Be sure to check out the guides at www.tripadvisor.com.

You’ll find reviews for nearly 200,000 hotels and more than 70,000 attractions and 140,000 restaurants on TripAdvisor.com. Learn from other travelers what to expect before you make your plans.

PACKING TIPS 1. “Don’t over-pack! You usually end up wearing shorts, t-shirts, tank tops and flip-flops.”—TripAdvisor Member, Corona, Calif. 2. “Definitely bring more than one swimsuit if you plan to swim everyday— they don’t dry very quickly in the humidity, and it’s just yucky to put on a still-damp suit.”—TripAdvisor Member, Denver, Colo. 3. Unless you have very special equipment, forget packing a snorkel, mask and fins. They take up too much room in luggage, are clumsy to travel with and can be rented on Kauai cheaply. Often, a furnished condo or B&B will have them to borrow for free.

Inside

KAUAI Ask regular Hawaii visitors to name their favorite island, and Kauai is usually the reply. Called the “Garden Isle” for good reason, Kauai’s lush foliage and dramatically carved shorelines are due in part to the fact that it’s one of the rainiest places on earth–over 400 inches of rain a year fall on Mount Waialeale (elevation 5,148 feet). And, since Kauai is geologically the oldest of the major Hawaiian islands, it enjoys more miles of beach than the others. With all its superlatives, Kauai is a naturally cinematic place–in fact you’ve probably visited it before via films like Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blue Hawaii and South Pacific. Kauai is lower key and quieter than Oahu or Maui, and that’s just how the laid-back islanders like it. If you’re looking to leave it all behind for a true tropical hideaway, you’ve found your paradise.

4. A small backpack is “good for days at the beach. Put waterproof suntan lotion and bug repellent inside. I also make a small first aid kit and keep it in there 24/7.”— TripAdvisor Member
