Font Utilities from Soft Union

Description

The Soft Union utilities consist of five programs that help you customize fonts for your application′s unique requirements.

What is the AFP Font Collection?

The IBM AFP Font Collection provides a comprehensive set of fonts and utilities to give you consistent printed output on AFP printers using 240 or 300 dots per inch (dpi) raster fonts, or on AFP printers that use outline fonts at any resolution. The fonts provided with this program can be installed in IBM′s AIX , OS/400, and OS/2 operating systems, and in Windows. The fonts provided in the companion product, IBM AFP Font Collection for OS/390 , VM and VSE, can be installed in S/390. The Type Transformer and Utilities for Windows feature also includes compatible outline fonts in the standard Type 1 and Character Identifier (CID) keyed outline font architectures. These fonts can be used with the AFP Viewer to view your AFP documents in Windows or OS/2 environments, or on a Web server via the Netscape or Internet Explorer Web browsers with WYSIWYG fidelity to the printed AFP document.

The FontLab editor is a full feature digital typeface editor with a GUI that lets you create or edit Type 1 and CID outline fonts. If you need a specially designed font typeface or style, this utility can help you create it.

The Composer is a DBCS typeface editor that enables the creation of User Defined Characters which can then be converted into AFP fonts using the Type Transformer.

ScanFont is a tool that lets you scan images and convert them into an outline font format.

SigMaker lets you add signatures or other black and white graphics to TrueType fonts. The FontLab editor, Composer or TypeTool can then be used to convert the TrueType fonts into Type 1 or CID formats for use with the Type Transformer.

The new Type Transformer and Utilities optional feature of AFP Font Collection provides programs that let you convert any Type 1 or CID font typeface in the market into an AFP font. FontLab Editor even lets you modify those fonts to meet your unique design requirements. To support these new capabilities in the Windows environment, Font Collection now includes the same AFP fonts that are available for IBM operating systems in a Windows NT format. The corresponding Type 1 and CID-keyed outline fonts are also included.

TypeTool is a basic font supplement outline fonts.

Type Transformer

This program is EuroReady.

The Single-Byte Character Set (SBCS) Type Transformer transforms Type 1 outline fonts to 240-dpi or 300-dpi raster format, or AFP outline font format for use on AFP printers. The Double-Byte Character Set (DBCS) Type Transformer transforms CID-keyed outline fonts into AFP 240-dpi raster and AFP outline font formats. It has a new GUI to help build DBCS fonts, and a Job Manager to control execution of the jobs.

What′s New in This Release?

to

revise

and

Year 2000 This product does not have date dependencies and is, therefore, Year 2000 ready.

Euro Currency

http://www.ibm.com/euro EuroReady Products

IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (that is, hardware, software, firmware, and so forth) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards.

Code Page Editor

The Code Page Editor has a new GUI that allows you to convert an AFP code page object into a text-readable file. You can then edit the file with any text editor to add, change, or delete code point assignments, character identifier assignments, and global code point control information. The edited file is then rebuilt into a code page object.

Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be “not ready” for euro unless otherwise stated in the product′s country-specific specifications.

Coded Font Editor

The Coded Font Editor has a new GUI that allows you to convert an AFP coded font object into a text readable file. You can then edit the file using any text editor to add, change, or delete character set and code page assignments. For coded fonts that name AFP outline character sets, you can also change the point size. The edited file is then rebuilt into an AFP coded font object.

IBM Hardware Ready

IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party products are, in themselves, EuroReady.

AFP Object Store

AFP Object Store is a utility that lets you transfer AFP objects from the PC to OS/390, VM, VSE and OS/400 in the respective formats required for printing. Objects are reblocked on OS/390 and VM. A transfer mechanism is provided for font object sets to VSE and OS/400.

Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready.

EuroReady Solutions

IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have: •

Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules

Built in appropriate function

and can clearly demonstrate this by: •

Detailing euro related requirements

Describing how these will be implemented in the solution

Declaring when the implementation will be generally available

The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts document.

Product Positioning IBM AFP Font Collection is a member of the family of software products that support IBM′s de facto industry standard AFP/IPDS printing architecture. AFP printing solutions are now available on OS/390, VM, VSE, OS/400, AIX, OS/2 and Windows NT. The Type Transformer and Utilities feature gives AFP application developers the flexibility to select any typeface available in the market in a Type 1 or CID-keyed outline format, modify it if desired, and convert it into an AFP font for printing on AFP printers from 12 to over 1000 pages per minute.
