LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT This 2014-15 Annual Report highlights Central Piedmont Community College’s continued commitment to the students, residents, businesses and industry of Mecklenburg County. As it has done for more than 50 years, the college works to enhance the lives and success of individuals and employers, making Mecklenburg County stronger and more prosperous in the process. A recent economic impact study conducted for the North Carolina Community College System indicated CPCC provides at least $1.1 billion to the Mecklenburg County economy annually. The college is proud to be one of the county’s primary and most reliable economic engines and workforce development partners. CPCC has eagerly taken on the additional role of helping the county realize its future economic vision by becoming a global hub of commerce. Through new, innovative partnerships like the Charlotte Regional Collaborative for a Global Economy and the launch of CPCC’s new Global Logistics Center, CPCC is working hard to bring a global focus to the county’s economic development endeavors. These new efforts combine well with our everyday work of providing specialized and highly focused programs that help Mecklenburg County attract new businesses and more jobs, and prepare our students to enter the county’s workforce. LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Thanks to the support and confidence of the Mecklenburg County Commissioners and Mecklenburg voters, Central Piedmont Community College has launched the largest series of construction projects in the college’s 52-year history. In 2013, Mecklenburg County voters and commissioners approved $280 million to undertake 10 renovation and new construction projects. The first two projects are now complete and provide much-needed laboratories on Central Campus and essential classroom space at Cato Campus. When all 10 projects are completed sometime in 2019-20, the college will have added almost 1 million square-feet of new academic space. This tremendous investment by Mecklenburg County helps ensure CPCC’s ability to offer cutting-edge job training programs, providing the skills and knowledge demanded by our local employers. This expansion in the college’s facilities also gives CPCC the flexibility to develop and offer new programs to meet the everchanging needs of Mecklenburg’s residents, business and industry. SECOND LADY OF THE UNITED STATES DELIVERS 2015 COMMENCEMENT SPEECH Dr. Jill Biden, second lady of the United States, served as CPCC’s 2015 graduation speaker. Dr. Biden addressed more than 800 of CPCC’s 1,800 graduates at the May 14 ceremony. Biden called CPCC “among the best of the best,” praising the college for “equipping students with the skills they need to excel in careers in some of the fastest-growing industries in the United States, such as manufacturing, engineering and healthcare.” Biden said CPCC and other community colleges are a “gateway to a new career, to a four-year university and to a more prosperous life.” She also advocated President Barack Obama’s proposal to waive community college tuition for all students who maintain a 2.5 grade-point average and make steady progress toward earning a degree. CPCC President Dr. Tony Zeiss extended an invitation to the second lady to speak at CPCC’s graduation after meeting her at a 2014 international conference in Switzerland on workforce training.

CPCC OPENS BALLANTYNE CENTER CPCC began offering classes in its new Ballantyne Center in July. The college is leasing 10,000 square feet of space in the Gibson Building, located at 11430 N. Community House Road. “The Ballantyne community is one of the fastestgrowing areas of Mecklenburg County and has been for some time,” explained Dr. Tony Zeiss. “As many as 200,000 Mecklenburg residents and 200 businesses call Ballantyne home, while several Fortune 500 companies have operations in the area. The college sees the need to serve this part of the county more effectively and will do so by having a physical presence there.”

CPCC opened the Ballantyne Center by first offering Corporate and Continuing Education classes. A number of the companies with operations in Ballantyne already are clients of CPCC’s Corporate Learning Center. CUMMINS PARTNERS WITH CPCC TO DEVELOP SKILLED WORKERS Cummins Inc., a global manufacturer, distributor and service provider of diesel and natural gas engines and related technologies, and CPCC have partnered to train students from across North America in Cummins’ Technician Apprentice Program (TAP).

With a program launch in January, groups of 15 Cummins apprentices are now taking classes at CPCC in fiveweek blocks. Over the course of the four-year program, Cummins apprentices will spend the equivalent of two years at CPCC, where they will learn how to build and maintain Cummins diesel engines. When the students complete the program, they will have earned an associate degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology and be Cummins certified in engine and/or power generation.

The apprentices are full-time Cummins employees, with the company paying all program expenses (tuition, fees, books), and providing a complete set of diesel technician tools. ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY FINDS CPCC A VITAL ECONOMIC DRIVER

An economic impact study conducted for the North Carolina Community College System indicates CPCC added $1.1 billion to the Mecklenburg County economy in 2012-13. Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI) conducted the study by looking at CPCC’s economic impact through its operations spending, construction spending, student spending and the financial imprint of the college’s alumni. In 2012-13, CPCC’s payroll and other operations spending equaled approximately $131 million. The college’s new construction and renovation projects added $6.1 million to the local economy. Students who relocated to Mecklenburg County to attend CPCC in 2012-13 put an additional $11.8 million into the county’s economy. EMSI suggests the accumulated economic contribution of CPCC alumni employed in Mecklenburg County amounted to $979.8 million. All totaled, CPCC’s 2012-13 economic impact reached $1.1 billion. “This study confirms what Mecklenburg County residents, leaders and businesses have known for more than 50 years. U.S. DEPT. OF LABOR GRANT BRINGS ALMOST $2.5M TO CPCC In late 2014, CPCC learned it would receive a job-training grant of $2,499,378 from the U.S. Department of Labor. CPCC is using the grant to support its “Mechatronics Re-Envisioned” project, which is helping more students earn degrees, certificates and other industry-recognized credentials in mechatronics. The CPCC grant is part of $450 million in “job-driven training” grants going to nearly 270 community colleges across the country. The funding is part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) competitive grant program. CPCC’s Mechatronics program trains students for positions in today’s high-tech advanced manufacturing environments. The Mechatronics Engineering Technology curriculum prepares students for jobs requiring electrical and mechanical engineering knowledge as well as advanced computer skills. This breadth of knowledge and skills is needed to operate the complex systems found in advanced manufacturing. CPCC was one of the first U.S. community colleges to develop and offer a program in mechatronics. FESTO AND CPCC CREATE A NORTH AMERICAN TRAINING CENTER CPCC and Festo Didactic SE, headquartered in Denkendorf, Germany, agreed in late 2014 to establish a North American training center, located on CPCC’s Central Campus. The joint venture, called the “Festo-CPCC Learning Center of Excellence,” will advocate the growth and development of advanced manufacturing in the United States, while giving CPCC students and incumbent workers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to become highly skilled operators of the latest high-tech manufacturing equipment. Festo Didactic is a world-leading equipment and solution provider for industrial education, designing and implementing learning laboratories, educational equipment and programs that train workers to perform in highly dynamic and complex industrial environments. “We intend for our new joint venture to become the ‘gold standard’ for technical education and training in the United States and North America,” said Dr. Daniel Boese, managing director of Festo Didactic. “Through this large-scale initiative, we will advocate and promote advanced manufacturing as a viable, attractive and lifelong career option for students and new and incumbent workers in the U.S.” Mechatronics Engineering student works with Festo automation equipment in the training center on Central Campus.

CPCC OPENS LEVINE MIDDLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL The Levine Middle College High School (LMCHS), located on CPCC’s Levine Campus, in Matthews, opened its doors to students at the beginning of the 2014-15 school year. The LMCHS is an honors program offered by CharlotteMecklenburg Schools (CMS) that gives high school students the chance to earn college credit tuition-free during their junior and senior years. LMCHS is CMS’ second middle college program. Enrollment is limited to 100 students per grade level. While students take their remaining high school classes at the Levine Campus, they can take their college classes at any of CPCC’s six campuses.

LMCHS classrooms are equipped with the latest technology, and students have access to all CPCC libraries and the privileges of any other CPCC student. All CPCC college courses are provided at no charge to LMCHS students. CPCC’S NURSING PROGRAM CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY CPCC leaders, together with faculty and staff, students, alumni and other supporters, gathered at the college’s Health Careers Building on June 11, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CPCC’s Nursing Program.

“CPCC’s Nursing Program has withstood the test of time, and that’s because it has remained committed to the college’s mission – to provide a high-quality, affordable and accessible education to all,” said Jeanette Cheshire, DNP, RN and director of the Associate Degree in Nursing Program at CPCC. CPCC’s Nursing Program is the oldest nursing program in the N.C. Community College System. The college admitted its first class of 80 students in September 1965. Over the years CPCC’s Nursing Program has flourished and has graduated approximately 3,000 students since its inception. This year’s commencement ceremony included more than 100 nursing graduates, a significant increase from the 29 students who first graduated from the program in 1967. 1. CPCC Nursing program alumni 2. CHARLOTTE REGIONAL COLLABORATIVE FOR A GLOBAL ECONOMY Since 2012, regional and national policy makers and business leaders have met annually at CPCC’s Global Competitiveness Summits to discuss the region’s economic strengths and how to capitalize on them. The Charlotte Regional Collaborative for a Global Economy and the Global Vision Leaders Group hosted the 2015 Global Competitiveness Summit on March 18, at the Harris Conference Center, on CPCC’s Harris Campus. The two groups brought together employers, innovative leaders and the region’s workforce development partners to discuss and determine how to most effectively market Charlotte’s global commerce abilities, while building its global identity, trade alliances and competitiveness. The event was sponsored by JPMorgan Chase & Co., and featured a host of guest speakers, ranging from policymakers to economic developers, who shared best practices about skills training to help ensure the regional workforce is among the best trained in the world. 1. COLLEGE MOURNS PASSING OF H. ALLEN TATE JR. APRIL 23, 1931 – JUNE 22, 2015

Allen Tate employed his entrepreneurial spirit in leading Allen Tate Company to become the largest residential real estate firm in the Carolinas. He was a legendary business and civic leader, visionary and friend of Central Piedmont Community College and its president, Dr. Tony Zeiss. CPCC is honored to have had Allen involved with the college for three decades. He served as a member of the board of trustees and later as a member of the CPCC Foundation board of directors. Last year, he and his wife, Bessie, were honorary co-chairs of CPCC’s 50th anniversary Legacy and Promise campaign, which raised more than $60 million for the college – double the goal. In September 2014, Allen and Bessie became members of CPCC’s Legacy Society with a gift of life insurance to create a clock tower on the college’s Central Campus. Allen wanted to build something that students and graduates would fondly remember, much like he remembered the Old Well at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Tate Tower was dedicated on May 28, and Allen gave a wonderful talk about how, in the beginning, CPCC was just a dream. He observed how CPCC dreamed and became an outstanding resource for the region. He closed by urging the college to “keep dreaming.” In delivering a eulogy at Allen’s funeral on June 26, Dr. Zeiss said, “Allen learned to sell by selling, and he learned to be a leader by leading and serving others. Best of all, he learned to be an extraordinary person by becoming an extraordinary person.” CPCC has lost an extraordinary man and dear friend. CPCC DEDICATES LEVINE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY BUILDING

In recognition of Ralph Pitts’ outstanding service to CPCC, the college honored him with the naming of a building on its Central Campus. “I have little doubt that CPCC would not be the institution it is today without the visionary leadership of Ralph Pitts,” said Dr. Tony Zeiss. As chair of the board of trustees, Pitts oversaw a period of dramatic growth in enrollment, programs and facilities at the college. During his tenure, the college was successful in passing two major bond referendums and completing two of the largest fundraising campaigns in CPCC history. Under Pitts’ leadership, the college developed the Services Corporation as an innovative and significant source of revenue for the college and acquired WTVI PBS Charlotte.

Sandra and Leon Levine, together with Dr. Tony Zeiss and Tom Lawrence, dedicated the Levine Information Technology Building on CPCC’s Central Campus November 6, 2014, in recognition of the Leon Levine Foundation’s generous support of the college. CHARLOTTE HORNETS “SWARM TO SERVE” AT CPCC The Charlotte Hornets and FOX Sports Carolinas/SportSouth joined forces to donate $200,000 to CPCC’s Veterans Employment Fund to provide paid internships for veterans while they are earning their college degree at CPCC. JPMORGAN CHASE PARTNERS WITH CPCC TO SUPPORT GLOBAL WORKFORCE AND LOGISTICS EDUCATION

BANK OF AMERICA PROVIDES FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Bank of America’s continued support of CPCC helps to maintain essential programs that contribute to student success. In 2014-15, Bank of America granted CPCC $100,000 to provide job-related training for low-income, unemployed and underemployed individuals and to deliver academic advising and career counseling to U.S. military veterans enrolled at the college. This grant builds on Bank of America’s past support for these important programs.

JPMorgan Chase awarded CPCC a grant of $235,000 to support the work of the Global Logistics Center. The center was established in 2014 to help prepare workers for the logistics and transportation sectors in the Charlotte area and to contribute to the region’s growth as a global hub of commerce. This grant allowed the college to create the Global Logistics and Distribution Management degree program, first offered in fall 2015 and also supported the college’s Global Competitiveness Summit IV. MERANCAS GRANT PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS

AT&T GIFT FOCUSES ON REDUCING DROP-OUT RATE

Over the years, The Merancas Foundation has had a significant impact on nearly 7,000 CPCC students who have needed financial assistance to achieve their educational and career goals. Nicole Harriot is one of those students. In 2014-15, The Merancas Foundation’s grant provided technical scholarships and program assistance to expand offerings and allow the college to serve more students.

AT&T presented CPCC with a check for $25,000 to help improve graduation rates at Charlotte-area high schools where the drop-out rate exceeds 25 percent. The project involved offering in-school career fairs to students and parents; classroom presentations by area business and industry representatives; internship, apprenticeship and job shadowing opportunities; career-focused tours; tours of area colleges for students and parents; and workshops for parents and students about education and career training programs, application procedures, support services and financial assistance at CPCC and other institutions.

At 40, Nicole found herself suddenly unemployed. With her dad, a master barber in Myrtle Beach as a mentor, she sought out CPCC’s Cosmetology program. Through scholarship assistance provided by The Merancas Foundation, Nicole graduated in May 2015 with a 4.0 grade-point average and will take her licensing exam this fall.

SCHOLARSHIPS HELP STUDENTS BRIDGE FINANCIAL GAPS AND ACHIEVE GOALS Kaye Bernard McGarry Endowed Scholarship

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the CPCC Skyline Run, Kaye and Dennis McGarry gave $20,000 to the Kaye Bernard McGarry Endowed Scholarship fund. This scholarship identifies graduates of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system with a 3.0 GPA who are in need of financial assistance to achieve their academic and vocational goals. For years to come, CPCC students will be able to realize their dreams as a result of this generous gift.

Local Civic and Service Clubs Provide Student Scholarships CPCC is grateful for the support of area civic and service clubs. The Mint Hill Women’s Club, the SouthPark Lions Club and the Uptown Rotary Club each sponsor annual scholarships at the college that provide qualified students with financial support. Groups such as these support the mission of CPCC and its students. Because of these organizations and their members, CPCC is able to serve more students and help them reach their academic and career goals.

Ruth G. Shaw Scholarship Program

Thanks to the Ruth G. Shaw Women’s Leadership Program, 10 female, CPCC students had the opportunity to learn from a host of leading Charlotte businesswomen. The program was developed following a gift from Shaw, the second president of CPCC, who joined the group of mentors and scholars, impressing them with her humility and grace. THE GIFT OF ART Bringing art to people, the vision behind the Patty and Bill Gorelick Galleries at CPCC, brought hundreds of artworks to the college in 2014-15. Following the 2013 “Exhibition of Works from the Gorelick Collections” (works from Patty and Bill’s collection and his sister-in-law and late brother, Carol and Shelton Gorelick) at the college’s Levine Campus in Matthews, Patty and Bill made a gift to CPCC to establish open gallery spaces on all six CPCC campuses by 2020.

CONNORS BRING CHARLOTTE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO STUDENTS

Georgia Tucker, a graceful ballerina and enthusiastic dance instructor at CPCC, passed away in 2009 at the age of 33. Numerous seats within Halton Theater and Pease Auditorium are named for Tucker, and soon there will be a facility that bears her name as well. In 2018, the Georgia Tucker Fine Arts Hall will open in the newest building on the college’s Levine Campus in Matthews and will serve as a classroom, banquet hall and a performing arts space that includes prop storage and dressing rooms. Tucker’s memory and love for all things arts will live on in this space, which will benefit both students and the community.

Thanks to the generous support of Catherine and Wilton Connor, 900 CPCC music appreciation students enjoyed the beautiful sounds of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. The CPCC Foundation celebrated the generosity of the Connors with family and friends at a reception prior to the November 2014 event.

ARTS AND SCIENCE COUNCIL SUPPORTS ARTS AT CPCC

For more than 50 years, CPCC alumni have been achieving success in our community and beyond. Recently, Jim Rogers, a long-time business and civic leader in Charlotte, was honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his lifetime of service to North Carolina. Jim, a self-described lifelong learner, enrolled at CPCC to broaden his knowledge for his newly launched career. He was “impressed by the depth of CPCC’s faculty and the broad range and diverse curriculum,” and knew that CPCC courses would enhance the bachelor’s and master’s degrees he held from East Tennessee State University.

With generous support from the Arts and Science Council (ASC), CPCC presented “Mary Poppins” as part of its 41st Summer Theatre season. For nine sold-out performances, Ms. Poppins made everything “spit spot” at 17 Cherry Tree Lane and treated audiences to a memorable experience. ASC funds helped provide for international guest artists and tickets for underserved youth to attend CPCC’s “Dances of India,” a showcase of Indian history and culture portrayed through dance, drama and narrative.

A respected businessman, philanthropist and volunteer in the Charlotte community, Jim has not forgotten his alma mater and continues to give back in time, talent and financial support noting, “Year after year, CPCC prepares students for today’s workforce by helping them reach their goals.”

CPCC EMPLOYEES AND RETIREES SUPPORT MISSION THROUGH GIVING Family Campaign

CPCC employees show their support for the college’s mission through their annual gifts to the Family Campaign. More than 550 employees participated in the 2014-15 campaign, raising more than $62,700. Funds raised are used to support institutional programs, student scholarships, areas of greatest need, faculty/staff development and campus needs.

Another way faculty and staff support the college and one another is through memorial gifts and scholarships. CPCC lost several employees in 2014-15, and their colleagues came together, often with family members, to continue their legacies by helping CPCC students and programs. • • • •

CPCC Retirees Association

The CPCC Retirees Association provides an opportunity for retirees to socialize with each other, participate in volunteer activities and keep updated on college events. In 2014-15, CPCC retirees enjoyed lunch at the college’s Greenway Restaurant, visited the CPCC Forensics Lab, helped with the CPCC Charlotte Skyline Run, gathered for an annual holiday lunch, and made a donation to the college through the CPCC Foundation. SWIRL Swirl, CPCC’s annual winetasting fundraiser, offered guests a taste of Southern Hemisphere wines and culinary delights prepared by the college’s Baking & Pastry Arts and Culinary programs. The ticketed event included a live auction featuring wines, getaways, CPCC Culinary Artscatered dinners and sporting events tickets. Proceeds from the 2014-15 event benefitted the college’s Culinary Arts programs.

CPCC SPORTING CLAYS CLASSIC Sixty-seven teams of four turned out for the 2015 CPCC Sporting Clays Classic to support veterans and first responder programs and scholarships at the college. Teams competed in both morning and afternoon rounds of competition on a 17-station course at Meadow Wood Farms in Waxhaw. This year’s event included the inaugural B.D. Rodgers Cup in honor of the late B.D. Rodgers. Following the tournaments, CPCC hosted a Twilight Reception and Auction where additional funds were raised and the winning team members of the B.D. 20TH ANNIVERSARY CPCC CHARLOTTE SKYLINE RUN More than 600 runners, walkers and baby joggers braved the wet weather to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the USATF-certified CPCC Charlotte Skyline 5K Run benefitting student scholarships. In recognition of the event’s 20th anniversary, the CPCC Foundation hosted a fashion show and dance routine featuring race T-shirts from the last 20 years. Each year, the logo for the race T-shirt and other promotional material is designed by a CPCC Advertising and Graphic Design student. CENTRAL HIGH GRADUATE NAMES CPCC IN WILL

WIFE’S ESTATE ADDS TO HUGHES FUND

Edith Campbell graduated from Central High School in 1933. The high school, located on CPCC’s Central Campus, is now known as the Central High building and houses enrollment and student services for the college. In making her bequest, Edith challenged her fellow Central High classmates to name the college as a beneficiary in their wills. Edith Campbell Corry passed away at the age of 97, but her memory lives on for those students helped by her gift.

The James Walter Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at CPCC when Hughes passed away in 1991. This fund was designated to receive memorial gifts at his passing. Mr. Hughes was a retired electrical engineer with J. A. Jones Construction Company. His son-in-law, Bill Connelly, was a CPCC faculty member and was instrumental in setting up this fund. Several times during her lifetime, Hughes’ wife, Sudie Brotherton, gave gifts to the scholarship fund. She also named this fund a beneficiary in her will. Soon after her passing in 2014, her bequest was added to the Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund, increasing the opportunities for students to receive assistance for tuition and books. Memorial gifts and bequests to be used for scholarship assistance are two ways to significantly impact CPCC students. The thoughtfulness of the Hughes family is greatly appreciated.
