PICK UP AND DROP OFF PROCEDURES FOR SUMMER SCHOOL DROP OFF OPTIONS







When dropping your child off at school, you may park on Newcomb Avenue or another side street, and walk your child in through the Westerly Drive entrance. Please note there is 15 minute parking on the side streets near Tenafly High School. If you drop your child off directly in front of the High School, please be aware that you may not park your car, but must drop your child off and immediately drive away from the school once they are released to a staff member. All students who will be entering kindergarten in the 20162017 school year must be directly walked to their first class by their parent or guardian. There are no exceptions to this rule.

All students who are entering kindergarten in the 2016-2017 school year must be picked up directly from their last classroom. These students will not be dismissed unless this occurs. It is advised that parents park and walk to the High School for dismissal. If you choose to park on the side streets at this time, please follow all parking rules posted on the streets. Students who attend the summer recreation program will be escorted there by program staff.

If there is a change in dismissal directions for any student, the summer school office should be contacted at 201-816-4946. In this class ELL students will be learning the conventions of English and practicing from writing a good sentence to a complete essay. Come and explore some of the most mystifying events in history. Students will span through thousands of years of history to learn about the greatest unsolved mysteries. Through the use of primary sources, videos, and photographs students will step into the shoes of an historical detective and try to offer their own answers to some of the world’s most intriguing questions. The course will include topics such as the true discoverer of the Americas, the Shroud of Turin, Rasputin of Russia, the Ice Man, the Pharaohs and the pyramids, the Greek's Trojan horse, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Students will explore the techniques necessary to deliver a captivating, confident and vocally powerful speech. Specific goals of the course include: release each student’s full creative potential, acquire fundamental skills necessary for delivering a speech, be able to speak confidently in front of a class, use the voice to enhance the spoken word, and self-reflection and selfevaluation. The last two days of class will be a celebration of students’ work.

Maria Vojack Smith This enrichment course is designed to give a jump start into the 6th grade math curriculum, including a review of the more difficult content that was introduced during 5th grade. Students will be exposed to a variety of teaching strategies designed to help them develop their skills in fraction and decimal operations, integers, data analysis, geometry, probability, problem solving and the beginning of algebraic concepts. Students will also play math games and solve challenging math mysteries.

Students will learn the fundamentals, rules, basic tactics, and strategies. Chess tournaments will be held and prizes distributed. Intermediate/Advanced Chess: Students will further their tactical knowledge of the game and will participate in challenging exercises and competitive play. This class is for students with knowledge of how the pieces move and of basic game technique. Familiarity with the chess clock and use of algebraic notations for recording moves is a helpful prerequisite. Chess tournaments will be held and prizes distributed.

The STEM summer enrichment courses will focus on hands-on technology-driven activities that will show students how each of the above subjects are vital in their everyday lives. Students will begin to understand each of these subjects through projects that require experimentation, problemsolving, creativity, and imagination. Single period STEM classes for Grades 2-3 include topics such as buildings and structures, manufacturing and 3D printing, coding, robotics, crystal growth and structure, and more! Materials fee: $25 (Max 12)

Single period STEM classes for Grades 3-5 are single-session classes and will include topics such as: the five senses and the brain, sound and light, electricity and magnetism, Newton’s laws, buildings and structures, manufacturing and 3D printing, coding, robotics, video game design, and more! Materials fee: $25 (Max 12) Periods 2 and 3 (Mr. Cook) are back-to-back sessions, and they must BOTH be taken and they cost the same as two classes. The topics to be explored will include: simple machines, how the world works, designing and fabricating with a 3D printer, coding and robotics, electronics and the Arduino microcontroller, generating alternative energy, video gaming environment and building your own game, health and safety wearables, hydroponics, and the future of food. Adventures in Science is a hands-on approach developed to teach children specific scientific skills and to ignite a passion for the world of science. The children will use the artist’s work to inspire artwork of their own. Matisse, Monet, Van Gogh, Warhol, Picasso, and Magritte are just a few of the artists we will be studying. Lisa Bianchi Beaders’ delight! Learn the art of jewelry design and develop a craft that will last long after summer is over. Create jewelry for yourself, family, and friends.
