Mount Maunganui Intermediate is a place where young minds grow and individual passions are discovered. Our students develop a sense of their true worth and forge new relationships with their peers, whanau, teachers and their community. Our school is inclusive and nurturing, as emerging adolescents are encouraged to try new things, make mistakes and discover their talents.

“I have made excellent progress in maths, especially in the ability to use a range of strategies that make sense to me. I have a positive attitude now and I believe that I can do maths. I know that the more I practice and challenge myself, the more my brain will grow.” Jazmin Hunter

Class Programme You will be carefully placed in mixed ability classes with a caring teacher, who will best meet your learning needs.

Accelerate Programme This is a programme that is aimed at challenging and extending gifted and talented learners. Are you working well above National Standards? To be selected for this class you will need to be working at Level 4/5 in the NZ Curriculum already. (That is Year 6 students who are working at a Year 8 and Year 9 level). You need to be nominated by your parent and teacher. You will sit pre-entry assessments to be selected.

Learning Pathways Class Programme Accelerate Programme Bilingual Programme Special Needs Programmes

Bilingual Programme Manaakitanga is a core value in which we live and learn by. Our bilingual unit offers our students a place to belong and excel. Our programme is designed to extend our tamariki in their reading, writing and mathematics whilst deepening their knowledge and skill in Te Reo Mãori me ona tikanga. You do not need to have been a part of a bilingual class in the past to be a part of this kaupapa at Te Kura Takawaenga o Mauao. To join our class you simply need to have a passion to learn Te Reo Mãori, and a commitment to the kaupapa of the class.

What’s best for you as a learner? Special Needs Programmes Do you have special learning needs? Do you need some extra help to support you in your learning or behaviour? Many students choose to come to MMI because we work hard to provide a calm, inclusive and learning-focused school environment. What are some of the things that will help your learning? - Accelerated Learning in Mathematics - Accelerated Learning in Literacy - English Language Learning for speakers of other languages - Positive Behaviour for Learning - Programmes and support for students with learning and/or behaviour difficulties - Restorative Practices - Tutor Reading - Special Needs Coordinator - Strong working partnerships with support agencies - Maths Specialist Teacher

“At MMI we learn through an integrated curriculum, which means we try to break the barrier between subjects and merge curriculum areas together to answer our inquiry questions. Last term we learnt about relationships with the environment. We merged subjects together by using all subjects and physical education to get a deeper understanding of our inquiry. For example, we created posters, action plans, static images, as well as a statistical investigation, written explanation and verbal presentation about our environmental issue. By doing an inquiry presentation you improve your skills in all areas of learning.” Ferne Reid

Literacy and Numeracy You will be taught instructional reading, writing and mathematics in groups. This is a priority in our classrooms. We expect all students to make at least one year’s progress per school year in these areas. Frequently students make far greater progress than that.

Curriculum Opportunities Literacy and Numeracy Goal Setting Integrated Curriculum Academic Kiwi Can Programme

Academic Opportunities - Bay Maths - Future Problem Solving - ICAS Examinations - Life Education Trust - Literature Quiz - Otago Problem Solving - Primary Research Project - Science Fair - Speech - Technology Challenge - Technology Fair - Young Innovator Awards - Blues

What do you need to learn? Integrated Curriculum Just like at primary school, teaching and learning is based upon the New Zealand Curriculum. Inquiry units or integrated units of work are collaboratively planned by teachers, with an emphasis on the key competencies and what you need to learn. We plan the big learning with input from students and the learning is designed to meet needs of emerging adolescents.

Kiwi Can Programme This programme teaches you essential life skills and values such as resilience, respect, integrity and manners. All classes attend a Kiwi Can lesson once a week. Specially trained Kiwi Can Leaders work in pairs, delivering the high energy, interactive and most importantly, fun lessons and being awesome role models to look up to.

“I believe important leadership qualities include being a good role model, being trustworthy and reliable and hopefully being the sort of person that others look up to. There are many ways to be a student leader at Mount Maunganui Intermediate. Whether you are a student councillor, house captain, sport or academic team leader or in the position of Head Boy or Head Girl - these should all be considered a great honour and an opportunity to make a difference. Good luck for your next year!” Holly Sheaff Head Girl

Student Leadership We believe that emerging adolescents are very capable of taking an active leadership role in our school. Would you like to be on our Student Council? Student councillors run class meetings, collect student voice about learning, student well being and curriculum. Your Student Council will work with you to complete community projects and tasks to improve our school. There are also a number of other leadership opportunities on offer.

“MMI provided me with many sporting opportunities, such as Totara Springs Sports Camp, NZCT AIMS Games and the Future Champions Program. I have developed many friendships participating in school and elite sports, many from MMI and other schools. Sports have taught me how to be an effective leader and the importance of a positive attitude. It has kept me healthy and active and has given me a focus, a desire to succeed at a high level and to play to the best of my ability.” Rylee Godbold

“Finding your jam at MMI will be easy. I know from experience. Dance, drama, artwork and other creative activities. My jam is Trash to Fash. Having something old and repurposing it is my creative spark. My advice to you is to think outside the square and to be creative.” Hope Gibbard

“In each class there are two organised and committed ICT ‘Techies’, who carry out this task daily. Being an ICT technician is a challenging task as we need to keep all the devices well maintained, make sure they’re charged and prepared for the following day. There are always problems or something that needs to be fixed, cleaned or put away. Being an ICT Techie provides you with opportunities such as helping out with the technology at assembly and setting up all the new devices or TV’s around the school.” Kaden Adlington

“Ngatuhoa Lodge was quiet and peaceful, and felt like home. It was warm with the open fire. Kayaking was fabulous and easy going down the muddy slide. Wahoo, the swimming hole, tarzan swing and the freezing cold water. Thank goodness my buddy lent me his steamer wetsuit.” Melie Fauhiva

“I have really enjoyed my time at this school because it is a wonderful place to learn. There are so many opportunities for students, and the teachers and students are all very friendly. I am treated just the same as everyone else. I have made lots of friends and will miss them when I return to Korea at the end of this year. I think my family made a good decision for us to come to Mount Maunganui as a place for my brother and I to study because it is a friendly, safe, small town close to Tauranga with a good climate and great schools. I will always remember the good times I have had here.” Jina Choi

Would you like to come to our school? Do you like to make friends with kiwi kids? Would you like to learn English in vibrant, student focused learning environments? “My name is Jack Brennan, I came to this school in Year 8 and it was very challenging. I didn’t even know anyone. My dyslexia did not help my classwork but it was a great environment with really nice people. If you fall, the whole school is there to help you. No one puts other people down. I didn’t ever get into school sports teams before, but this year I’m representing my school in the AIMS Games with a lot of support from my classmates. The school has done a great job of recognising the big improvements in learning I have made this year.” Jack Brennan

Learning Conferences You will be supported to lead your own learning conference twice a year. In these three way conferences you will share and discuss your learning, achievement and learning goals.

Specialist Programme You will also receive reports written by specialist teachers as students complete each cycle. The cycles include Digital Technology, Dance Drama, Food Technology, Hard Materials, Electronics, Music, and Visual Art. Specialist teachers are available during learning conferences for you to discuss your learning and how you have coped in the specialist classroom and subject in preparation for your secondary schooling.

How will we work together?

Home School Partnerships

Home School Partnerships  Learning Conferences Specialist Programme Home School Partnerships Parent Support Group  Coastal Values

It is really important that there is open communication between you, your teacher and your home. We will contact parents and caregivers when a need arises to discuss concerns and positives about your learning, behaviour and well-being. Communication about your welfare and progress is encouraged at all times. Parent’s first contact should be to the class teacher.

Parent Support Group Would someone in your family or whanau be able to help? We have an active parent support group who meets once a term to plan events, fundraising and community working bees.

Coastal Values We have three values: Respect - Whakaute, Pride Whakahii and Learner - Akonga. Mount Maunganui Intermediate is a PB4L school. Positive Behaviour for Learning is where we work with you to develop - positive and respectful relationships - a caring culture where students and staff feel valued and the whole school community feels safe - consistent expectations for your learning and behaviour across all settings and by all staff We teach you behaviours instead of “expecting” that you just know what to do. We do this to maximise your time spent on student learning.

“Being in a modern classroom feels as if the four connected classroom blocks are a big whanau, family. The newness of the buildings makes it smell clean and, as a result, we put in a bit more effort to keep it that way. Organisation is a lot easier with the compartments for storage and using technology has never been easier for our teacher. It is much easier to use the TV instead of the bulky projector that never sat straight. The classrooms have soundproof walls and windows, so even though there is a classroom right next to us, we can not hear them, and we are focused and on task.” Jayrene Penwarden

Is your current classroom a warm and welcoming space? Your classroom is where you spend most of your day. So it is important the place that you spend most of your day is a flexible and modern learning environment.

“I have to admit, on the first day of MMI I was so nervous. But, as soon as I got called into the hall I felt welcome. The school is very inclusive. On the first day we learned everyone’s names and we got to find our way around the school. My teacher is young and has new ways of doing things, which I like. I feel part of this school and I like how it’s a student voice school.” Neve Ganley
