THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Grace, mercy and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. Thanks be to God. (Standing. The congregation gives the right hand of fellowship, signifying oneness in Christ and the desire to be at peace with one another.)

T. WORSHIP (159 A) We covenant with hand and heart to follow Christ, our Lord; with world, and sin, and self to part, and to obey his word; to love each other heartily, in truth and in sincerity, and under cross, reproach, and shame, to glorify his name. (The service ode continues on the back page.)

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way after supper our Lord Jesus Christ took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. (The communicants will come forward by rows, receiving a piece of bread, dipping it into the chalice and partaking. After receiving communion, you are invited to draw a scriptural watchword for the new year before returning to your pew.) (After everyone has partaken, the minister will return to the table and say:)

Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death, Until he comes.

READING OF THE CONGREGATIONAL WATCHWORD FOR 2017 (While the introduction to the closing hymn is played, the congregation gives the right hand of fellowship, signifying renewed dedication and unity of purpose in the service of Christ. )

 PRAYER OF MEDITATION  First Sunday after Christmas

Grant that all people may hear together the song of joy, and find their homes in the garden of justice and hope, that we may experience the fullness of life, which is your will for all, in the coming of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Calvary Moravian Church First Sunday after Christmas New Year’s Day January 1, 2017 We welcome all members and guests to our service today on this First Sunday after Christmas and New Year’s Day. We are glad that you have come to worship at Calvary this morning! Please make a special effort to greet those around you in the spirit of Christian fellowship. As the red Ritual of Friendship pad is passed, kindly take a moment to write down your name, address and phone number. If you are our guest today, please fill out a visitor card and place it in the offering plate and pick up one of the visitor’s bags in the narthex! During the prelude, you are invited to enter a spirit of reverence and quiet reflection as we prepare to worship the Lord. We kindly request that you silence all phones and pagers. Hearing aid devices are available in the narthex; one of the ushers will be happy to assist you. ANNOUNCEMENTS Today is The First Sunday after Christmas. In anticipation of The Epiphany of Our Lord on Friday, January 6, we will share in the Sacrament of Holy Communion this morning. All persons who confess Jesus Christ as Lord are welcome at His Table. Scriptural watchwords for 2017 will be distributed during worship this morning. This unique Moravian practice involves the random drawing of a scriptural watchword by each worshipper. We hope the scriptural word you draw will speak to you now or at some important point during the coming year. The “congregational” watchword for the Calvary congregation will also be drawn this morning. The Church Office will be closed tomorrow, January 2, for the New Year’s holiday. The office will reopen on January 3.

Next Sunday, January 8, will be the First Sunday after the Epiphany and the day on which we celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord. During worship, we will also have the installation of the Joint Board for 2017 and our RCC representatives for the new year. After worship, we will gather in Fellowship Hall for our January Second Sunday Event, a church-wide birthday celebration for everyone! Come together with your Calvary family as we celebrate YOU! No matter what month or day your birthday falls throughout the year, we want to say Happy Birthday! We will have a soup and salad luncheon, as well as 12 different cakes or pies for each month of the year! We will also have a magician with us to add a little magical entertainment for all! See Amanda Schumpert or Donna Cheek with questions or for details. An orientation meeting for new Joint Board members will be held Tuesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the Burke Room. The 2017 worldwide Unity Prayer Watch will be held in January, and Calvary’s designated date is Monday, January 16, from 6:00 p.m. to midnight. If you would like to sign-up to pray on this date, a sign-up sheet will be available on the central table in the narthex beginning today. You are welcome to pray wherever you are located. Copies of suggested topics for prayer are also available in the narthex. The January 2017 “Calvary Connection” monthly newsletter was released on December 28 by regular mail and email. Please notify the Church Office if you have not received your copy by Tuesday, January 3. Copies of all Calvary publications are always available in the narthex, outside the church office and on the website: www.calvarymoravian.org. Both the Greeters and Flower Reservations notebooks for 2017 are available for sign-ups. The books are located on the lectern near the Sanctuary piano. There are several available dates during January and February for both flower reservations and greeters. The 2017 Daily Texts are still available. Prices for this year are the same as last year and are as follows: Paperback - $10.00; Hardcover - $14.00; and Large Print Paperback - $12.00. The Daily Texts are also available in the popular “Journal” format (includes a day by day calendar along with the texts) for $15. To order any of the Daily Texts versions, simply contact Paul in the church office (336.722.3703) for purchase and pick-up information. For payment, cash (exact change IS required) or check will be accepted. Purchased Daily Texts may be picked up from the box to the right of the church office door.

The Moravian Church First Sunday after Christmas New Year’s Day January 1, 2017

Threatened by Jesus Herod was a wise man. He knew Jesus was a threat. So he tried to kill him, in what we call the slaughter of the innocents, a preemptive strike against a political rival. Is Jesus a threat? To us? Matthew 1 gives a genealogy of Jesus, his Jewish ancestry. But then in Matthew 2 the wise men, non-Jews from the East, come to worship Jesus; then Joseph, Mary, and Jesus flee to Egypt, the country of the onetime slave masters of the Jews. And Matthew closes his Gospel with the Great Commission: “Go into all the world!” So Jesus is a threat to Jesus’ fellow Jews who believe God is concerned only or primarily about Jews. And Jesus is a threat to us if we believe God is concerned only or primarily about us, as Americans, or Canadians, or Jamaicans—or whoever we think we are. In Matthew 4 Jesus invites some fishermen, “Follow me.” And in Matthew 5–7, which we name the Sermon on the Mount, he gives a picture of what following him means. If we think we have become what we think God wants us to be, the Sermon is pretty threatening. Jesus declares, “The tradition, what you have heard, is just a start. If you are satisfied with who you are, at ease with how you have used what God has given you, I say that God is not done with you. You can be much more for God and your neighbors than you have been.” There is a bit of Herod in each of us. We see in Jesus someone appealing, someone inviting. But we also see someone frightening, someone threatening, who asks us to be different persons and a different society. What will we do with this threatening Jesus? Are we wiser than Herod?
