Making Movies with Movie Maker Capture Video – Importing assets into the project Movie Maker will allow you to import video, graphics and audio files into the project. Your first job will be to import video. 1. Click on the Import Video link Under “Capture Video” 2. Change the “Look in” to be the folder that you have saved your video 3. Click on the video file you want to import 4. Click the “Import” button Movie Maker will populate the “Collection” with your video and may break the video into sections (places were you pressed the stop record while filming). You are now ready to start using the video in the project. Storyboard vs. Timeline View At the bottom of the screen you will see an area that you will use to build your movie. You can create your projects in either “Storyboard” or “Timeline” view. In the storyboard view the project will look like a series of boxes. You may drag video clips or images into these boxes and arrange your content much like a storyboard. The timeline view will show your project in terms of how long each piece lasts. In this view you will see a timeline at the top that indicates how long something lasts in seconds. To toggle between these views simple click the “Show Timeline” or “Show Storyboard” buttons.

Drag Assets onto the Work Area You may drag any of the assets you import onto the work area in either Storyboard or Timeline view. 1. Select the asset you want to use 2. Click and drag it onto the work area

You are now ready to adjust the time the asset exists in the movie. Splitting a Clip It is possible to split a clip into sections using the “Split” tool. 1. Change the work area to “Timeline” view. 2. Drag the clip onto the timeline 3. Move the play head to the point in the clip that you want to split the clip. 4. Press the “split” button – located under the preview screen.

The video is now split into two pieces. This is useful for trimming unwanted portions of a video out of an otherwise useful video clip.

Import Pictures Movie Maker will allow you to import pictures you have saved off the web or pictures taken with a digital camera (acceptable file types include jpg, jiff, gif, png, tif, wmf, and bmp). 1. Click the “Import pictures” link under “Capture Video” 2. Change the “Look in” to be the folder that you have saved your pictures 3. Click on the image file you want to import 4. Click the “Import” button You may now drag the image onto the timeline or storyboard. Import Audio or Music Movie Maker will allow you to import audio files that you have recorded in Audacity or music files that you have saved on your computer (acceptable audio file types include wav, aif, aiff, aifc, asf, au, mp2, mp3, mpa, snd, wma). NOTE – you can’t import music from iTunes, these are mp4 and are NOT supported. 1. Click the “Import audio or music” link under “Capture Video” 2. Change the “Look in” to be the folder that you have saved your pictures 3. Click on the sound file you want to import 4. Click the “Import” button You may now drag the sound onto the Audio/Music channel in timeline view. NOTE – You can also drag a video clip onto the Audio Music channel if you just want to use the audio from the video clip. So you could record the narration with the video camera and then simply import the video clip and use it as a sound asset.

Adding Video Effects Movie Maker comes with several video effects that can help spice up your movie. For example if you wanted the video to look like an old fashion film then you could apply the “Film Age, Oldest” effect to the video clip. 1. Click “View video effects” under the “Edit Movie” section 2. Change your work area to Storyboard (works in Timeline view as well, but I think it is easier to do this from storyboard view). 3. Drag the effect you want to apply onto the video clip you want it applied to. 4. You will see the star in the lower left corner of the video clip turn blue to indicate that an effect has been applied.

NOTE – You can apply more than one effect to a video clip. To remove an effect, click on the blue star and hit the delete key on your keyboard.

Add Video Transitions You can add a transition between sections of the storyboard. These are animations that occur as the movie moves from one piece of the storyboard to another – much like PowerPoint. 1. Click on “View video Transitions” under the “Edit Movie” section. 2. Change your work area to Storyboard (works in Timeline view as well, but I think it is easier to do this from storyboard view). 3. Drag the transition you want to apply onto the small box that has the gray and white pattern in it.

4. You will see the same transition picture show in the box that you dragged from the list.

Make Titles and Credits You can add a title screen or film credits to your movie. There are many different options when adding a title: Add title at the beginning of the movie, Add title before the selected clip on the storyboard, Add title on the selected clip on the storyboard, Add title after the selected clip on the storyboard, and Add credits at the end of the movie. 1. Click on the “Make titles or credits” link under “Edit Movie” 2. Select the type of title or credit you want to create 3. Type your text 4. Change animation by clicking on the “Change the title animation” 5. Change the font by clicking on the “Change the text font and color” link 6. When all your changes have been made apply the title by clicking “Done, add title to movie” Publish the Movie When you have added all your content and finished all the final touches, you should publish the movie. To include your video on GTube you should follow the following steps. 1. Click on “Save to my computer” under the “Finish Movie” section 2. Enter a file name in section number one. 3. Make note of the location you will be saving the movie to in section two. 4. Click “Next” 5. Click the link that says “Show more Choices…” on the “Movie Settings” screen. 6. Choose “Other settings” from the three choices

7. From the dropdown menu choose “High quality video (large)” – This will create a WMV video file that is 640 X 480 (this can be verified in the Setting Details section in the lower left portion of the screen). 8. Click “Next” – your movie is being saved in the location you specified in step 3. 9. Click “Finish” when it gets done making the movie.

NOTE – You will need to copy this file onto gshare in the “Videos” folder and let Scott know that it is there for it to be added to GTube. All class projects should be added to the website in this manner.
