welcome Summer 2014/5774
Dear Friends,
It is not unusual for us to “kvell” each time we get ready to go to press with our Fall/Winter Program Guide.
The finishing touches to the Guide is occurring in the midst of our most intense programmatic time of the year – the operation of our 8 week Camp Sol Taplin, which, by the time the camp season concludes, will have had heard the voices and footsteps of more than 1,000 campers maximizing the use of our facilities, under the “watchful eye” of more than 250 staff. This is just the “icing on the cake” for us, because there remains a “carryover” to the excitement of many year-end culminating events and activities (that showcases the scope of program and service we provide), including the annual sports recognition night - the Gelvan Awards; Hebraica’s Maccabi Tzair End of the Year Party and School of Madrichim graduation; the J’s Cultural Arts Theatre’s J-CATemy Awards ceremony; 3 inspiring and spirited shows comprising our Festival Yachad Israeli Dance Festival; 2 Alan & Diane Lieberman Children's Cultural Arts Series presentations with 950 per show in attendance; a piano recital by students of our music program; the graduation ceremony of the PreK students enrolled in our Early Childhood Development Center; an end of the semester show performed by children/tweens/teens enrolled in our special needs drama program; and our Senior Celebration. From this sampling, we catch a glimpse of how extensive our program is, see how we positively impact upon the lives of so many individuals, and witness the MAR-JCC as a multi-generational social service agency striving to meet the diverse needs of the North Miami-Dade and surrounding community.
Contributing to this “kvelling” is turning the pages of this Program Guide (which is only a beginning of what our wonderful staff will be offering during the months ahead), and seeing the reason why the MAR-JCC is considered one of the most active and vibrant Jewish Community Centers in the United States. It is our hope that you will carefully review this Guide and avail yourselves of the outstanding programs, classes, activities, and services that are being offered while watching for new offerings that are being developed by our creative program staff. Remember, if you are 2 months old or 102 years old (and somewhere in between), there is something for you at the MAR-JCC.
The year ahead will be filled with excitement and challenges. On the horizon is the construction of our new George Feldenkreis, Fanny Hanono Cultural Arts and Education Center. The permitting process continues and we invite you to be a part of this Capital Campaign and discuss with us naming opportunities that remain available in this 42,000+ square foot complex. At the same time, we are mindful of the financial constraints before us while sensitive to the need to maintain and upgrade our existing facilities that are extensively utilized day-in and day-out.
A strength of our MAR-JCC is a partnership between staff and volunteers. We encourage you to join with us, not only as a program participant, but as member of one our many program and administrative committees. Do not hesitate to reach-out to either of us to learn how you may get involved in working with us to make the MAR-JCC the center of your life and that of North Miami-Dade Jewish community.
We want to take the opportunity to extend our most sincere thanks to Ariel Bentata, who this past June completed his three year term of office as Chairman of the Board. Ariel demonstrated the qualities and characteristics of a great leader and was (and continues to be) instrumental in guiding the MAR-JCC in its capital expansion, governance, and overall strategic planning. We are most grateful that Ariel will continue to play an active role in helping to guide the growth of our MAR-JCC, in his capacity as Immediate Past Chair and Chair of the Advisory Board.
As we embark upon a new program year and relatively soon will be ushering in the year 5775, we extend only our warmest wishes to you and your family for a “Shana Tova U’Metukah” – a New Year filled with good health, happiness, prosperity, and shalom. Looking forward to your participation and involvement. Sincerely,
Paul Kruss Chairman of the Board
Gary J. Bomzer, MSW President & CEO

YOU can make an IMPACT on so many lives… today and tomorrow! Your donation makes all the difference
The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is a non-profit organization with daily operations funded by membership dues, registration fees, state, county, and foundation grants, as well as from support by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, the United Way of Miami-Dade, and the Children’s Trust. Although those funds contribute to sustaining the basic functions of the MAR-JCC, we rely upon the generosity of members, friends, businesses, and foundations to provide additional funding for scholarships, programming, campus improvements, and overall enhancements and progress. That is where you come in! Your gift to the MAR-JCC Annual Appeal, Capital Campaign, and Create a Jewish Legacy/Endowment Campaign, provides additional funds necessary to ensure we can operate at an optimum level and are able to grow and change for years to come. Your contribution makes an incredible IMPACT.

serving the needs of the community
Your philanthropic needs are our main concern
We understand that as a donor you are unique, as are your interests and passions. At the MAR-JCC, our goal is to get to know you and to understand your philanthropic needs. In this way, we can customize your donor experience and assist you in reaching your personal philanthropic goals. The MAR-JCC’s three main fundraising initiatives are listed below, along with ways you can support each of these efforts. To explore any of these opportunities please contact Elizabeth Mitrani, Development Director, at 305932-4200, Extension 114.

Annual Appeal - Each year, as a result of gifts to the Annual Appeal, the MAR-JCC is able to provide
2014
programming to children with special needs, teens and young adults; offer scholarships for Early Childhood Education, after school programs and, in turn, summer camp; provide senior adults with wellness and social activities, and so much more. Whether through individual or corporate giving, unrestricted donations to the Annual Appeal are all-purpose gifts we can use wherever they will have the most impact, and give us the flexibility to take on new opportunities, strengthen ongoing programs, and meet unexpected financial needs.
Capital Campaign - When you give to the Culture–Arts–Fitness–Gymnastics Capital Campaign you are
investing in the growth of the MAR-JCC and in-turn, our ability to provide programs and services to our members and the community. The success of this campaign will result in the brand new George Feldenkreis Cultural Arts & Education Center, featuring the Alan and Diane Lieberman Theater, a “Rikudim” Israeli dance center, both music and art centers along with new rooms for group fitness. This phase of growth will also generate the space for an improved and expanded fitness center, a gymnastics studio, and additional classrooms. Naming opportunities are available and an incredible way to leave a family legacy. However, there are unique ways for every donor, at every giving level, to get involved. Co-chairs: Fanny Hanono & David Waxman
Create a Jewish Legacy - Endowment Campaign - We are growing our Presidents’ Fund for the Future Endowment* in order to secure the future of the MAR-JCC. Gifts to the endowment are deposited, in perpetuity, and only a portion of the annual interest earned on this account is used. This means your gift will continue to be impactful FOREVER! Whether you want to provide support with an immediate contribution, or want to design a plan through Create a Jewish Legacy, to benefit the Center in the future, there are many options to choose from. Create a Jewish Legacy is a program representing a shared commitment by area synagogues, agencies, and day schools to work together to secure a more vibrant Jewish future. With CJL, you have the ability to create one legacy gift which can benefit all of the Jewish organizations that are important to you. Legacy giving can take the form of a bequest in your will, gift of life insurance, gift of IRA or Pension funds, gift of cash or assets, and a variety of other vehicles. Chair: Steven Kravitz

Other Ways to Support the MAR-JCC Corporate Partnerships
Important to Financial Resource Development is support from the business and professional community. The goal of this Corporate Partnership program is to offer opportunities for corporations to establish a relationship with our leadership, members, participants, and guests while providing much needed financial support to the MAR-JCC. This program enables companies to market to this valuable audience at events, on the MAR-JCC website, on collateral materials, newsletters, and various other vehicles.
Each MAR-JCC event and program has its own unique attendance/demographics, and sponsorship packages are available based on those factors. Depending on your sponsorship level, your logo may be included on banners and/or signage, in newsletters and electronic mailings, on specialty items, and in public relations efforts. Both annual and customized opportunities are available.
Directed Giving
The MAR-JCC has a number of funds, established internally or by our generous donors, which are utilized for a specific department, program, or service. In an ever-changing world, these funds provide a stream of permanent income to safeguard the programs and organizations that matter most to you.
Mitzvah Fund - Bar/Bat Mitzvah children perform a Mitzvah by giving a portion of their gifts to the Mitzvah Fund and by inspiring their parents and grandparents to match their gift. Gifts to The Mitzvah Fund go directly to supports our Special Needs programs and the Scholarship Fund.
The Habimah Society Fund - Knowing that a theatre program cannot be sustained by ticket sales alone, contributions
to the Habimah Society go directly to provide an invaluable source of support to the J’s Cultural Arts Theatre’s year-round program. Gifts of $1,000 or more receive choice seating for all J-CAT productions. Visit us at www.jcctheatre.com to learn how you can become part of the Habimah Society.
Named Endowment Funds* - Named Endowment Funds are established by donors to benefit a MAR-JCC department,
program, or service of particular importance to them. If you are interested in supporting one of these areas, you are free to donate to any of these funds. You can also establish your own endowment fund, where you determine both the name and the fund’s ultimate purpose, with a minimum donation of $25,000. This gift is funded in perpetuity and your contribution is impactful for as long as that program exists.

financial resource development The Name Says it All!
It is simply incredible how the South Florida Jewish Community has come together to support the MAR-JCC’s Culture-Arts-Fitness-Gymnastics Campaign and the construction of the new George Feldenkreis Cultural Arts and Education Center. Through the unmatched generosity of members and non-members alike, we have raised over 85% of the funds needed to complete this state-of-the-art project. However, our donors have not only blessed us with their contributions, but have honored us by giving us use of their names! When a donor allows us to display their name on something, as large as a Dance Center or as small as a brick, it shows the world that they are proud of their contribution to the MAR-JCC and of the MAR-JCC’s contribution to their community. We have shared the names of those donors below and thank them a million times over for their dedication to our mission and our growth.

Although groundbreaking is already planned for this fall, we still have to raise approximately $2 Million dollars to meet our final goal. There is still time to Give Us Your Name! There are opportunities at every giving level, and every gift and every name is important! The list below shows availability as of July 1, 2014. Please contact the Development Department for additional information and to get invested in the Capital Campaign. Please contact Elizabeth Mitrani, at 305-932-4200 x114 or email

Israel programs & resource center
events & shlichim
•Chair: Robert Singer
The Israel Programs and Resource Center, made possible through a partnership of the MARJCC, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and the Jewish Agency for Israel, seeks to strengthen the ties that connect Miami-Dade Jewry with the People and Culture of Israel. Under the full-time direction of a Community Shaliach (Cultural Emissary from the State of Israel), the year’s program menu will include lectures, discussion, Israel Cinema Nights, holiday celebrations, memorial observances, customizing travel programs to Israel for various MAR-JCC program departments, Israel advocacy/educational programs for teens and young adults, and creating People to People relationships with our community’s Partnership City of Yerucham.
Watch for upcoming programming within the next several months that includes an Israel Cinema Night, a Family Sukkot Celebration, and a Rabin Memorial program, as well as an announcement introducing our new Community Shaliach. For further information, contact David Surowitz, Assistant Executive Director, at 305-932-4200, ext. 127.
•”Shin-Shins”
Our connection to Yerucham and the desert communities of the Negev is re-enforced through an initiative of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation’s Israel and Overseas Committee-the presence of two “shin-shins” (Lotem Hacman of Be’ersheva and Merchi Zafran of Yerucham), post high school young adults who carry with them the flavor of Israel and the Zionist spirit of the Negev to classrooms in local Jewish day schools and Hebrew schools, to Jewish organizations and youth groups, and through assisting the Community Shaliach in the development of community programs and activities. Integral to the program is bringing Israel into the home by families providing home hospitality to one of the “shin-shins” (for a minimum of one month). Interested in involving these two very talented and personable young ladies in your organization’s/synagogue’s program or providing home hospitality, contact Shmulik, at 305-932-4200, ext. 128.
•Summer Shlichim
The MAR-JCC summer camp, Camp Sol Taplin, is enriched with the addition of counselor/specialty staff from Israel, who have been specially trained to work in North American summer camp settings. These post-army young adults bring to the camp an ability to work with children in their respective area of specialization and an enthusiasm to bring to North Miami-Dade County a greater awareness of their country and its accomplishments. Part of this “cultural exchange” includes providing home hospitality to these cultural emissaries. If interested, please contact Shmulik Kemper, at 305-932-4200, ext. 128.

Developmental Gymnastics (Children divided into skill appropriate levels) An introduction to a full spectrum of gymnastics through the use of fundamental skills on all apparatus including vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Progression of skills and strength follow the guidelines set by USA Gymnastics. Pre-Team/all ages (by invitation only) - Designed for the advanced gymnast. This is a preparatory program for advancement onto our Travel Team. AAU and USAG competitive teams (by invitation only) - are principally geared to athletes who have been involved in the sport and display the skills necessary to participate in the team experience. There are 10 competitive levels to the team program. Levels 1-5 are compulsory and require the gymnast to perform the same routines that are evaluated based on the USA Gymnastics JR. Olympic compulsory program.
Levels Excel through 10 are optional levels in which the routines are designed and choreographed to the individual athlete’s ability based on specific level requirements. The AAU team follows the same routines as USAG. Competitions at this level are designed to be low pressure with an emphasis on creating a positive experience for each child.

A Bequest in Your Will for the MAR-JCC
Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) is a collaborative endowment program that benefits the Michael-Ann Russell JCC as well as Miami's Jewish agencies, synagogues, day schools and The Foundation of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. It is designed to enable donors to fulfill their philanthropic goals while strengthening Miami's Jewish community, now and in the future. CJL will help sustain vital programs, services and institutions that assist the vulnerable and advance Jewish life in Miami, in Israel and around the world.
A Bequest in your Will of any size can be customized and structured to fit your dreams, lifestyle, family and financial needs. We invite you to read below to find out more:
What It Is: A Charitable Bequest is a gift contained within a will or trust and is one of the easiest ways to leave a legacy. How It Works: You can elect to provide a bequest to any of our Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) partners of a specific dollar amount or a specific asset, such as securities or real estate. The charitable bequest can be in the form of a percentage of a donor's estate or a percentage of the remainder of the estate. Bequests can be made through your will or revocable living trust. You may add a codicil to your will and/or make an amendment to an existing revocable trust. Your estate attorney can best advise you in this regard.
Advantages: •Continue to enjoy your assets during your lifetime •Totally revocable and can be changed at any time •During your lifetime, enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that your Jewish legacy will have a significant impact on the future of Jewish life in Miami •Can establish the legacy in your own name, extend recognition to loved ones, or remain anonymous •Donor recognition and memorial opportunities are available •Is an effective planning tool to reduce the taxable estate •Will be part of the MAR-JCC endowment that is professionally managed by The Foundation of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
What Will Your Legacy Be? Whatever you want your legacy to be, we're here to help you create it. Take the next step. The MAR-JCC, the Foundation of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and our Create a Jewish Legacy partners are ready to work with you, your family and your professional advisors to meet your estate-planning and philanthropic objectives. No matter how or what you choose to give, you will fulfill a mitzvah and support vital programs that bring help and hope to Jewish people in need in Miami, in Israel and worldwide.
