You are Invited to Join an Illustrious Group of Authors If you are interested in writing for the development, accounting, finance, not-for-profit management and related professions, we would like to hear from you...whether or not you have ever written a book before. Experience in and knowledge of one of these areas, and a desire and ability to communicate your knowledge are the only prerequisites. This material presents an overview of AFP and its publishing program.

About the Association of Fundraising Professionals Philanthropy--voluntary action for the common good--is a necessary element of civic betterment and those activities that address social needs. Fundraising is an essential discipline in the philanthropic process. The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), an individual member association, advances philanthropy through education, training, advocacy, research, and a code of ethical principles and standards of professional practice. AFP is a not-for-profit corporation organized in accordance with Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code. AFP is a rapidly growing international association, and the largest generalist organization of its type in the world. To accomplish its education and training mission, AFP develops and delivers learning programs, supports advocacy and public education, and produces practicerelated materials for development professionals. These and other benefits of membership are delivered through AFP’s 190+ chapters and directly to members and other professionals.

The AFP Publishing Advisory Committee Charged with guiding the AFP's publishing activities, the committee is composed of AFP members with substantial experience in development and a commitment to providing colleagues and others in the nonprofit sector with the best published works in the field. The Committee meets regularly to develop editorial direction and emphases, evaluate

preliminary and full book proposals, and guide successful proposals through writing, editing, and publication.

John Wiley and Sons, Inc John Wiley and Sons, Inc. is a leading independent publisher of quality works in business, not-for-profit management, law, architecture, computers, science and technology, and general trade titles. Wiley serves professionals, researchers, and students with reference works, textbooks, journals, and subscription products. Wiley titles are translated into nearly 50 languages; they are marketed around the world by Wiley subsidiaries and affiliates on five continents.

The AFP Fund Development Series

AFP’s and Wiley's roles as strategic partners in the AFP Fund Development Series is a significant demonstration of both organizations' commitment to the field. Established in 1996 with the publication of its initial work, The AFP Fundraising Dictionary, the AFP Fund Development Series was created to provide development professionals with the cutting-edge information they need to reach their professional goals and advance their careers. The series continues to grow each year with the addition of new titles on a variety of topics ranging from the practical (The Nonprofit Handbook: Fundraising, by James M. Greenfield, ACFRE, FAHP) to the thought-provoking (Critical Issues in Fundraising, edited by Dwight F. Burlingame, Ph.D., CFRE). The AFP Fund Development Series currently includes more than twenty titles. Please refer to the enclosed book list for details.

The New Book Proposal Review Process The volunteers and staff of AFP and of our publishing partners are made up of association, fundraising and publishing professionals with extensive experience in writing, editing, publishing and marketing books for professionals. If you publish with AFP you can count on advisors and editors with the experience, expertise and resources to help you communicate your work as fully and expeditiously as possible.

Your New Book Idea It is not necessary to have a completed manuscript in order to start a new publishing project. Prospective authors may submit an original book idea, or respond to an invitation to submit a proposal for a book on a specific topic. Either way, we will need a detailed description of the proposed book before a book contract can be offered. The New Book Proposal is the standard format we use to obtain that description. The proposal process involves the Preliminary New Book Proposal (optional) and the Full Book Proposal.

Step One: The Preliminary Proposal - is optional and you may skip to step two if desired. If you have an idea for a book (or if you have a partially written or complete manuscript), the first step in getting your work published is to complete a Preliminary Book Proposal--an informal "trial balloon." The preliminary proposal is intended to help the Committee determine whether your project is consistent with its editorial policy and direction. Preliminary book proposals are first sent to each Committee member for independent evaluation and comment. The proposal is then discussed by the full Committee at one of its monthly conferences, and a recommendation made either to request a Full Book Proposal from the author or to decline the book idea. Generally, authors are notified of the Committee’s action within one week of its decision. The Preliminary Book Proposal should be presented in narrative form, limited to a maximum of 2 typewritten pages and should address: • a summary of the book; • a table of contents of your book; • a list of tools, tables, appendices; • overview of the market and the book’s potential competition; • qualifications of the author (this section may be supplemented by the author’s biography resume, or samples of prior publications) and unique features, special angle or approach. Please email your preliminary proposal to:

Step Two: The Full Book Proposal

If your book idea fits within the Committee’s publishing plan, you will be asked to develop a full proposal to be formally considered for support within AFP's publishing program (please see the enclosed form). The Full Book Proposal will be a more complete and rigorous exposition of your book idea, and its focus, approach, and potential marketability. At this point, you may also be asked to supply writing samples or other materials to facilitate the Committee’s decision. The formal proposal is evaluated first by the Committee and then, if recommended for publication, by Wiley’s editorial board. Upon final approval of the book idea, a contract is negotiated between the author and the publisher.

Developing a Manuscript Following acceptance of a proposal and the completion of a contract, you will develop your manuscript under the guidance of your Wiley editor. This phase usually takes between 6 and 12 months, depending on your work plan and the nature of the book. Two members of the Committee will be assigned to your manuscript, to serve as Manuscript Advisors. The content will also be reviewed to ensure consistency with AFP's Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice. Your Wiley editor will answer any questions you may have about footnoting, permissions, marketing and sales, working with co-authors, or any other phase of the publishing process.

Keeping it Accurate Following designer’s specifications, the copy editor will mark your text for the printer. Naturally, any substantive changes are subject to discussion with the author. In most cases, you will be asked to review your book in both edited manuscript and page-proof form. The production department checks it for printing quality, but as the most knowledgeable reader of your own material, you are its principal proofreader. Your production supervisor will guide you during proofreading.

Marketing Your Book Our aim is not just producing an excellent book--but effectively putting it into the hands of readers. To ensure that each book will reach its widest potential audience -both in the U.S. and abroad -- AFP and its publishing partners will work as a team to develop an individual marketing plan tailored to your book.
