and put in the attic, folded and put in drawers? Why do I panic at the thought of truly cleaning out a room, when most of the world seems to possess the resources to keep a place for everything, and everything in its place? We're all calmer when the house is clean, when we can find a blank piece of paper in less than an hour. The cruel trick is how much work it takeS" to keep everything neat and clean. I love to visit friends with tidy houses, savor the serenity for a bit, and leave feeling that I, too, could have a home this orderly. When push comes to shove, though, there are about a million things I'd rather do than clean. Attempting a massive organization makes me feel angry and aggressive- and not only toward the mess. The kids head for higher ground, grabbing up their most precious possessions and barricading themselves in their room -which they insist is theirs and they like it messy. When I've had enough - a time which comes faster each time I have at it- I call them from their room (whose disarray is a personal rebuke of my mothering skills. and I apologize 'in advance

to any future daughters-in-law); and teach them the only true rule of housekeel!ing. If you can't see it, it doesn't exist. If you're watching TV, your eyes aren't looking at the mess. If you're reading, you're in a totally different world, and if you're out of the house, you're unawar~ a mess even exists. We spend a lot of time out of the house in the summer. Yet, the mess is there and the house is begging for mercy. I make my annual August promise: When the kids go back to school, 111 get after the clutter, basement to attic, invest whatever money the plumber doesn't get into Rubbermaid bins, and make the whole family help tidy up for a few minutes each day. With everything organized and neat, we can paint the ceilings, maybe replace some old wallpaper, and enjoy cozy winter evenings in front of the fire. Perhaps this will appease the house, so the faucets will stop leaking and paint will stop peeling.

Kudos to clubs

Two longtime Bethlehem women's groups marked significant anniversaries this year. · The Delmar Progress Club, which was featured in a story in July, celebrated its lOOth birthday, :md the Bethlehem Business Women's Club, featured thts week, turned 50 this year. \j Both groups have · ·• evolved into something far different from what •· · they started out as. Both· initially were rather so. · · . cia! in nature, for the "white glove set." as one business woman member said. But it should be noted that the Progress Club took an early role in the betteiment of the community. Club · members more than 75 years ago had the vision to begin a public library, which is now the town's publi~ library .. Those early pioneers deserve our thanks for thetr efforts. Today the focus of the clubs is different, reflecting the changing role of women in the community. But the Progress Club and the Business Women's Club remain vibrant community supporters, sponsoring various fundraisers and funding scholarships for local students. Business Women's Club members also network with each other and the community, keeping abreast of mod- · ern-day concerns for women. We salute these groups for their community service and encourage them as they continue to grow.

Editorials

Sign off on rumor. Last week, The Spotlight received an unsigned letter viciously attacking a community business person. The anonymous writer urged us to probe into the matter. Most of the vitriolic comments of the writer were personal in nature, and none of our or anyone else's business. As we state every week in our letters policy boxes, unsigned letters are never considered for publication. And unsubstantiated attacks on individuals are taken as rumor, not worthy of consideration. We wonder if these types of letters would ever be written if the writer knew his or her name would appear in print. It's easy to vent a gripe when you remain anonymous. People's private lives, however, deserve more consideration and respect than that. The Spotlight makes every effort to report local news and every effort to avoid targeting individuals who have not been charged with wrongdoing. When that happens, it may be libel and certainly is irresponsible, illegal and reprehensible. It's alarming to think that someone would expect that a community newspaper would participate in a personal vendetta. That's not our job and never will be.

"Look Ma, only two small cavities!" Sounds good? Don't kid yourself. If you could look THROUGH each cavity-marked tooth you'd probably see that a Jot more damage has been done than meets the eye. When a cavity first appears, the enamel of the tooth has already been damaged. Belowtheenamel, the bacteria that caused the cavity in the first place may have multiplied and begun attacking the dentin (or core) of the tooth. If you continue to ignore the cavity, the disease process continues until the

·

bacteria starts attacking the pulp (or nerve) of the tooth. By this time you will begin to realize the extent of the damage because you will begin to feel the pain of a toothache. Unfortunately, by then it may not be possible to save the tooth. Don't ignore any cavity, n'? matter how small and inconsequential it may appear. Not if you wish to save your teeth. Early treatment by your dentist and regular check-ups are the only ways to protect your dental health.
