On Sunday August 21, 15 Japanese students and a teacher from Ritsumeijan Uji Junior High School arrived to meet their homestay families from Ferny Grove State School. School payments can be made at The students participate in many daily activities here at the school, as well as enjoying the school office between 8.30 and 11.30am on Tuesday, every day life in Australia with their Homestay families. Wednesday and Thursday ONLY. All payments must be made by due date or student will not be able to participate.

As in previous years, to support their integration with the English language, students will participate in classes from Prep to Year 6 across all Key Learning Areas and specialist lessons. A big thank you to our host families for sharing their hospitality and welcoming our visitors and we wish the students an amazing stay! Page 1

From the Principal Ferny Grove State School has been designated as an enrolment managed school as of the beginning of last week. What does this mean for our school? In essence it provides us with a process to manage enrolment numbers over coming years, particularly in light of the development about to commence in Upper Kedron. This is to ensure that our facility can adequately cater for the families living in our catchment. It also ensures that underutilised facilities at other schools are made best use of. A couple of points need to be explained.     

All current students and their younger siblings are guaranteed enrolment regardless of where they live. Our catchment is designated by Education Queensland and is available for viewing on our website. Future enrolments will need to provide evidence of residence within the catchment as a part of the application for enrolment process. Suitable evidence is outlined on the website. Out of catchment applications will be considered individually by the Principal and either approved or not approved depending on a range of factors such as class sizes, room availability etc. We are limited to an enrolment of 125 Prep students (5 classes) each year unless there are more than this number from within our catchment. All families living inside the catchment are assured of enrolment regardless of number of enrolments The catchment is largely defined by Kedron Brook, Ferny Grove train line and a quite detailed division within the suburb of Keperra either side of Samford Rd.

The first place to check will be our website followed by a call to the office for further clarification. Brett Shackleton, Principal

Early years news Gotchas! (Awarded to students caught doing the right thing!) Mirren C 2C Jared A 3V Bridie Mc 2CC Harry D 2B Expressive Arts As we head towards our massive Expressive Arts week I am often in awe of the amazing talent within our school. I have been fortunate to have been involved with occasionally judging the talent quest heats and at times been left with goose bumps. All students who have auditioned for the talent quest should be extremely proud of themselves. It takes great courage to perform in front of an audience, and it is so wonderful to acknowledge the range of talents that our students have. I am looking forward to the finals on Friday the 9th of September. Congratulations to all who auditioned regardless of the outcome, you are all extremely talented!! Congratulations to all those who have performed so far, the audiences have been highly entertained!

Sexual imagery in popular culture Below is an opportunity to learn some very valuable information that can better prepare you now for problems that will come up as your children get older. There is a barrage of images and videos that children are watching which is very harmful for their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. As parents we need to be aware of how we can best protect and support our children to grow up in a balanced environment and protected from over exposure to harmful adult themes. Please consider taking advantage of this brilliant speaker. How do teenagers and parents navigate sexual imagery in popular culture? Modern day families looking for answers are invited to join the conversation with celebrated Australian social commentator, Melinda Tankard Reist. Friday, 7 October 2016 | 7.00 pm–9.30 pm Calvary Christian College, 559 Beenleigh Redland Bay Road, Carbrook Queensland Session 1: Navigating a sexed-up world (youth only) Session 2: The sexualisation of teenagers and what to do about it (adults only) Bookings essential. Tickets $10 per adult and $5 per child (12–17 years) or $20 per family (2 adults and 2 children). Visit trinity.qld.edu.au to register (Melinda Tankard Reist is an author, speaker, media commentator, blogger and advocate for women and girls. She is best known for her work addressing sexualisation, objectification, harms of pornography, sexual exploitation, trafficking and violence against women). Alexia Hoffman, School Chappy

VISUAL ART COMPETITION Any participants for the Art competition need to make sure they submit their entries by this Friday. They can be brought to the library after school from 3 - 3.30pm until the end of the week, and handed to a committee member. No submissions will be accepted for the competition after this Friday. Upper Kedron Road upgrades Cedar Woods Properties Limited will be providing us with updates for the road works on Upper Kedron Road, including road widening and intersection (including traffic light) upgrades. These improvements will enhance the safety of those roads for both parents as they commute and also our students who walk, bicycle or scooter to school. We will post information on the website as it becomes available. It can be found under the Support and Resources Tab in Documents/General. This weeks updates are here and here.

Footloose Friday Don’t forget our Active School Travel program encourages students to Walk, Cycle, Scoot, use Public Transport or Carpool, each and every Friday. This encourages healthy lifestyles and reduces congestion around our school. Fruit cups are available for breakfast at the Tuckshop for $1 every Footloose Friday.

Also our Combined Orchestra (Senior Band and Senior Strings) will play on Middle Years Assembly next Monday 29 August. Please wear performance uniform. Library news Book Week Book week got off to a great start yesterday. This year’s theme is “Australia the Story Country”. We started out learning about some of our Australian dinosaurs. We talked about the 17m tall Rhoetosaurus and tried to find something that was a similar size and imagine it running across the school oval. We pretended to be archaeologists and dug for dinosaur bones, searched for fossils and fed the dinosaur. Tuesday our friend Timmulbar visited and inspired us with some dreamtime stories. We then began creating our artwork which will be hung in the library. We will continue working on the masterpiece Wednesday at first break. Leane Dunn, Library Coordinator

Sports news The term has started with a bang – record number of participants in Friday Sport with the majority of students able to play their preferred sport - Teachers enthusiastically training students – and a high level of Parent support at games – well done all! Next week sees our inaugural Ferny Grove Olympics, a fitting addendum to the Rio event which many of us have been watching. Program is below and we would love to see lots of parents to support if you can spare the time. There will also be a Canteen service available for parents again in our Hall Canteen, as well as Coffee Cart - when you support these endeavours you support our students as all funds raised go back to the school. A gentle reminder to all that sunsafe hats are not only part of our Ferny Grove uniform but an ESSENTIAL item both during PE lessons and at Friday Sport. As we continue through the term a number of Pre Service Teachers have arrived at our school to continue a strong tradition at Ferny Grove of supporting and nurturing new arrivals to the teaching profession. An aspiring PE Teacher, Steph Goulding, has joined us this week and as you will see from the attached note a welcome face to our school. Finally, congratulations and best of luck to four of our students – Amy Ryan, Macauley Veivers , Pushana Kesselley and Zac Webster who are attending the Regional Track and Field Carnival this week. Gary Kirby, PE Specialist
