STEP #1: CAPTURING VIDEO/PHOTOS/AUDIO Importing From Your Digital Video Camera 1. Connect your camera to your computer. 2. Turn on the camera to the playback mode. 3. Choose Capture Video from the Movie Tasks menu. 4. In Available Devices, select your camera. 5. In Audio Device, select your camera’s audio. 6. Click Next.

7. Create a file name for the video. 8. Choose a saving location. (NOTE: Your video clips will be saved on your computer as well as imported into your current WMM project.) 9. Click Next. 1

10. Recommended: Uncheck Create Clips When Wizard Finishes. 11. Through your camera’s video playback mode, locate the portion of the video you want to capture. 12. Click the Start Capture button, then play back on the camera the video segment you want to capture. 13. Click the Stop Capture button when you are finished. 14. Stop the camera’s playback mode. 15. Click Finish.

The video clip will appear in the Collections area of your WMM screen. It will also be saved to your computer. You can view/hear your imported media in the Preview Area by selecting it in the Collections Area. Any media imported into a collection can be used in any WMM project. Use the drop down menu to browse other collections. Importing Media Already on Your Computer 1. Choose the Import from the Movie Tasks menu. 2. Browse to locate the video/pictures/audio.

3. Recommended: Uncheck Create Clips for Video. 4. Choose Import.

STEP #2: EDIT MOVIE NOTE: The following directions are for the Timeline view. If the Storyboard view is showing, click Show Timeline.

If necessary, expand the video track by clicking the + sign.

Drag desired media from the Collection to the proper layer of the timeline. NOTE: If audio is present in a video, it will appear in the Audio Layer. Deleting one will delete the other. To mute a video’s audio, select the clip on the timeline, then choose Clip > Audio > Mute. Playing Your Imported Clips and/or Movie in Progress You can use the slider on the timeline to choose a play back starting point.

Use the controls in the Preview Area to play, pause, advance, rewind, etc. Stop

Splitting Media Clips 1. Play the clip in the preview area. 2. Pause at the point of the desired division. 3. Click the Split Clip button. 4. The clip will now appear as two clips in the Collection. Trimming Media Clips on the Timeline

1. Select the clip on the timeline. 2. Place your mouse over the black arrow at the beginning or end of the clip. 3. When the red arrow appears, drag toward the center of the clip. NOTE: Photos will be 5 seconds long by default. Use the trimming process above to lengthen or shorten a photo’s duration. Moving/Reordering Media Clips 1. Select the clip on the timeline. 2. Place your mouse over the center of the clip. 3. When the hand appears, drag the clip to the desired location on the timeline. NOTE: Clips can be overlapped for a superimposed effect. 3

Combining Media Clips 1. In the Collection Area, select the clips to be combined. 2. Choose Clip > Combine. Capturing a Still Image from Video 1. Play the clip in the preview area. 2. Click the Pause button. 3. Click the Take Picture button. 4. Create a file name and a saving location. 5. Click Save. NOTE: The photo will automatically imported into the current collection as well as saved on your computer. Recording Narration NOTE: Your computer must have a microphone (built-in or plug in) to record audio. 1. Click the microphone icon.

2. Click the Start Narration button. 3. When you are done speaking, click the Stop Narration button. 4. Create a file name and a saving location. 5. Click Save. NOTE: The narration clip will automatically imported into the current collection as well as saved on your computer. Fading In/Fading Out NOTE: You can apply a fade in and/or out to any media (video, audio, photos). 1. Select the media on the timeline. 2. Choose Clip > Video (or Audio) > Fade In (or Fade Out.) 3. To apply both a fade in and a fade out on the same clip, repeat the steps above.

Video Effects To add an effect, choose View Video Effects from the Movie Tasks menu, and drag it on top of the video clip. NOTE: Multiple effects can be applied to one clip. 1. To remove an effect, select the clip on the timeline. 2. Choose Clip > Video > Video Effects. 3. In the Displayed Effects window, choose the effect you want to delete. 4. Click Remove. 4

Video Transitions 1. To add a Video Transition, choose View Video Transitions from the Movie Tasks menu. 2. Drag the desired effect from the Video Effects window between two clips. 3. To remove a transition, select in on the timeline, and press the delete key on your keyboard. Make Titles or Credits 1. To add a title or credit, choose Make Titles or Credits from the Movie Tasks menu. 2. Choose a clip on the timeline. 3. Choose a placement from the Titles and Credits window. 4. Under More Options, format and/or animate the title/credits, or click Done. Title Overlay If you choose the Add Title on the Selected Clip in the Timeline option, the title will appear in the Title Overlay Layer. You can drag the title overlay clip anywhere on the movie. To edit a title/credit at any time, double click it on the timeline.

STEP #3: FINISH MOVIE Saving Your Project To save your work in progress so that you can continue to work on it in the future, choose File > Save Project As. This saves your work as .mswmm (Microsoft Windows Movie Maker) file, which is editable. NOTE: Deleting or moving the original media files saved on your computer will delete them from the .mswmm file. Save to My Computer This option will save you file as a .wmv, which is viewable in Windows Media Player. A .wmv file is not editable. To make changes, keep a copy of the .mswmm file. Save to CD If your computer has a CD burner, this option will walk you through the steps of burning it to a CD. Send in an Email Saves it as .wmv and attaches it to email message in your default email program. If FirstClass has been set as your default email program, it will attach to a FirstClass message. Send to the Web This option attempts to send your movie to a 3rd party web service provider. It does not save it to your Quia website, if you have one.
