Trpčeski piano This concert showcases the lushness and emotional opulence of Romantic Russians Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Australian composer Andrew Schultz sets the scene with his brass and percussion fanfare, inspired by two ancient instruments. Then it’s the flair and fireworks of Tchaikovsky’s best-known piano concerto – borrowed time and again for radio, TV and the movies – and even the Sochi Winter Olympics finale! Contrast this opulence with Rachmaninoff’s anguished and stormy First Symphony. Powerfully charged, highly dramatic music.

Isabelle Faust violin-director German virtuoso Isabelle Faust was last with us in 2012 as soloist in Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto. Now she makes a welcome return as violinist and director. She’s chosen a Rondo for violin and orchestra by Mozart and one of his elegant and lively violin concertos: the brilliant Concerto No.4 with its capricious shifts between music that’s serious and folk-like. These are matched to the rustic charm and rhythmic energy of Dvorák’s suite of popular Czech dances.
YOUR 2015 season
James Gaffigan conductor Kirill Gerstein piano Kirill Gerstein returns to Sydney to perform Rachmaninoff’s showstopping Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, with its lively, dancing rhythms, dark humour and the most memorable of melodies. He’ll need the same fiendish technique as that supernaturally gifted violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini. Shostakovich had other devils to deal with in Soviet Russia. His Fifth Symphony is one of his most popular – it had to be in order to save his life! Haunting, nervous, this is the voice of profound suffering, yet with the ironic “heroic classicism” demanded by his political masters. This is music that dances with the devil – and in doing so, celebrates life, its pleasures and its triumphs over struggles.

Bartók’s Mikrokosmos collection might begin with pieces that any beginner can play but it also contains showpieces for the most advanced of pianists. Bach, too, had students in mind when he wrote his masterly three-part inventions. Liszt’s Etudes are literally transcendent in the demands they place on the pianist. They’re called “studies” but they’re really an outrageous dare from Liszt to virtuosos everywhere, and it’s no mean feat to offer the whole dozen in a single evening.

Ravel’s sultry music easily brings to mind the colourful fiestas and hot, languid nights of Spain. Debussy sought to express the special effects of light – the soft hues of the sky as clouds move across, the flashes and spectacle of a festival, and the moon’s silvered beams on waves as sirens laugh and sing. Berlioz’s magnificent Te Deum seeks a more eternal light – this is music for celebration, full of might and majesty. Charles Dutoit – acclaimed for his performances of French music – returns to Sydney, bringing his exceptional insight and personal affinity to this brilliant program.

Now she’s found us, it seems “the queen of the violin” cannot get enough of Australia – and the feeling is mutual. Anne SophieMutter’s recent performances with the SSO have been rewarded with thunderous standing ovations, and sparkle brightly in the memories of those lucky enough to experience them. On this third visit, she brings her peerless musical insight to Dvorák’s expressive Violin Concerto and his song-like Romance for violin and orchestra. And how fitting that an evening of true greatness and heroic performance will end with Beethoven’s Eroica. Sure to sell out fast! “There are times when Mutter sounds so luscious and overthe-top that you feel guilty liking her so much, but the love that she radiates has its roots firmly in the musical phrase, and in her joy in the work.” CLASSICSTODAY.COM

Both men began work on these pieces while in Italy. Did something of the beautiful Italian scenery and atmosphere make its way into their music? Walton’s Violin Concerto reflects his love of the dazzling sunshine, the scents and colours of Italy, with its singing lyrical lines and moods that shift easily between relaxed dreaminess and poised elegance. Sibelius’s Second Symphony evokes landscapes – no doubt more Nordic than Mediterranean (but he was in the wintry Italian Alps, after all) – and overflows with fervour, splendour and grandeur. BEETHOVEN Missa Solemnis David Robertson conductor Susanna Philips soprano Olesya Petrova mezzo-soprano Stuart Skelton tenor Shenyang bass Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Chief Conductor David Robertson, the massed voices of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and an impressive line-up of soloists perform one of Beethoven’s supreme creations – his Missa Solemnis, or “solemn mass”. Beethoven wrote on the finished manuscript: “From the heart – may it return to the heart.” Dramatic, involving and as life-affirming as his “Ode to Joy”, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis will inspire anyone who hears it.
Andrew Haveron violin-director with soloists from the SSO In this concert we have two supreme masters taking inspiration from a teacher or idol. Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue reveals the old-fashioned influence of his beloved JS Bach. Leap forward to the 20th century and there’s Benjamin Britten paying homage to his teacher Frank Bridge. Finishing with a double violin concerto by another Brit, Malcolm Arnold, this concert is a virtuosic powerhouse for the strings of the SSO.
Andy Einhorn conductor Audra McDonald vocalist Having just won her sixth Tony Award and two Grammys, the legendary Audra McDonald comes to dazzle Sydney with favourite Broadway show tunes. Classically trained at the Juilliard School, she has acted on stage and in film and television, danced, and sung opera and Broadway with top orchestras across the United States, from New York to LA. With charm and power to burn, Audra McDonald is definitely a 2015 highlight. Book early! “One of Ms McDonald’s greatest gifts is to find the story inside the song and deliver it with immediacy and clarity... a defining voice of our time.” STEPHEN HOLDEN, THE NEW YORK TIMES

Ross Edwards was inspired by the idea that, upon seeing white men for the first time, the Aborigines thought they were observing the ghosts of their ancestors. The result is the ritualistic rhythms and soul-healing chants of White Ghost Dancing. HOW DOES A SUBSCRIPTION WORK? Each year between February and December the SSO presents a season of about 100 concerts divided into 11 subscription series. A series is a package of pre-selected concerts that forms an exciting journey through the season. Alternatively, you may prefer to hand-pick a selection from the concerts on offer to create your own flexible package. When you subscribe you choose one (or more!) of these series, or a flexible Connoisseur’s or Signature Selection.
WHAT IF I’D LIKE TO HEAR A CONCERT THAT’S NOT IN MY SERIES? You have several options for supplementing your series packages with single tickets or even substituting concerts from a different series. • Single tickets are available to subscribers from Wednesday 26 November 2014 – 12 days ahead of their release to the general public. • Or you can purchase tickets for special events now. Subscribers receive a 10% discount on most additional performances. • If you can’t attend a performance in your series, or would simply prefer to enjoy a different concert, it’s easy to exchange your tickets to another performance, from Wednesday 26 November 2014.
You choose the series, package, and time and day of the week that suits you best.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE Support your SSO
The SSO’s TunED Up program Teachers have a hands-on experience at TunEd Up!
SCHOOL EDUCATION How can we expect teachers to impart a love of music to their students if they lack the skills and confidence to teach it? Music is mandatory in NSW primary schools, but in more than 80 per cent of public schools, music is not taught because teachers lack the training. Our TunED Up program supports NSW primary school teachers and helps them develop the musical skills they need.
has had a significant impact The first program of its kind in Australia, TunED Up is a week-long, intensive music training program for classroom teachers. The inaugural program was held on the campus of Sydney University in January 2014 with 30 teachers from throughout NSW, with unanimously positive feedback. Your tax-deductible gift will allow us to sustain and expand TunED Up in 2015 and ensure that a love of music and the creativity that music inspires is part of every child’s education.
on my teaching practices and confidence to teach music. Great things are happening within our school’s music program as a response to completing the TunED Up course. KAREN RANTISSI EMPIRE VALE PRIMARY SCHOOL
EMERGING ARTISTS The SSO Fellowship program is regarded as one of the world’s leading musician training programs. More than 65 per cent of its alumni occupy positions in professional orchestras around the world, including eight in the SSO. For 2015 we have significantly expanded the program, offering up to 17 young musicians a Fellowship place. During a 12-month apprenticeship, each Fellow receives a scholarship and is provided with invaluable professional opportunities. These include working with our Chief Conductor David Robertson, rehearsing and performing with the orchestra, private lessons with SSO musicians, and masterclasses with our visiting guest artists. This intensive mentoring and training significantly increases a Fellow’s likelihood of attaining a permanent position in a professional orchestra.
SSO cellist Christopher Pidcock and 2014 Fellow James sang-oh Yoo compare notes.
Help us support our emerging artists and the future of Australian musicmaking by making a tax deductible gift.
