INTRODUCTION First off, congratulations! Trying horses can be a fun and educational experience. It is also a great time to be informed. At Maple Leaf Meadows, our objective is to pair horses and riders based on skills, needs and goals. We have put together this information package to make your horse shopping experience both successful and enjoyable.

PRIVATE HORSE TRYING SESSIONS MLM offers private lesson sessions for students to try horses. These sessions will be 30 minutes in length and will give instructors the opportunity to assess the partnership. A private session also gives students time to become comfortable with the horse without the pressure of a group setting or planned lesson. It is recommended that the rider try a horse 2-3 times before making a decision to ensure that they are comfortable on the horse in various situations. Session Cost: $65.00

ENDING TRIALS It is important that riders feel safe and comfortable, and students are encouraged to stop a trial at any time if they feel the horse is not their best match. Each rider has different needs ranging from discipline to horse characteristics and ending a trial will not reflect poorly on horse or rider.

LEASING A HORSE Leasing a horse is an alternative to purchasing a horse outright. You may choose to enter a lease contract on a horse for many reasons including but not limited to: avoiding the commitment of purchasing, trying a horse before purchasing, or because the owner does not want to sell. There is also the option of a full lease versus a half lease.

PARTIAL LEASE EXPECTATIONS AND RULES The leaser will be responsible for the following Maintenance Costs: BOARD COSTS The leaser and owner will each pay for half of the board each month. Boarding includes feed, staff to look after the horse, and the paddock the horse lives in. Some horses require indoor

board so boarding arrangements must be agreed upon in advance. The board cost also includes an administration fee. •

$262.50

FARRIER COSTS Farriers specialize in equine foot care and most horses are maintained on a 6 week rotation. The owner and leaser will take turns, each paying for every second visit. Prices will vary anywhere from $40 to $200 per visit depending on the needs of the horse. This information will be available before entering into a contract. •

Trim every 6 weeks - $40.00

Four shoes every 6 weeks - $200.00

VET COSTS Regular health maintenance costs including vaccinations, deworming and dental work will be split in half. MLM has a set herd health program each year so these costs are available in advance. •

Deworming charges are $25, four times per year

Vaccination costs are approximately $60 and occur 2 to 4 times per year

• Dental work costs can be acquired from Edmonton Equine Veterinary Clinic. Some horses never require it and some require it every 6 months. • MLM will add a $10 handling fee for all veterinary treatments that the client is not present for. • Emergency and unexpected costs will also be split in half. Maximum values for emergency care should be predetermined in the contract. LEASE FEE The leaser will also be responsible for the full amount of a monthly lease fee owing to the horse owner for 'wear and tear' on the horse. For a half lease this is usually $65/month for horses valued under $10,000 or 20% of half the horses value divided by 12 months for horses over $10,000. RIDING SCHEDULE Riding opportunities will also be split in half. Normally a predetermined schedule is arranged where the leaser and owner share available time on the horse. When leasing a horse at Maple Leaf Meadows you will also be required to be register in our lesson program. The minimum lesson requirement on a half lease is regular registration in 1

PURCHASING A HORSE Before you purchase a horse you need to find the right one. The following is a list of costs that can be expected when you are looking to buy: - Travel costs incurred while viewing sale horses. - Purchase Agent costs, if necessary. Maple Leaf Meadows can provide a purchase agent to assist buyers in finding the right horse. - Pre-purchase vet exam costs. Prices for pre-purchase exams can be acquired from Edmonton Equine Veterinary Clinic. These prices will vary depending on the extent of the exam which will be determined by the value of the horse and the need to evaluate any preexisting conditions. - Test Trial Costs which would include board as well as other full lease costs listed above if the purchaser and seller agree to a short term test trial. A short term full lease type contract should be entered in this case. - Hauling fees to get the horse home. This can vary depending on the distance required to travel. Once you find the right horse you will have to agree on a purchase price with the seller. This can range anywhere from $1,000 to $1,000,000 depending on the horse.
