2015 Xmas Party MMS activities for the year ending 2015 were rounded out by a Xmas Party held on Dec 22. Some seventy members and guests attended, and, together with Rudi’s Tie (see photos), and speeches kept to a minimum, a good time was had by all. A number of members contributed to the major tasks of setting up and clearing most of the gear out of the shed so the function itself could be held in the shed. Many thanks to those who contributed and stayed behind afterwards to clean up and help put some of the gear back in place.

General News 1. Jan 2016 Sausage Sizzle   One of the first activities for 2016 was the Sausage Sizzle fundraiser held on Saturday Jan 30 2016 at Bunnings in Cannington. Despite the weather, a group of hard core MMS Volunteers manned the Sizzle and managed to raise about $1000 from the sale of food and beverage, and the running of a raffle. Many thanks to the chief organizers, Rob Goldfinch, Brett Goodwin, and Arnold Godfrey. Planning for April Quiz night is well underway under the management of John Paisley and Rob Goldfinch. If you are able to assist please see either, John Paisley, Rob Goldfinch, Stephen Finch or Brett Goodwin. 2. Sets for MSC Mikado Musical Production MMS members have begun working on sets for the upcoming Mikado musical being organized by the MSCC. In the photo below Brett Goodwin uses the newly acquired Sliding Compound Mitre Saw to cut MDF Sheeting for the sets, some of which which can be made out in the background. Members interested in assisting with this should see Brett.

Men’s Shed who also managed to score some sheets of MDF that was taking up a lot of space in the main shed. 4. Membership Survey Many thanks to members who participated in the recent survey. Some 28 members responded which I believe makes us well above average regarding the response rate for such surveys amongst similar organizations. The results will be analysed and released after the committee has had a chance to review them and make recommendations. 5. Acquisitions During the summer break; thanks to a lead from Alan Naber, a donation of a large number of MDF sheets (almost 2 tons worth!) was obtained from All Wood In Cannington. The picture below shows approximately half of the MDF sheeting donated. Thanks to members Bill Ransted and Eric Goddard who spent some time cutting some of the sheets to length so they would fit into the container. Some of the sheets were also donated to other men’s sheds.

5. Manning Senior Citizens Centre Lunches The MSC Mikado performances will be on Saturday July 2nd and Monday July 4th at 2pm Venue: Manning Senior Citizens Centre. Tickets: $5.00 for members and $10.00 for nonmembers, and includes afternoon tea. Limited seating includes afternoon tea. All members who have worked towards this production will be mentioned in the program 3. Shed De-cluttering.

A reminder to members that the MSCS offer high quality 3 course lunches every Wednesday and Friday for $12.00, or Soup = $3.00, Main = $5.00, Dessert = $4.00 MMS members can also put in take away requests. If attending please give your name   to Glenn to record on the lunch list, the day prior. The menu will be available after 3.00pm on the day prior.

There has further de-cluttering of the shed and container with the sale and giving away of items no longer required. The old large blue dust extractor that was taking up a lot of space in the container was gratefully received by Belmont

6. Recent Member projects Rob Goldfinch recently completed two fire-safe document storage boxes intended to secure important client documents against fire damage in Robs wife's office (wills, trust deeds, powers of attorney, etc). Made of laminated Fyrcheck and Shaft Panel Gyprock, Rob says, they should give a fire resistance of 1.5 - 2 hours. Rob has yet to come up with a suitable non-destructive testing procedure, says, of course they also double as the “Heaviest eskies in the West”.

Alan Naber and Eric Goddard recently made the bicycle plinths (see photo below) for the Museum of Perth for the “Hidden History of Perth’s Cycling” exhibition, that is running until the end of March. The museum is in Grand Lane in the city centre.

Robert York has been giving the lathes in the shed a solid working over in the last 12 months. Here is an example of a composite bowl made by Rob. The “Our Hidden Cycling History” reopens archives, albums and back sheds to reveal 7 uniquely West Australian stories centred around this wonderful mode of transport – Cycling

Featured Member Brett Goodwin Always good for a joke, or two, or three, when I asked Brett where he came from he replied, “Under a cabbage patch Vic Park, WA”. In fact he claims he was conceived at the drive -in near Vic Park. Brett’s working life has been associated with Oil and Gas Subsea construction and Installation, and Mining Construction and installation. Brett joined MMS about 6 months ago, although Brett has been involved with other Men’s Sheds around Perth. Since then Brett has become a Shed regular, attending most days and is often amongst the last to leave. Brett said he joined for the camaraderie, learn how to do things, and because, “he likes to make stuff”

Just ike the wood show, but without the sprukers.

2. Sober Safety Reminder regarding Angle grinders FEBRUARY 5, 2016 A man has died following a horrifying angle grinder accident at a southeast Queensland workplace. The 59-year-old was working in a maintenance shed at Maleny on Thursday afternoon when it is believed the blade of an angle grinder cut him in the chest. Paramedics rushed to the business on McCarthy Rd just after 12.45pm, transporting the man to Nambour General Hospital with serious chest injuries. He tragically passed away shortly after. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is investigating.

Always enthusiastic, Brett is generally amongst the first of MMS members to pitch in, with shed fund-raisers, like the Bunning’s sausage sizzles, or community projects like the construction of the MSC Mikado Musical Sets (see story earlier on in the newsletter). Brett has also performed many small woodwork tasks for members of the general public who have popped into the shed to have something fixed or attended to. This has helped both the public and the shed through generous donations for Brett’s work. Even though Brett says he is still learning, new members benefit considerably from Brett’s assistance with his knowledge of operating machinery and because

he seems to know where most things are around the shed.

The above photo shows some of Brett’s completed projects. The Radial Arm Saw was donated to the shed last year and Brett built a new top and fence for it so it would cut accurately. The Silver boxes are bulk cling film dispensers for the MSC kitchen. The bread-boards (also shown being held by Brett on the previous page) are shed fundraisers items and can be purchased from the shed for $30. Brett says he in mainly interested in woodwork at the moment but that could change depending on what sort of projects are on the go. Brett’s other main hobby can be seen sometimes strapped to roof racks on his vehicle. It looks like a fairly fancy ski-paddling craft of some kind and Brett tells me he even gets it wet from time to time.

Proofreading is a dying art, wouldn't you say? (Thanks to Freddie Tan)

Challenge your self (With thanks to James Turner) This test does not measure your intelligence, your fluency with words and certainly not your mathematical ability. It will however, give you some gauge of your mental flexibility and creativity. In the 30 years since the test was developed, very few people have been found who could solve more than half of the 24 questions in the first try. Many, however, reported getting answers long after the test had been set aside, particularly at unexpected moments when their minds were relaxed and have reported solving questions over a period of several days. Each question contains the initials of words that will make it correct. Find the missing words: eg. 16 = O in the P Answer: 16 = Ounces in the Pound 1. 2.
