Windows XP Windows Movie Maker 2.6 Detailed Instructions: 

Create a folder on your Desktop to hold all the media files for your movie.  This is where you will save the video clips, still photos, clip art, graphics, as well as any audio files you wish to use in the creation of your movie  Before you log off, create a Backup folder of your Desktop media folder on your USB flash drive or G drive  This is an emergency backup in case something happens to the computer you’re currently using  You will need to use the same computer each time you work on your film project or you will have to reload all files into Movie Maker  You cannot use “virtual computers” when working on video and audio projects.

If you are using media created by others, downloaded from the internet, etc. keep a list with all the information required for your citation/credits. Fulfill all copyright requirements.

Windows Movie Maker Supported File Types: These are the ONLY file extensions accepted by Window Movie Maker 2.6:  Audio files: .aif, .aifc, .aiff .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wma  Picture files: .bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, and .wmf  Video files: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv

The Film Clips:  If you use a non-tape storage digital movie camera you may be able to pull your movies directly into Movie Maker. Check the acceptable file format list above. This includes movie cameras with a hard drive or memory card. The Flip cameras DO NOT create a video file in an acceptable format.  Some digital cameras have a fire wire connection which may also allow you to capture your movie directly into Movie Maker. See the Additional Resources page for tutorials outlining these steps.  If your movie is not in one of these formats, you may have to convert it somehow. This may involve processing the movie through another program, Any Video Converter.      

If Movie Maker opened in the Storyboard View as shown at right, click on Show Timeline

Now it’s time to click and drag your film clip(s) down into the Timeline in the order in which you wish them to appear

Click File > Save Project As > Name the file and save it into the Desktop folder you created at the beginning of the project

Drag your still images, if any, where you want them in the video line as well.

You may “time” the still pictures to stay on the screen for a specified time - the default is 5 seconds which is pretty long. 2 - 3 seconds is usually sufficient. 

You can click the insert point anywhere on the video line, click on Clip > Split to split the video and add a still image or graphic within the video itself

Keep an eye on the total length of the playing time of your movie, shown in minutes and seconds. Do not go over or under your required video length.

The Audio Clips  If you do not already have the appropriate music you may use the links provided on the next page, determine which music you’d like to add to the movie 

Download clips from the websites by using the download function provided on the page or right click the audio link and “Save link as” or Save target as” into the Desktop folder

If you downloaded audio files into iTunes, you will have to copy those files into the Desktop folder, instructions for that process are on page 3

Preview your work and save the project

Now drag in the next clip and follow the same process until you have all the desired clips edited into Movie Maker

Save your project again

Now go to section 2 in the Task pane 

Click View video effects  These may only be added to still images, not video  Click on effect and click the play button to preview the action  Click and drag the effect onto the still image it should apply to

Click View video transitions  These are transitions between items  Again, you may preview the transition by clicking on it and hitting the play button  Click and drag the transition between the two items on the video line
