Letter from the President Hello everyone, and welcome to the full slate of Board Members as we started an exciting new fiscal year in June! I know that serving our beloved Guild with such knowledgeable and dedicated women will be a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. And they will help settle my nerves a bit while I begin this new role. From all I have gained being a part of this organization, I am humbled and honored to be starting a term as President. On behalf of the Board and the Guild, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Janet Knoblauch for her service as President the past year and a half. Janet graciously stepped into this position upon an unexpected vacancy, and she did a marvelous job, making the transition for me easier. I know her continued guidance and support will be of tremendous benefit. Thank you Janet! Inside this issue:

Traditional Japanese Embroidery Embroidered Letters

My foray into needlework began with basic cross-stitch on Aida. In fact, it just occurred to me that I still have a WIP nativity scene tree-skirt (yes, entirely on Aida) from my late-teens stashed away. I was in my 30’s when I started stitching again, and my goodness, how things had changed. Hand-dyed linens and fibers, the varieties of fibers, including silks, and the use of beads/other embellishments. What fun and enlightenment! I joined the Guild several years ago, encouraged by a dear friend, and it has been a blessing in several ways. The learning opportunities through the Guild have expanded my interests into counted needlepoint (my favorite – those who know me well know my “issues” with painted canvas), sampler bands with specialty and pulled stitches, beading and Japanese Embroidery. Although I am a novice at JE, it is true; the techniques you learn improve all your needlework. In Pat Donaldson’s recent NGM Workshop, I finally learned drawn thread techniques, something I have been hesitant to do on my own. Yes, the fear of cutting threads got in my way. But, I am determined to one day learn Hardanger, and this was a big step towards that goal. As with many things in life, once we give something a try, in the end, it turns out it was not as difficult as we thought it might be. More importantly, it is through the Guild that I have met and befriended many talented and inspirational women, who are willing to share their knowledge and gifts freely, helping in any way they can. Some of my closest friendships evolved through the Guild, our “stitching sisterhood.” Or, as one of my wise doctors suggested, “sisterhood of fabric magic.” Thus, how fitting for Kathy Peterson and Stacy Handeland to use Sisters of the Heart for this year’s Retreat theme. Kathy and Stacy have created a wonderful Retreat, with great teachers, fun classes and some surprises. It will be a fantastic time! I looking forward to it all, including meeting my secret sister. See you there, or at an upcoming SIG or Workshop. Kind regards, Theresa Pietenpol

Bradford provides visual and written instructions for the bullion stitch and uses it, along with some knots and satin stitches, in many attractive raised embroidery designs. Projects include bags, brooches, collars, baby bibs, a teddy bear, box tops, a chatelaine.

ANOTHER REMINDER/PLEA!! Many books and magazines have been borrowed from the library and are long overdue. It is great that the library is being used, but please return checked out items, so they are available for all members. THANK YOU!!

Save the Dates! Future NGM Programs:

Years ago, members of NGM designed a spectacular sampler called Desert Rose as part of the Sampler Study group. The pattern was sold to members, a sampler was stitched and framed and raffled off at one of our shows. Mary Kay Gergen won the framed sampler. We are reprinting this sampler pattern and giving members another chance to buy it as a fund raiser for NGM. You can see the finished piece and buy it from the NGM table at Retreat on Saturday at Vendor's night. Stay tuned for photos and more info to order it in the next newsletter

2013 State Fair Demo Dates Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, August 28, 29, 30 - Sign up now! Submitted by Sandra Resnick It’s State Fair Time Again! State Fair demo dates are set for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, August 28, 29, and 30, 2013 (that's just before Labor Day weekend!). Once again we are demonstrating in the Creative Arts building during the State Fair. Not only do you get a free ticket to the fair that day for sitting and stitching for 3 hours with your friends, but you also get to meet and greet new people as they walk by and tell them all about our guild. This is a lot of fun and if you ask people who have done this before, they will tell you that the time flies by. We have been discovered there by local stitchers who became happy new members. Please contact Sandra Resnick at 612-929-5868 or [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering for a 3 hour shift. Three people can fit in the booth at a time so sign up with your friends or sign up by yourself and meet new friends. You will receive more info and your free ticket before the fair begins. If you are at the fair those days, be sure to stop by our booth in the Creative Arts building to say hello.

Shifts that need people the most are 3-6 and 6-9 on Wednesday and noon-3 on Friday.

Stitch-Ins Stitch-ins provide exposure to range of fiber arts through lectures, presentations, and hands-on projects. Daytime and evening topics are usually different. Reminder: if you do not wish to participate in the scheduled program for any meeting, you are always welcome to join us and work on your own project!

Daytime Stitch-Ins Daytime Stitch-Ins are held monthly on the 4th Tuesday from 10:00 am–1:00 pm Chairwoman: Bonnie Buzza, [email protected], 612-353-6695 August 27th Post Retreat Show and Tell, continued Stitch-In Show us your retreat project or vendor finds...and continue stitching your summer project. September 24th Will be another Stitch-In on your own project.....getting us ready for the Fall-Winter Program Arc. September TBD Vesterheim trip is in the planning! The Vesterheim (means "Western Home") Norwegian-American Museum is located about three hours from the Twin Cities, in Decorah, Iowa. Containing a world-class collection of over 24,000 artifacts, it highlights the Norwegian emigrant experience to America, and especially to the Midwest. Norwegian culture is showcased through exhibits and classes in folk arts, including rosemaling, woodcarving and woodworking, and a range of textile arts including wonderful examples of Norwegian needlework. The Daytime Stitch In is contemplating hosting a one-day bus trip to Vesterheim, most likely on a Saturday in the fall. We'd leave early in the morning, have lunch and a tour of the needlework collection, plus a little free time in the afternoon to explore the rest of the museum, and then return to the Cities, possibly stopping along the way for supper. Planning will be facilitated by having a sense of how many people are interested in such a trip…..The cost would include the bus fare, admission (approximately $10.00 per person) and meals--alternately, meals could be done independently. Please let Bonnie Buzza know if you'd like to be kept aware of browning plans and participating in the planning by indicating your preferences regarding optional details (like--preferred date or if we should we pay for lunch and/or dinner independently). Bonnie can be reached [email protected]. Vesterheim's website is www.vesterheim.org for more details about the museum October, November, January, and February The plan is for a collaboration between the Daytime and Evening Stitch-Ins with Red work, Whitework, Blackwork, and Goldwork hints and discussions, with optional project suggestions. Stay tuned...and finish up your current projects (ho-ho) so you can do one or more of these!

Evening Stitch-Ins Evening Stitch-Ins are held monthly on the 4th Tuesday from 7:00 pm–9:00 pm Chairwoman: Elaine Magnan, [email protected], 612-242-7313 August 27th Back from Retreat! Please bring show and tell of the projects you worked on at Retreat. Also, we will have the Second quarterly prize drawing from our February Challenge. Bring in a finished item from your list and be in a drawing for prizes. September 24th New Member Welcome. Light refreshments will be served!
