SALERNO AND ITS HISTORY

In the middle age the city of Salerno hosted the most ancient medical school in Europe.

Around the year 1000, the principality of Salerno was extended to large part of Southern Italy.

Salerno is one of the most important cities in Europe for great contemporary architecture, with many operas designed by internationally recognized architects. The city has a very active nightlife, many jazz musicians, and one of the best lyrical programming in Italy.

INCOMING STUDENTS’ INTEGRATION PROCESS The integration process is carried out by a student’s association composed of former international mobility students. They assist incoming students to: find accommodation in private rented rooms; solve didactics issues; apply for Visa procedures. They also organise linguistic exchanges,

ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES The University of Salerno organizes Italian language courses (L2) for incoming students. The courses will last

50 hours for a total of 5 credits. From the academic year 2014/2015 the University has planned, in addition to free courses also courses for a

fee. Students are allowed to enroll to only one course free of charge. Whoever wants to deepen the knowledge of the language

HIGHER EDUCATION STRUCTURE IN ITALY

Three study cycles

1st cycle: Bachelor’s degree (Laurea) three years -180 credits; 2nd cycle: Master degrees (Laurea Magistrale) two years - 120 credits; «one cycle» master degrees whose lenght is five years 300 ECTS, apart from medicine that lasts six years 360 ECTS; 3rd cycle: PhD courses lasting three years.

Courses are organized in two semesters: 1st semester: starts in September/October ends in December/January Examination period: January/February/March

ASSESSMENT AND GRADING SYSTEM Exams may be taken at the end of each course, in

the established period, through a written or oral test, or both. The results of the exams passed are given with a mark based on the national system (in Italy marks are out of 30, with 18 as the pass mark).
