from Pastor Aaron... Last week I drove to Laurel Ridge to help set up the teepee for Eco Camp. I have slept in that teepee several times as a counselor and staff person at Eco Camp, but I had never set it up from start to finish. Watching the teepee come together inspired a sense of wonder. It's very simple and elegant when done correctly, but I have to admit that it is a lot of work. Setting up the poles helped me discover muscles I did not know I had, and gave me a whole new appreciation for the caber toss during Highland Games. Before setting up the teepee, I had no idea how it would go up, and my guess is that most of the campers and counselors never think about how it is put up. The only time I remember someone commenting on its construction was one rainy night when they got a little wet (there is a hole at the top, after all). That's often how life goes. A lot of work happens behind the scenes that most people will never notice until something goes wrong; for example, we never think about the people who work to keep our power on until it goes out. As our summer vacations begin, I invite you to keep that in mind. When you're on vacation and things are going well, try to think of all the people who worked possibly countless hours for you to enjoy your hotel room, a clean beach, a relaxing drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or whatever else you might be doing. After doing that, give thanks to our Creator for them and the place you are enjoying, even if that place is your own backyard. Even when there are hiccups this summer season and you find yourself in that one spot where the rain drops into the teepee, remember that whoever you're dealing with (including the airline worker who had to announce to the terminal that your flight has been delayed another few hours) is created in God's image too, and that they might need a little grace in that moment. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you were the light of Christ in their difficult moment? Peace, Aaron

Thursday, June 16, 2016 Trinity Moravian Church 7:00pm The history of the Moravian Church is filled with stories of people dedicated to the way of Christ, both black and white. The 250th anniversary of Salem presents a unique opportunity to explore how who we were shapes who we are as Moravians today and who we can be tomorrow. Join us as Dr. Jon Sensbach, author of A Separate Canaan: The Making of an AfroMoravian World in North Carolina, 1763-1840, and professor of history at Florida State University, takes a closer look at St. Phillips Moravian Church, one of the oldest African-American congregations in the nation. Who created it and how has it endured for nearly two centuries? Examining the church's origins places St. Philips at the heart of shifting race relations in the Moravian community and beyond. It also illuminates the African-American struggle for self-determination and complex white attitudes toward the black church in America. A Q&A will follow Dr. Sensbach's lecture.

Moravian Mania, part 51 Last month's "Moravian
Summer Band Play Around
Mania" question was: What was the name of the Moravian settlement in Russia? That was Sarepta on the west bank of the Volga River a few miles south of Volgograd. With encouragement from Catharine the Great, herself a German, the Moravians began Sarepta in 1765, just one year before another Moravian undertaking on the far side of the globe, Salem. Despite difficult surroundings, Sarepta survived until the Moravian Church abandoned it in 1892. This month's question: What Moravian church in America boasts the world's largest trombone choir? Answer next month. - Richard W. Starbuck Moravian Archives
Summer Play-Around Band starts on June 1, New Philadelphia, Moravian Church. All band musicians are invited! The band will meet each Wednesday from 7:00-8:00pm in the church fellowship hall (on the God's acre side of the church). We will play chorales from the green and blue books that are selected by the players. A different local band leader will direct each night. This is a great opportunity to meet new players, learn a new instrument or part, and keep those lips in shape over the summer. Steve Anthony,

Band Instrument Collection The Moravian Music Foundation continues to collect instruments for its 6oth Anniversary Challenge. We are halfway to sixty! Any instrument, in decent working order, may be donated to MMF. We will then coordinate with the Board of World Missions to find a home for each instrument. In May, nine brass and woodwind instruments were sent to Sierra Leone. Also in May, participants in Raleigh Moravian's Community Sing donated funds that will purchase many more instruments. Call 725-0651 or
