The District Governor “There are so many ways to Light Up Rotary.... I hope you will involve your Rotaract and Interact clubs in your service, to bring the new generation of the Rotary family closer to Rotary membership. And I hope you will keep Rotary strong by inviting new members into Rotary – including your own spouses and family.” ~Rotary International President -Gary C. K. Huang

District Governor’s Diary “I covet your support and involvement forthe BIZ-DATING breakfast event on 9th August at a minimal cost of Ksh2500. Your presence will go a long way in making it the most coveted Premier Networking Event of the Year!”

Hello fellow Rotarians, Congratulations to all new Rotary Club Presidents on taking up your new responsibilities. Thrilling installations have been witnessed across District 9212 in the past month. Seeing Rotary clubs light candles and resounding in one voice “Go light your world” has been such a spectacular way of launching in to our Light up Rotary theme.

Having a joint installation in Ethiopia and a top notch one in South Sudan was such a highlight for our district. DGE Teshome, CC Terefe and the entire Leadership of Ethiopia and S.Sudan presided over the 2 events in a fabulous way and did me proud. One month is now gone, and each day counts. We are now in the Membership and Extension month, the sky is the limit! We now roll up our sleeves, make our hands dirty and change the world around us. The time has come and the time is now, to invite your business colleague or fellow professional to your club fellowship. As we challenge ourselves to increase membership by 20% this Rotary year, it is good to note that this is a collective responsibility. You and I must take it

upon ourselves to make Rotary known to someone out there. I believe someone out there is willing to do what we do but lacks a trustworthy platform which we have always provided. Rotary is the most effective, trusted premier networking and philanthropic organization world over. Over 1.2 million professionals and business people shape this purely volunteer led organization. We spend close to 90% of our income on projects in our communities. How will they know unless someone tells them? How can they join us unless they are invited? Inviting your spouse or partner to join a Rotary club is a great idea. Graduating interactors into Rotaractors and Rotaractors into Rotary will give us a promising future. This is the time to spread our roots far and wide because we are better together to Light Up Rotary. My challenge to all Rotary Clubs is to multiply ourselves and start new clubs. We have trained and equipped Past Club Presidents in the past one month and now is the time to employ what we have committed to – Membership and formation of new clubs! I am thrilled to report that a number of clubs are already working on club formations with RC Lavington nearly ready for chartering!

For any Past President who charters a new Rotary club with a minimum of 30 registered charter members fully paid up to RI and District 9212 before 31st December 2014, I will award him/her a full PHF worth $1000. A Club president will qualify for a full PHF award if he/she achieves a net membership increase of 50% from the list of members as at 1st July 2014 -31st March 2015 and achieves presidential challenge. Rotarians are indeed miracle workers. I pledged to match every $500 dollars given to the Rotary Foundation to give a PHF to the first 100 Rotarians. Guess what? 30 slots are already gone in one month! With yet more promises to pay in the beginning of this month- you had better save your slot!!The Award program is open till 30th November 2014. Finally Rotarians, Whatever is good, whatever is noble, whatever is true, whatever is excellent and can light up Rotary, let us commit to it! From Hiral and I, Happy Membership Month!

Rotary Membership Sponsor of a New Member The RI Bylaws clearly outline the procedure for proposing someone for rotary club membership. The “proposer’’ or sponsor is the key person in the growth and advancement of Rotary. Without a sponsor, an individual may never have the opportunity to become a Rotarian. Individuals must be asked to join Rotary; thus it is every member’s responsibility to identify and invite prospective members. The task of the sponsor should not end after submitting a name to the club secretary or membership committee. Although Rotary has not established formal responsibility of sponsors, the following procedure is recommended in many clubs: 1. Invite a prospective member to several meetings before proposing the individual for membership. 2. Accompany the prospective member to one or more orientation meetings. 3. Introduce the new member to other club members each week for the first month. 4. Encourage the new member to become involved in any club service projects underway. 5. Invite the new member to attend meetings of the interact or rotaract clubs sponsored by the club. 6. Provide opportunities for the new member to get involved in international program efforts, such as Rotary Youth Exchange. 7. Invite the new members to accompany the sponsor to neighboring clubs for the first makeup meeting to learn the process and observe the spirit of friendship. 8. Ask the new member and spouse to accompany the sponsor to the clubs social activiies, dinners, or other special events.

Rotary District 9212

9. Urge the new member and spouse to attend the district conference with the sponsor. 10. Serve as a mentor to ensure that the new member becomes an active Rotarian. When a new member becomes involved and connected, both the club and the new member become stronger. Types of Membership in Rotary There are two types of Rotary club membership: active and honorary. An active member is one who has been elected to membership under a business or professional classification and enjoys all the obligations, responsibilities, and privileges of membership as provided in the RI Constitution and Bylaws. Active members may hold office in their clubs and serve RI at District and international levels. They are expected to meet attendance requirements, pay dues, and bring new members into Rotary. Honorary Membership may be offered to people who have distinguished themselves as meritorious service in furtherance of Rotary ideals. An honorary member is elected for one year only, and continuing membership is renewed yearly. Honorary members cannot hold an office and are exempt from attendance requirements and club dues. Fellow Rotarians, Welcome to the August Membership edition of the DG’s E-Magazine. July has been an amazing Rotary month. How many candles have we lit up to symbolise “LIGHT UP ROTARY”? How well do we know the “Carry your Candle” song? The song is ever in my head when I receive each installation photo on whatsapp. My children are also hooked to the song and love the lighting of the candles. All credit to our DG and his team for such a fantastic take on the 2014-2015 Rotary theme. I am particularly thrilled by the informational and Club project articles that you will meet in your read this month. July’s highlight was the amount of partnerships that happened to Light up Rotary. We hope you will engage with other clubs and Rotarians in the month ahead. The E-Magazine is at your service. It’s looking for the BEST articles in the district and beyond. Send us what’s making news by 15th of each month and we shall make sure it reaches our readers locally and abroad! As we work with the DG to increase our membership, let’s use this month to attract more members. There is a pool of Rotarians in the making. Just take a minute and think. Your relations, friends, business partners etc, the list is endless. At the DG E-magazine we would like to hear about your membership drives. Send us an article with photo’s of the membership cocktail you did, or any other wonderful way in which your club attracts new members. Let’s share with our fellow Rotarians all methods we have tried and tested. Happy reading and we the DG E-Magazine team are really excited with this edition and looking forward to have the very BEST MEMBERSHIP MONTH!

At the beginning of last Rotary Year, the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) was formed to assist in planning for the 2014-15 Rotary Year. The SPC’s main task is to assist the DGE in formulating plans for Rotary activities in the Rotary Year as well as formalising appointment of Rotarians to undertake the various roles required. A lot of the DGs work is done in the year prior to taking over as Governor. It is always a pleasure to work with Rotarians and we are lucky that our District has a large pool of talent to tap from. Some of the tasks of the team are to develop, manage and coordinate with Country Chairs the DG’s diary, including seminars, trainings and club visits. During the Rotary year we will assist to monitor Clubs’progress vs targets, particularly the Presidential and District Governors targets, membership and Service Project goals and others as outlined in their Planning Guides. In the last few months as a core part of achieving the goals, with support of the seminars and training team under Sundeep Raichura, we have held various trainings as well as assisted in finalising district and country officers’ appointments. All in all we strive to put in place measures to help the DG in achieving the overall district strategy for the year 2014-2015. Rtn. Nick Bore Chair – SPC

Coastal Clubs take on a Partnership Lead against Malaria Rotary club hold Medical Camps with a focus on Malaria Prevention In an effort to Light up Rotary, the Rotary Clubs at the Kenyan Coast have a radical awareness campaign strategy in the coast region with the intention of creating awareness on Malaria prevention and correct use of malaria prescribed drugs after testing. The campaign is also intended to issue mosquito nets especially for expectant mothers and small children. According to world Malaria report - 2013, since 2000, global cases of Malaria have fallen by 42% through combined efforts. The disease claimed an estimated number of 482,000 children under the age of 5 years in 2012. The medical camps project will be carried out in schools and dispensaries. The joint effort will have its focus in health care as well as poverty eradication. Each club is expected to cover at least one school or dispensary. A proposed budget of 5000 dollars is expected to complete the project. Treated mosquito nets, informational materials and volunteers are among the resources required for the project. Each club will raise 500 Dollars and your support or partnership together with our strategic partners and friends will go a long way in realizing our dream of a malaria free Kenyan Coast. Rotary Club of Embu on Education Project 2014-2015 The Rotary Club of Embu with the help of Rotary E-Club of Southwest USA, District 5510 has embarked on a fruitful library equipping project in two local primary schools in celebration of the new Rotary year 2014/15. One hundred and fourteen (114) pieces of story books were distributed in Rianjeru and Kiamukuyu primary schools respectively. The library equipment is meant to encourage the school going children to adopt a reading culture from an early age. The project has thus far benefited over 400 pupils in 8 different local schools. In the course of project implementation, the club saw first hand the plight of rural children who are both mentally and physically challenged as they learn in unconducive environment. The children lack basic needs to equip them with life skills. In one school, the children learn from under a tree and when it is too cold or rainy they move into a mud built classroom. Some schools provide a room for learning, though the rooms lack necessary equipment like suitable desks, visual and audio learning materials. RC Embu’s plan for the year 2014/2015 is to grow the project further to change more lives in Special Needs Education. We are seeking for meaningful partnerships with other Rotary Clubs, The Rotary Foundation, well wishers and friends of Rotary. Rotary Clubs’ Partnerships are a Beam of Light to Malungoni Village The Rotary Club of Diani in partnership with Rotary Clubs of Tauberbischofsheim and Evesham are making it happen at Malungoni Primary school and its environs. Just how partnerships can work wonders in changing lives in the Coastal village of Malungoni. Transformation of the humble school in Kinango District has brought the much awaited freshness to the school learning. Directed by the District Education Office, the need was beyond imagination. A three classroom mad building lying idle in the poor village. A desperate staffroom doubling up as the headmaster’s bedroom and kitchen was unfathomable.A single pit latrine served 180 pupils and 4 teachers at the time. Learning also took place under a tree and a nearby church store. The Rotary Club of Diani in partnership with Rotary Clubs of Tauberbischofsheim (TBB) and Evesham build 1 classroom, donated 60 desks and installed gutters and a water tank for a rain harvesting system between 2010 and 2012. Condition for the support was that the school started planting trees.

Lighting up lives through Water Projects The RC Nairobi East is rocking Kajiado with sustainable water projects saving villagers from kilometers walks and leaving hundreds of school children with much relief. Lack of adequate supply of clean water is one of the most urgent problems to solve according to discussions with community members. Kajiado County is part of the Kenyan dry lands, roughly 100 Kilometers south of Nairobi. Rotary Club of Nairobi East have successfully finished projects including construction of boreholes, rainwater harvesting tanks and construction and repair of water piping in the past 2 years. This was done in partnership with the Rotary Club of New Port -USA and POWER – Pastoralist Organization for Water and Environment Research , a Global Grant of USD 200,000 , a club in Japan, and smaller grants from TRF for rainwater tanks.

The project budget is $50,000 to fund the construction of a rain water harvesting and storage systems for the schools. The local community will be involved in the construction of the ferro - cement tanks and guttering and will be trained in maintenance. The project management will be carried out by the Rotary Club of Nairobi East. The Club is seeking to raise 10% of the required funds thus $45,000 is sought from partners. A positive effect on both children’s health and education is expected with an average of 300 students per school. Between 4,500 and 9,000 people in total who will benefit from improved health and increased time to learn and develop.

The next day, Ben drove up and said, “Sorry, but I have some bad news. The donkey died.” “Well, then, just give me the money back,” said Jean Paul “Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.” Replied Ben “OK, then. Just unload the donkey,” said Jean Paul. “What ya going to do with him?” asked Ben. “I’m going to raffle him off,” said Jean Paul. “You can’t raffle off a dead donkey!” uttered Ben. “Sure can. Watch me. I just won’t tell that he’s dead,” said Jean Paul. A month later Ben met up with the Cajun and asked, “What happened with that dead donkey?” “I raffled him off, I did. I sold 500-hundred tickets at two dollars apiece and made a profit of $898,” said Jean Paul. “Didn’t anyone complain?” inquired Ben. “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back,” said Jean Paul. Thanks to: Brenda Ervin - Las Vegas - Nevada - USA.

District Governor’s Challenge

A key goal in 2014-15 will be to increase the number of clubs and members in our District. The District Governor will be keen to spearhead an increase in the District’s Fund contribution to the foundation and to this end raise a District Governor’s Challenge and award system. An awards committee will form a jury team to come up with a judging system. Past President’s Challenge The DG’s challenge is to award a full Harris (PHF) worth of $1000 to any past president who charters a new rotary club. The awards will be subject to the following terms and conditions:

• The past president submits a completed “New Club Survey” form and sponsor club form duly approved by the sponsor club’s presidents and secretary. • DG Bimal will officially appoint the past president as the special representative in planning and organizing the new club formation. • The club should be chartered before 31st December 2014. • The new Rotary club should have a minium of 30 charter members who have paid their fees to RI and the District and duly registered as Rotarians on the RI website. • The new club should be at a maximum radius of 10km from the sponsor club, to enable effective monitoring and mentoring by the sponsor club.

Club President’s Challenge DG Bimal will award a full Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) to any club president in the year 2014-15 who achieves the following: • Qualifies to receive a presidential citation by March 31st 2015 • Achieves a net membership increase of 50% from the list of members as at 1st July to 31st March 2015. Paul Harris Fellows Challenge For the first 100 Rotarians who contribute $500 to the Rotary Foundation towards a Paul harris Fellow (Annual Fund), DG Bimal will match every $500 enabling such a Rotarian to be awarded a full Paul Harris Fellow (PHF). This can also be used to get a multiple Paul Harris. The award is open 1st July to 30th November 2014.
