Where the Individual Excels

Our History

From its inception when the leadership of Temple Emanuel Woollahra recognised the need for a new Jewish Dayschool in Sydney and with the cooperation and support of other committed members of the Jewish communityeveryone at Emanuel feels valued here. This atmosphere of mutual respect helps our children to flourish. In 1983 Emanuel School was conceived with the support of generous members of the Jewish community. Opening in 1984 with 53 students from Kindergarten (Year K) to Year 6, the School moved to its present site in Randwick in 1985 and was officially opened in 1986 by The Right Hon. R.J. Hawke M.P. The Kornmehl Centre Emanuel Pre-school was opened in 1999. Today Emanuel School is a premier educational institution in Australia. Strong emphasis on community spirit, leadership and contribution permeates the School with graduates of Emanuel School proudly taking their place in the Jewish community and Australian society.

Emanuel School 1

Emanuel School is unique

Emanuel School is an independent, coeducational Jewish day school catering for students from Pre-school to Year 12. Set in beautiful surroundings in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Emanuel combines the benefits of being small and intimate with the opportunities and facilities that are offered at much larger schools. We offer a diversity of subjects, top quality facilities and superb educators to provide students with solid foundations for academic excellence and personal achievement. We welcome students from all streams of Judaism and strive to create an environment both in harmony with the Jewish community and Australian society, where genuine acceptance and understanding can develop. A small number of non-Jewish students also attend Emanuel as their school of choice.

Where the Individual Excels With small class numbers and a first rate teaching staff, individual talents and interests thrive so every student has an opportunity to excel. Our Gifted and Talented Programmes and Opportunity Classes are outstanding. Our Learning Centre delivers exceptional support and extension for students whose learning styles benefit from individual attention. We encourage every child at Emanuel to strive to reach his or her potential. Emanuel is not just about Higher School Certificate (HSC) results, although we produce outstanding academic outcomes. We place an emphasis not just on the intellectual and cultural but also on the emotional and physical well-being of each student.

The Kornmehl Centre Emanuel Pre-school Our Philosophy The Kornmehl Centre Emanuel Preschool is a community-based Jewish pre-school located in the campus of Emanuel School. The Centre operates daily for children aged 3 to 5 years throughout the school term. Classes are divided into age groups. Our purpose is to educate and encourage the developing young child in the important formative years before school.

A child-centred, total learning experience in a nurturing, educational environment.

The Environment Our Pre-school has been purposebuilt with such features as a dropped kitchen and child-high windows. It is as familiar and welcoming as each child’s own home and offers abundant resources, such as iMac computers. The outdoor environment also offers special places inviting play, exploration, discovery and learning.

A hundred ways of marvelling, dreaming, thinking, seeing. The Kornmehl Centre is rich and dynamic; it is child-centred and collaborative. We have developed a culture of reflection, questioning and extension in our thinking about the importance of young children enjoying a long, happy and challenging early childhood. Much of our thinking has been influenced by the research of educators from Reggio Emilia, in Italy, who believe it possible to join education, culture and quality. Emphasis is placed on social relationships and communication as the keys to acquiring knowledge and a sense of belonging to a wider, collaborative community.

Our Cultural Heritage

The Centre supports, celebrates and reflects cultural diversity and heritage by providing a rich learning experience that values family, history, traditions and cultures. All Jewish festivals are shared and celebrated and a strong Jewish identity is promoted and experienced. A love for Judaism and Hebrew is fostered through story, song, dance, art and crafts.

School Readiness Preparation for school includes visits to Emanuel classrooms and individual assessment of skill levels. This ensures the children are ready for Kindergarten.

Emanuel School 4

Our Infants and Primary Departments

We give our children more than an education – we give them a wonderful start in life. Emanuel offers the resources and results of a bigger school with the individual attention, flexibility and community spirit that a smaller, family school can provide.

Our children are encouraged to grow, reflect and experience independent learning. Consequently, they are able to face future challenges, develop social skills, build on their strengths and accept their limitations without fear of failure or loss of self-esteem.

The curriculum for Kindergarten to Year 6 is complemented by Jewish and Hebrew Studies. Our students have specialist teachers in Jewish Studies, Hebrew, Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education and Drama so individual potential can be nurtured. Emanuel has a highly developed Gifted Education programme, an Opportunity Class and extension and ability grouping in Mathematics and Hebrew.

Extension programmes, provided by dedicated staff with Gifted and Talented qualifications, are offered from Kindergarten onwards. Academic support and English as a Second Language programmes are delivered through specialist staff in our Learning Centre.

Jewish Education is integral to the life of all students and includes a specially developed and integrated Hebrew programme and a syllabus immersed in Jewish teaching, a love of the Jewish festivals and a deepening awareness of the importance of tradition, community and of Israel.

Information technology is integrated into the curriculum through two mobile banks of laptops and computers in each classroom. Students have access to High School facilities such as science laboratories.

From Kindergarten to Year 6

Jewish Education is integral to the life of all students

Kindergarten to Year 6 students enjoy an extensive sports programme, an extra curricular programme, camps and many leadership opportunities. Our outstanding Music Programme includes a compulsory Instrumental Programme for every student from Year 3 to Year 8 – with students electing to continue after Year 8.

Emanuel School 6

Emanuel is committed to academic excellence and teaching young people how to think for themselves, to question, to debate and explore their own boundaries. Emanuel offers a wide range of subject choices.

Our Secondary School From Year 7 to Year 12

The Year 7 to Year 12 curriculum provides a balance in subject selection together with academic challenge. In Year 7, the students gain a taste of all the possible areas of academic endeavour through a common curriculum. From Year 8, students are introduced to more options so that students play an increasingly independent role in the choice of the subjects they wish to study.

From Year 9, the core subjects – English, Mathematics, Science, Geography and History (with Australian Citizenship and Civics), Personal Development Health and Physical Education – are enriched with a range of electives including: French, Drama, Visual Arts, Computing courses, Commerce, Music and Hebrew. Students are readily able to take advantage of the many language courses available through The Open High School, conveniently situated just one block from Emanuel School.

However, it is in Year 11 and Year 12 that students come to appreciate the wide range of subjects and courses available. Emanuel is able to offer the range of courses that one would normally expect only of a very large school.

Our Jewish Life

Inclusion and Diversity

Our families are drawn from the spectrum of Jewish belief and practices, creating a unique Jewish environment that fosters mutual understanding. We welcome students and staff of many races and religions and strive to create an environment in which genuine acceptance and understanding can develop.

Students from a wide spectrum of religious practice thrive side-by-side at Emanuel School. They attend and study for their Bnei Mitzvah at a range of Orthodox, Conservative and Progressive synagogues throughout Sydney. The School is kosher and observes the standard Jewish calendar. Emanuel School’s curriculum caters for and promotes all streams of Judaism.

Emanuel School 9

Our Jewish Studies programme seeks to develop an understanding and love of Jewish values, tradition and practice. We support the principles of Social Action (Tikkum Olam), Religious Pluralism, Egalitarianism, Acceptance of Diversity, and a Commitment to the State of Israel. Our celebrations and commemorations of Jewish Life, our daily prayers together with our commitment to Project Heritage, Jewish youth movements, and Jewish communal organisations touch many aspects of student life at the School.

As the language of the Jewish people, Hebrew is an essential factor in shaping a child’s Jewish identity. Consequently, Hebrew is a central component and is a compulsory subject until the end of Year 7.

Emanuel School 10

Cutting-edge technology

Emanuel School is at the leading edge of technology with a comprehensive laptop programme, wireless access and a strong commitment to remaining at the forefront.

The computer is as much a part of the learning process as the pen. Specialist IT teachers interact with students in the general classrooms and in special IT areas.

Current IT hardware, network systems and IT teaching strategies develop as quickly as technology itself. Emanuel has a commitment to updating its hardware and network. The aim is to incorporate IT into the general learning environment in meaningful ways. Emanuel School looks ahead to capabilities in the future, constantly evaluates technologies on offer and plans IT spending in order to give Emanuel’s students an IT advantage.

Emanuel School 11

The Creative Arts

Emanuel has a compulsory Instrumental Programme from Year 3 to Year 8. Students are provided with a wind, percussion or string instrument and have weekly lessons with tutors in small groups. A strong vocal programme is developing too. Students have the option of joining one of the many Bands or String Ensembles offered at School and participate in annual music events such as the Music Camp, Twilight Concerts, Jazz Nights, The Night of Instrumental Music and so on.

Drama and Art also form part of the core curriculum, with specialist teachers for the Primary and High School. Both sections host a dramatic production every year. Music, Drama and Art are compulsory subjects until the end of Year 8 and then become electives. Co and extra curricular programmes and clubs These are strong at Emanuel and foster a sense of community and team spirit. They include Student Representative Councils (SRC) in our Primary and High Schools as well as chess, debating, mock trial competition, Maths Olympiads, Charity Clubs, The Duke of Edinburgh Awards, the Israeli Club, Theatre Sports and Tournament of Minds to name a few.

Emanuel School 12

Our Sporting Life

Our sports programme ensures that students from Pre-school develop gross motor skills and team spirit. Inter-school sport is compulsory from Year 4 to Year 7. Most students continue well beyond that. Inter-house competitions start from Year 3. Our Year 3 to Year 6 programme begins with basic games and activities, introducing movement skills using a range of sports equipment. Students attend swimming lessons during the year.

We value participation, fun and sportsmanship.

The Physical Education Programme places a high priority on developing fitness and gross motor skills through traditional sports such as basketball, netball, soccer and softball in the Primary School; and alternatives such as life saving, orienteering, surfing, beach volleyball and noncontact kick boxing in the High School.

Our High School cricket and girls’ touch football teams are particularly strong. The Primary School also offers before and after school opportunities in gymnastics, swimming, basketball, volleyball and tennis. Our students compete in inter-school sport and enjoy both athletics and swimming carnivals. During the year there are sports carnivals in which students compete for their Houses in activities such as swimming, cross country and athletics.

Students with special abilities have a pathway to the highest levels of sporting representation, including local associations, Combined Independent Schools, State and National representation.

MIND – SPIRIT – BEING The School motto “Mind Spirit Being” encapsulates the unique qualities of Emanuel School where we emphasise opening the mind, awakening the spirit and engaging the whole being. Our children are given the opportunity to be happy, fulfilled and challenged where their Judaism is a living, vibrant part of their lives.
