MVC BASKETBALL

JANUARY 16, 2017

On Tap This Week

One of the league’s oldest rivalries continues as Illinois State travels to Bradley on Wednesday (CBS Sports Network). Bradley leads the I-74 series 63-59, but ISU has won five-straight games against Bradley. In other mid-week games, Missouri State will be looking to win for the third-straight time against Indiana State but first time in Terre Haute since 2012; Wichita State will be seeking an eighthstraight win in the series against Evansville; the Panthers will be looking to snap a three-game series win streak by Loyola; and Southern Illinois will be seeking a season series sweep and fifth-straight win against Drake in Des Moines.

In the past 12 seasons, the MVC has had 13 regular-season champions (11 outright plus 1 season with co-champs). Eight of those 13 led the league in conference-game scoring defense during their championship season. Only one team was worse than 5th (Creighton’s co-champion team in 2008-09 finished eighth in league-only scoring defense). 2016-17 Scoring Defense

Illinois State’s 6-0 start matches its second-best all time in MVC play. Its best start in league play was in 1982-83 when the Redbirds won their first nine in the MVC to finish 13-5 and second in the standings. In the past four seasons, a league team has gotten off to 6-0 start four times, and all four teams went on to win the MVC regular-season title.   Missouri State’s Alize Johnson leads the league in rebounding (10.1 caroms per game). The last first-year MVC player to lead the league in rebounding and eclipse 10.0 per game – Lewis Lloyd of Drake in 1979-80 (15.0 rpg).

Hot Hands

Loyola’s team FG percentage (51.1) ranks fourth-best nationally. Only three MVC teams in the past 20 seasons have been .500 or better (.505-Evansville, 1999; .504-Creighton, 2012; .501-Creighton, 2013). Each of those three teams reached the NCAA Tournament in those respective seasons. Loyola’s 1991-92 squad owns the single-season school mark with a .494 figure. In their 13 wins this season, the Ramblers are averaging 79.5 ppg and draining 53.7 percent (379for-706) of its field goal attempts. At 70.8, Loyola’s Aundre Jackson is No. 4. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

The Ratings Game

Here’s where the league’s top rated teams rank among national metrics (ESPN BPI, RPI, KPI, KenPom and Sagarin ratings). Illinois State received a vote in this week’s USA Today Coaches poll, its first vote in that poll since Jan. 12, 2009. The Redbirds’ highest season-ending RPI was 27 (their current RPI rating) in 1998, following ISU’s last NCAA Tourney bid. MVC

It’s a Steal

Illinois State’s Paris Lee is the active NCAA leader for career steals. He’s the 18th MVC player to reach 200 career steals. Jalan West is tied with Lee with 219 career steals, but West has yet to play a game this season (and only played one game in 2015-16). Lee needs four more to pass former Redbird Ron Jones, who holds the ISU career record at 222. Lee is tied for 19th all-time in the MVC. Paris Lee, Illinois State Jalan West, Northwestern State Tahjere McCall, Tennessee State Monte Morris, Iowa State Justin Robinson, Monmouth

Evansville’s Jaylon Brown ranks No. 5 in the NCAA with 120 made free throws. His 142 attempts rank No. 6. Among MVC players, only Mike Rodriguez of Southern Illinois has made 100 or more charity tosses this year. Brown’s average (6.3 free throws made per game) rivals some of the best in the MVC during the past 20 seasons (ranking No. 4 in that span). Thomas Making Strides

Looking for 5 in a Row

After a slow start to the year, junior Donte Thomas has regained the form from last season that landed him on the Missouri Valley Conference Most Improved Team … In starting the last 10 games, Thomas is averaging 6.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, including marks of 12.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in a pair of contests last week … Thomas posted numbers of just 3.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game the team’s first nine games of the season and has led the Braves in boards in eight of the last 10 games after not doing so once in the first nine.

Kennell Picks Up the Pace

Freshman Nate Kennell ranks as one of the team’s revelations during conference season … The rookie averaged 4.3 points per game during the non-conference season and scored 10 points once in 12 games … He is now scoring 10.2 points per game in six MVC contests, hitting double figures on four occasions … Additionally, Kennell ranks first in MVC games with a free-throw percentage of 92.9, second with a 3-point percentage of 63.2 and seventh with a field goal percentage of 54.5.

The Bulldogs return home looking for their fifth-straight home win … the current fourgame home win streak is the longest since 2014-15 … the team last won five-straight home games during the non-conference portion of the 2011-12 season … in the Bulldogs’ home MVC games this season, the team is averaging 92.3 points per game while shooting 49.2 percent and 43.3 percent from the three-point arc … in MVC road games, the team is averaging 64.7 points per game while shooting 39.9 percent and 33.3 percent from the three-point arc … opponents in those road games are averaging 84.0 points per game.

Ore on Torrid Pace

In the last seven games, Ore Arogundade is averaging 13.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 55.2 percent from the field and 50.0 percent (14-of-28) from the three-point arc … he has scored in double-figures in six of those games including a career-high 17 points against Evansville … in the first 11 games of the season, he averaged 3.3 points per game while shooting 29.4 percent and 29.6 percent from the arc.

Double-Figure Scorers

Braves Defense a Key

It all starts with defense for the Braves this season in MVC contests … In the team’s three Valley victories, Bradley is allowing its opponent to shoot just 28.5 percent with a 19.7 percentage from 3-point range … However, it their three defeats, the Braves have allowed their opponent to hit at a 51.2 percent clip and a 46.3 percent mark from beyond the 3-point arc.

In the win over Indiana State, the Bulldogs had five players score in double-figures for the second-straight game … additionally, those 10 total double-figure performances came from eight different players.

Good From Long Range

The Bulldogs sank 11 three-pointers at UNI to mark the secondstraight game and the sixth time this season the team has made 10 or more three-pointers in a game this season … the Bulldogs have made eight or more three-pointers in a game 12 times in 18 games this season … under head coach Jeff Rutter, the team is averaging 9.9 three-pointers per game, an average that would rank 14th nationally if stretched over the entire season.

Evansville (10-9, 1-5)

Illinois State (14-4, 6-0)

Seeing a Pattern

Evansville’s top two scorers complemented each other very well in UE’s games at Missouri State and home versus Southern Illinois. Jaylon Brown and Ryan Taylor tallied 19 points apiece in both games last week for the Purple Aces. After combining to go 15-of-36 in Springfield, the duo hit 12 out of 19 shots against the Salukis.

Looking at the Numbers

In non-conference play this season, UE posted a 9-4 mark. Pacing that was the offense, which averaged 71.2 points per game and shot 47.4%. Through six league games, the Aces are 1-5. The offense has notched just 61.8 PPG while hitting 38.2% of its attempts.

Making an Impact

Over the last week of play, David Howard had what may have been his top stretch of his senior campaign at UE. At Missouri State, Howard fell just two points shy of his first career double-double. He grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds while scoring 8 points. He had a nice 6-point, 6-rebound effort as the Aces returned home on Saturday versus SIU.

On Top of the MVC

Illinois State has sole possession of first place in the MVC standings for the first time since the 1997-98 season (when head coach Dan Muller was a senior), which is also the last time ISU won the MVC regular-season and tournament titles. Saturday’s win also knocked Wichita State out of first place in the conference standings for the first time since the end of the 2013 season. The Shockers had been either alone in first place or tied for first since 2013-14.

Winning Ways

By beating Wichita State, Illinois State won its seventh-straight game to mark ISU’s longest winning streak since also earning sevenstraight to begin the 2009-10 season. The Redbirds are aiming to win eight in a row for the first time since starting the 2008-09 season with a 14-game winning streak. ISU also extended its home-court winning streak to 15-straight games, dating back to last season.

Road Warriors

After dropping their first three road games by an average margin of -4.7 points, the Redbirds have won four-straight road contests by an average margin of +18.5 points. ISU’s four-game road winning streak is the program’s longest since also winning four-straight in 2008-09. Illinois State is aiming to win its fifth-straight road game in the same season for the first time since 1997-98. The Redbirds also won sixconsecutive road games stretched across the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. Additionally, Illinois State has won its first three MVC road games for the first time since also winning its first three in 1997-98. The Redbirds will try to win their first four MVC road contests for the second time in program history and the first time since 1982-83.

Indiana State (7-11, 1-5)

Loyola (13-6, 3-3) Doyle Rules

Bouncing Back

In the last seven seasons, the Sycamores have been known as a team with the ability to bounce back from defeat. Since the 201011 campaign, the Sycamores are 53-44 in a game which follows a loss. Indiana State last rebounded from a loss at Drake to down Bradley on January 14.

Success at Home

The Sycamores are 68-25 (.731) inside Hulman Center under seventh-year head coach Greg Lansing. The Sycamores have won 58 of their last 79 home games. Additionally, the Sycamores have won 42 of their last 57 MVC games at home. Indiana State owns a win in their last meeting with every MVC opponent at home with the exception of Illinois State, Wichita State and Southern Illinois. Indiana State is 5-3 this season at home. The longest stretch of current success against a league member is eight wins in a row at home against Bradley after Saturday’s 81-71 victory over the Braves.

61 MVC Wins Under Lansing

In seven seasons under the direction of head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores have amassed a total of 61 Missouri Valley Conference victories. Those 61 MVC wins by coach Lansing are secondmost in the history of the program as he trails only Royce Waltman who won 69 league games during his tenure. Additionally, the 61 MVC victories for the Sycamores since the 2010-11 campaign ranks third-best among current conference members. Wichita State’s 98 leads the league while Indiana State has 61 and Northern Iowa is second with 68. The next closest programs behind the Sycamores are Illinois State at 58 and Evansville with 56.

Milton Doyle is playing like a MVC Player of the Year candidate this season, but especially of late. The only player to rank among the top five in the conference in both scoring (16.1 ppg) and assists (4.7 apg) this season, the senior guard is putting up 25.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 5.3 apg and 1.7 spg over the last three outings. Doyle has scored in double figures in 20 consecutive games dating back to last season and enters this week’s action ranked 15th on Loyola’s career scoring chart with 1,424 points and seventh with 406 assists.

Looking for Plus .500

A victory at UNI on Wednesday would move Loyola over the .500 mark in Valley play for the first time since a 50-47 decision over Drake on Jan. 14, 2015 improved the Ramblers to 3-2 in MVC play.

Sister Jean

Loyola icon, Sr. Jean Dolores Schmidt, the 97-year-old men’s basketball team chaplain, will be inducted into the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame at halftime of Saturday’s (Jan. 21) game versus Evansville.

Great at Home

Sunday’s win over Missouri State improved the Ramblers’ record to 9-1 at Gentile Arena this season. With five games remaining at home, Loyola has a chance to post 10 or more wins on its home floor for the second time in the Porter Moser era. The 2014-15 Ramblers, who won the CBI title, notched 13 wins at Gentile Arena.

UNI (6-11, 1-5)

The Code on the Road

The Bears wrap up a two-game Valley road swing on Wednesday in Terre Haute and are averaging 70.8 points per game in true road games this season. MSU is converting 76.1 percent of its free throws away from JQH Arena, with a +20 margin in 3-pointers -- 57 to 37. The Bears have also matched or out-rebounded four straight foes on the road.

Windex Watch

Missouri State has now compiled seven straight games matching or out-rebounding its opponents, including all six MVC contests. Sunday’s loss at Loyola marked the first time this season the Bears have out-rebounded an opponent and not emerged with the victory. For the season, MSU has out-rebounded 13 of its 19 opponents and gone 12-1 when doing so, while matching two other foes on the glass.

Hall of Famer

MSU’s annual Athletics Hall of Fame induction weekend is slated for Jan. 20-21. Among the seven inductees in the 2017 class is basketball standout Ben Kandlbinder (1994-98) who was a four-year starter for the Bears of coaches Mark Bernsen and Steve Alford. Kandlbinder was seventh in Bears’ career scoring at end of his MSU playing days with 1,429 points and was second in career three-point field goals with 142. He averaged 12.5 points a game over his 114game MSU career and helped the Bears to 24 wins and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament as a junior. He was a Missouri Valley Conference all-conference pick once and an academic all-conference selection three times, gaining a spot on the MVC all-tournament team as a senior.

High Percentage Koch

Junior Bennett Koch set a McLeod Center record by making all eight of his field goal attempts and scored a season-high 21 points in a 79-60 win over Drake. Koch surpassed the previous best field goal mark in the McLeod Center set by Seth Tuttle, who was 7-of-7 in field goals vs. North Florida (11/22/14). The only Panther to have a better night from the field is Matt Schneiderman, who went 10-for-10 from the field vs. Wayne State (11/25/02). Koch leads the Panthers in field goal percentage this season (.622).

Haldeman Stays Hot

Redshirt freshman Spencer Haldeman has recorded three straight double-figure scoring games and ranks second on the team in scoring at 9.3 points per game. Haldeman scored a team-high 16 points at Bradley and then followed it up with 10 points off the bench vs. Drake on Sunday. Haldeman is tied for the team lead in 3FG made (36).

Panthers Making Shots

UNI had its highest shooting percentage game of the season Sunday when the Panthers made 56.9 percent of its shots. UNI had not shot that well at home in the McLeod Center since last season’s MVC opener vs. Bradley when the Panthers buried 58.7 percent of its shots in an 80-44 victory. UNI’s 56.9 percent shooting is the highest shooting game for the Panthers since last season’s 61.8 percent shooting game at Drake (2/6/16) - a span of 29 games.

Double-Double Machine

F Sean O’Brien (6-7, 215, Sr.) has six double-doubles on the season and 15 in his career. The last Saluki player to have more than six double-doubles in a season was G Jeff Early, who had eight in 2013. O’Brien is the 45th player in school history to reach 1,000 points in his career. He currently stands 36th in scoring at SIU with 1,078 points. O’Brien is also 13th in career rebounds (680) at SIU. A preseason Second-Team All-MVC pick, O’Brien has 108 career starts, including 85-straight. He is ninth in career starts.

Lloyd Steps Up in Starting Role

G Sean Lloyd (6-5, 215, So.) has started five-straight games and seven of the last nine. As a starter, he is averaging 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 30.0 minutes. He’s coming off a 14-point outing at Evansville, which matched his career high.

Rodriguez to Bol Connection

The biggest beneficiary of Mike Rodriguez passing prowess has been C Thik Bol. Of Rodriguez’ 85 assists this season, 33 percent (28) have led to baskets by Bol. Bol has shown he can finish with authority — 39 of his 77 field goals (51 percent) have been dunks.

Margin Call

Wichita State is one of just two Division I teams that rank in the top-30 nationally in both rebounding margin and turnover margin (Louisiana is the other). The Shockers enter the week at +8.5 on the boards (11th) and are +3.4 in turnovers (30th).

Long Run Atop Standings

After a run of nearly four consecutive years atop the MVC standings, the Shockers find themselves looking up. Saturday’s loss at Illinois State knocked them out of first place for the first time since March, 2013 when they dropped a winner-take-all finale at co-leader Creighton.

Winning Away From Home

Since 2013-14, WSU is 27-3 (.900) in conference road games. Over that span, the Shockers have more double-figure road wins (20) than any other school has total road wins. UNI is the closest with 14.
