HAPPY FIESTA! I hope that you have had an opportunity to celebrate with our city during this festive time. With over 100 events I am sure you were able to find something that you and your family could enjoy. Much energy surrounds the month of April; with the beginning of spring, Fiesta and Easter there is so much to refresh your soul and revitalize your spirit. I would love to have one of your company pins and ask that you save one for me to add to my sash! In the spirit of this season, EWI® of San Antonio had the privilege of sharing in some fun time with the children at the Davidson Respite House. On April 10th, we hosted an Easter Egg Hunt for about 20 special little ones. They loved hunting for eggs and decorating pink cupcakes! I know I speak for all those present when I say, “My heart was rejuvenated by interacting with these children who were so full of life”!

Another great event we have this month is our Executive Recognition Luncheon on April 21 , at the UIW Rosenberg Sky Room. We will honor one of our six nominated executives with the “Executive Excellence Award”: Charlie Amato (SWBC), Ken Batchelor (Batchelor Cadillac), Robert Egger (SSFCU), William Eugene (Gene) Powell (Bitterblue, Inc.), Dr. Ricardo Romo (UTSA), and Kenneth P. Trevett (TX Biomedical Research). The nominees listed have each been a great supporter of our organization and I hope you will encourage your executive to attend and take part in this celebration. th
We will have a Silent Auction with some great items at our April meeting and on May 14 we will be hosting a “Rummage Sale”. Proceeds from both of these events will go towards our B/C/DP Scholarship Program. Denise Cross, representing Arthur Pfeil Smart Flowers, Inc. and her committee are doing a fabulous job this year with some creative fundraising. Way to go ladies! I would like to welcome our newest representatives: Melinda Nail, representing the University of the Incarnate Ward and Emily Kopecky, representing Omni La Mansion del Rio. We look forward to your membership and I know you will find EWI of San Antonio to be a valuable networking resource.

Monique Johnson Security Service Federal Credit Union
By Jan Bennett Steger, Contributing Writer Monique Johnson became a new representative in EWI representing Security Service Federal Credit Union in February, 2011. She attended both Southern University and Park University. Monique is the Assistant Service Center Manager at the Bandera Road location in Boerne where her duties consist of mainly financial management. SSFCU was founded as a not-for-profit credit union to serve the needs of members of the US Air Force, but it has grown now into serving 825,000 members. There are currently 70 SSFCU locations in Texas, Colorado and Utah. There are 11 members in the center where Monique works for Cristi Williams, Assistant Vice President, but there are approximately 4,000 total employees in the overall company. Monique enjoys her job very much – she is passionate about helping people and inspiring her employees to be their very best, and, luckily for her, SSFCU gives her that opportunity. Monique has worked at the credit union for six years. She was born in New Orleans, but she got to Texas as quickly as she could relocate to San Antonio in 1999. She is married with two children, and if that isn’t enough responsibility, she enjoys speaking publically. She belongs to Sophisticated Speakers Toastmasters organization. Monique is excited about joining EWI, and she hopes to learn new leadership practices along with sharing her line of business by networking with other professional women she meets within EWI. Please find Monique at our next meeting to introduce yourself to her – she’ll be watching for you.

Melinda Nail Omni La Mansion del Rio Hotel

Our chapter’s second representative for the University of the Incarnate Word, Melinda Nail, is the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for International Affairs, Marcos Fragoso. She is a UIW graduate where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Development. Melinda also holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Business Administration from San Antonio College, and a Dental Hygiene Certification from UT Health Science Center. Melinda joined UIW in December after working in the H-E-B Corporate Office for 13 years. She enjoys sharing the history of the university, which was founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. UIW is the largest Catholic university in the state and the fourth largest private university in Texas. She is very happy to be a part of UIW and will strive to follow the Core Values of the Mission of UIW. Originally from Brownsville, Melinda has lived in San Antonio for the past 20 years and is a “huge fan of South Padre Island.” She is a single mom of 13-year-old Jason and also has an older sister and brother living in San Antonio. Her hobbies include visiting the beach at the aforementioned South Padre; swimming; bike-riding and movie-going with Jason. She loves to dance and also sings with her guitar-playing sister at weddings, retreats and family events. She has previously participated in the Women’s ACTS Retreat Team as a member of the music ministry. Melinda is thrilled to be joining EWI, and anticipates becoming more involved in the community and developing great relationships with her EWI sisters. She looks forward to using her many gifts and talents for the benefit of EWI and the San Antonio community. With mentors like Damita Pape, UIW and Gloria Eastwood, H-E-B, she undoubtedly will accomplish her goals. We all welcome Melinda to EWI San Antonio!

Emily Kopecky Omni La Mansion del Rio Hotel
By Margaret Woods, Contributing Writer Emily Judith Kopecky was born in Rochester, Minnesota. She moved to San Antonio to attend Trinity University and has lived here for six years. Emily is presently Business Travel Sales Manager for Omni La Mansion del Rio and the Mokara Hotel & Spa. She enjoys the challenge of finding new accounts and establishing long lasting relationships with her clients. In addition she works on special projects for Omni. The Omni La Mansion del Rio Hotel opened its doors in 1968 and was purchased by Omni in 2006. Omni Hotels currently has about 45 properties in its growing portfolio. Emily says although she is not married, she has a wonderful family and a great boyfriend. She has a younger brother who is in college at Depauw in Indiana and a sister in grad school at Drexel in Philadelphia. Her parents still live in Rochester, where her dad is a cardiologist and her mother a nurse. In her spare time Emily enjoys practicing yoga, Bikram Yoga is her favorite. (Way too hot for me!!) She enjoys cooking and experimenting with new recipes. Emily loves to travel and her most memorable trip to date was on a safari in Africa. She is currently planning a vacation to Europe this summer, where she will travel to Belgium, London and Paris. Emily looks forward to meeting and working with everyone in EWI and becoming more involved in the community. Please join me in welcoming Emily Kopecky to our EWI family.

SAN ANTONIO SILVER STARS TO HOST 2011 WNBA ALL-STAR GAME AT AT&T CENTER -- The World’s Greatest Female Basketball Players to Showcase Talent for Fans --
NEW YORK and SAN ANTONIO, March 3, 2011 – The San Antonio Silver Stars will host the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game in San Antonio for the first time in franchise history, the league announced today during a special press conference held at AT&T Center. WNBA Chief of Basketball Operations and Player Relations Renee Brown, Spurs Sports & Entertainment Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Frank Miceli, Silver Stars Director of Business Operations Russell Warren, Silver Stars General Manager and Head Coach Dan Hughes, and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff were among those who participated in the announcement. The 2011 WNBA All-Star Game will be nationally televised on ABC on Saturday, July 23, at 3:30pm ET (2:30pm CT). “As we celebrate the league’s 15th season, we’re thrilled to bring the WNBA All-Star Game to San Antonio for the first time and have the Silver Stars and AT&T Center serve as our hosts,” said Brown. “We look forward to showcasing the extraordinary talent of our world-class players, and providing the community with an incredible fan and family friendly event.” “We are thrilled that San Antonio was selected as the host city for the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game. It is truly an honor for Spurs Sports & Entertainment and the AT&T Center to welcome the world's greatest female basketball players to our city this July,” said Spurs Sports & Entertainment President of Business Operations Rick Pych. “This will be a great opportunity for San Antonio's passionate sports fans to witness and enjoy first hand the WNBA All-Star experience, Texas style! We welcome the opportunity to showcase this premier sporting event here in San Antonio as well as to those that will be watching across the country and around the world." Last year, the WNBA hosted a special midseason showcase, “WNBA vs. USA Basketball: The Stars at the Sun,” in Uncasville, Conn. Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky was named MVP after scoring a game-high 23 points on 9 for 11 shooting from the field and grabbing eight rebounds as the U.S. National Team beat the WNBA All-Stars 99-72. The game was part of a four-day training camp for the U.S. squad, comprised almost entirely of WNBA players, which was preparing for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in the Czech Republic.

NIX HEALTH FOUNDATION HOSTS DIABETES MANAGEMENT SERIES San Antonio, Texas (April 4, 2011) – The Nix Health Foundation will host “Take Control of Your Diabetes,” a free diabetes self-management workshop, every Thursday from May 12 to June 2, 2011 at 12 noon in the Nix Medical Center at 414 Navarro. Make the most of your diabetes care and learn from local medical experts on how you can prevent diabetes related complications. Topics include diabetes and the eye, diabetic foot issues, the long term effects of diabetes and diabetic meal planning. Discounted valet parking is provided at the Nix Medical Center garage and free parking is provided at the Houston Street Garage, located at the corner of College Street and Navarro. An optional box lunch can be pre-ordered for $6 and beverages will be provided. The series is free and open to the public.

Easter Egg Hunt At Respite Care Center Thank you all for your help in making this a fun Easter egg hunt for the children at the Respite Care Center. Even though it was really hot and humid outside, we were so busy watching the children and as you can see the children were busy enjoying their baskets.
Thanks to all of you for making this a special day for them. We had candy and baskets left over which the facility will use on Easter day. We also were able to provide them with a contribution of $45.00 in the form of an HEB gift card and $30.00 cash. They will use this money to give the children a special treat as they see fit.

The Ways and Means Committee wants to thank all the Companies and Members that contributed to the March "EWI'rish Pot'o'luck Dinner" fundraiser. In addition to having a really great time, we were able to raise almost $1500 for our scholarship funds. We wish to send a special thanks to the following individuals and firms: Port San Antonio - Donating the fabulous location for our meeting, Stephanie Ramsey, Vice President, Marketing for the excellent and informative meeting and to Diane Skillrud for making it all happen. Fresh Horizons Catering - Caryn Hasslocher (Owner) and Stacy Yent (Event Coordinator) for their expertise, hard work, set-up, and contributions that made this meeting come together, and for the wonderful delicious bar-b-que meats.
