June 2016 Ellen Bain and I are delighted to invite you to join us for the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American College of Trial Lawyers at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. President-Elect Bartholomew J. Dalton has planned a most impressive program of distinguished speakers addressing current and thought-provoking topics. Fellows and spouses or guests are sure to be entertained, educated, and enlightened by these speakers. As always, College evening social events will provide an opportunity to greet treasured friends and make new ones. We are proud to showcase the best of Philadelphia as we host the Thursday night President’s Welcome Reception at the National Constitution Center and Saturday evening’s reception, dinner, and entertainment at the famed Philadelphia Museum of Art. This year, the traditional highlight of our meeting, the Induction Ceremony and Banquet, will be held on Friday night, where we will induct new Fellows and celebrate with a Black Tie Banquet, followed by dancing and the time-honored “Sing Along.” Tours and activities offered on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons promise to provide opportunities to explore the historic and colorful city of Philadelphia. We anticipate that this meeting will sell out quickly, and we encourage you to register early so that you have an opportunity to stay at our host hotel. INVITED SPEAKERS REBECCA LOVE KOURLIS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INSTITUTE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE AMERICAN LEGAL SYSTEM, FORMER COLORADO SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, RECIPIENT OF THE SAMUEL E. GATES LITIGATION AWARD

Justice Rebecca Love Kourlis believes in the foundations of the American legal system and has dedicated her career, both in and out of the courts, to ensuring that the system provides justice for all. She served Colorado’s judiciary for nearly two decades, first as a trial court judge and then as a justice of the Colorado Supreme Court. During her time on the bench, Justice Kourlis witnessed a system increasingly under attack from outside forces—one that was often failing to deliver the justice she swore to uphold. As a result, in January 2006, she resigned from the Supreme Court to find a way to enact change and thus established the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS), where she serves as Executive Director. Her work at the helm of IAALS is resolute in its focus on continuous improvement of the American legal system, and a logical off-shoot of her accomplishments on the bench where she spearheaded significant reforms in the judicial system. Justice Kourlis has received numerous individual honors and earned her J.D. from Stanford University Law School. DAHLIA LITHWICK SENIOR EDITOR AND LEGAL CORRESPONDENT, SLATE
