Payment Reminder (print) – Created to remind students that their tuition payment or payment plan needs to be in place prior to Jan. 13. Students may not be aware of the new policy which drops them from their seat in the class and places a student on the waiting list in the class. Mailings were done in late December and the first week of January.

Have you paid your winter 2016 tuition bill? Did you know that payments or arrangements are due by Jan. 13? Non-payment will result in losing your seat in classes. Jackson College has a new waitlist policy that may impact students who have not paid. Once a class section is filled, students wanting to register for the class will be placed on a waitlist, to be enrolled if a spot opens up.

Why does this matter to me? • If you do not have payment arrangements in place by the payment due date you will be dropped from your courses. • Your seat in the class will then be taken by a student on the waitlist. • You would not be able to re-register for the same course if a student on the waitlist took your seat, and no more seats are available.

MAKE SURE TO HAVE PAYMENT OR ARRANGEMENTS IN PLACE BY JAN. 13 DON’T RISK LOSING YOUR SEAT IN CLASS!

NEWS RELEASES December 16, 2015 Bobby Thompkins to be 2016 King Medal of Service honoree; celebration set for Jan. 16 Jackson College is pleased to announce the 2016 recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Service Award will be Bobby Thompkins, retired administrator for Jackson Public Schools.Bobby-Thompkins Thompkins is a Jackson native and high school and college basketball standout who has dedicated his life to helping youth succeed. A graduate of Jackson Public Schools and member of the Jackson High Hall of Fame, he attended what was Jackson Community College from 1962-64. After JJC, he went to work in industry for about four years, before being recruited to play basketball at Spring Arbor College. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education with majors in physical education and minor in math from Spring Arbor, and a master’s degree in administrative arts from Michigan State University. After college, Thompkins went to work as an administrative intern at Jackson High School. Over his 31-year career with JPS, he served as assistant principal, associate principal and principal at Jackson High, and associate principal and principal at the Middle School at Parkside. “It was rewarding to be able to touch young people’s lives,” he recalls, explaining he did all he could to help keep students in school. “The key for me, it was never about suspension or punishment, it was about correcting behavior. If you correct behavior and you show people you care, their attitude is changed.” After retiring in 2003, Thompkins served on the JPS school board from 2005-2014. Active in the community he has been a member of the NAACP and received a community service award from NAACP. He’s also received awarded from the Jackson Human Relations Commission and a service award from WIBM Radio. He has two sons, Gary and Brian, a daughter, Kimberly, and a grandson. “Jackson College is extremely grateful to have someone of Mr. Bobby Thompkins caliber to win the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King Medal of Service Award,” said Lee Hampton, director of multicultural affairs. “He has touched many, many lives, and has helped many young people in our community reach high levels of success.” When he learned about receiving the King Medal of Service honor, Thompkins had one reaction: “God is good. He was here and he helped others; if I am working to help others, that is my purpose.” n n n n n

December 16, 2015 King Celebration to celebrate the memory of Maya Angelou MLK-Event-PosterThe life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has impacted generations. This January, Jackson College will celebrate King’s legacy and impact with a special tribute to the world renowned poet, actress, and civil rights national icon, Dr. Maya Angelou, who was a dear friend of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. when it welcomes speaker Elliott Jones, grandson of Maya Angelou, to the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The event will be held Saturday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Robert Snyder Dining Commons, Potter Center. Jones has shared words of encouragement and inspiration to many. After the passing of Angelou in 2014, he honored her memory by speaking at both her North Carolina and New York memorials. With Dr. Angelou’s same honesty, grace and charm, he reflected on his grandmother’s life. Jones was born and raised in Oakland, Calif., by parents dedicated to social justice. He always envisioned himself as an advocate for social change. After attending St. John’s University in New York for marketing, Jones moved to Miami, Fla., to pursue a career in community development. Jones impacted the city of Miami by providing residents with more access to community programs, increased volunteerism and facilitated projects in the Liberty City neighborhood like The Sherdavia Jenkins Peace Mural. He served his community by developing programs to protect students and increase programs supporting early childhood education as director of community engagement at the Miami Children’s Initiative. Currently, Jones is working in Miami and devotes his days to instilling entrepreneurial skill sets in the local youth and connecting them with other Changemakers, so the youth have both the tools and support to impact society. He has engaged audiences as a moderator in 2014 on the panel “Activating Empathy: The Foundation of a Changemaker” for the Social Good Summit. He continues to speak nationally on education, activism and leadership. Tickets for the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration are $25 for adults, $20 for students and senior citizens, and may be purchased at the Potter Center Box Office, 517.796.8600. n n n n n
