INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLUB OF TRIESTE REGION

MAY / JUNE 2013

Dear Members, as you all have certainly noted, Mary has become our new ‘Officer for Internal Relations’ and has been carrying out her duties with great efficiency. Many thanks to her for her effort in coordinating the communications between our members which is very important in keeping everything running smoothly. In the meantime Mila, our Welcome Officer moved back to the Netherlands and resigned from the board thus prompting us to co-opt Simonetta to take her place. The position of the Welcome Officer has never really been filled in due to the amount of travel in the lives of the previous officers. We would like to thank Simonetta for making a difference to our lives in such a short time. After having filled in our vacant positions, we are now tackling the problem of creating a new, more attractive and interactive website for our members. In the last general assembly held on April 9th, the attendees approved of the budget for this renewal and we are now in the process of entrusting the project to a professional studio. We look forward to have the new IWCTR website up and running very soon! We would also like to give a heartfelt thanks to Marisa for organizing the pre-Easter aperitivo on March 26th and also for contributing once again to our newsletter with the second part of her article on “The Women of Trieste”. We encourage such contributions that make a real difference to the spirit of the club! The IWCTR Board

...TRIESTE Trieste and its Women

Article by Marisa Tonel

Since the end of 1700 the chronicles of important travellers (G. Lavallée and G. Casanova) The beginning of 20th century was a time in Trieste where giants of European literature, like James Joyce and Italo Svevo, would meet, exchange ideas, opinions and read each others’ works; where the young poet Umberto Saba composed his lyrics about his tormented love for his city. Trieste was also a musical town and hosted musicians like Toscanini, Martucci and Mahler; only six monts after the first projection by the Lumière brothers in Paris, the first movie theatre La Fenice opened up in Trieste in 1896 and by the end of 1909, there were a good 21 cinemas in operation! At this time the city was ready to welcome all the cultural ferments of that age ,with particular regard to psychoanalysis which Doctor Edoardo Weiss, a pupil of Freud brought straight from Vienna to Trieste. How the new awareness of the inner workings of the mind fascinated the people and spread from the higher to the lower classes, is well accounted for in the book “L’anima di Trieste” by Anita Pittoni. The author also reported this revealing anecdote. She used to go to Piazza Ponterosso to buy vegetables and stop willingly to chat with her ‘Venderigola’ a wise and cheerful woman. One day she noticed that the vendor was not her usual self and looked worried. Asked about what was troubling her, the woman explained sighing that her husband had got into the bad habit of playing the football pools (Totocalcio) every Saturday. At Anita’s remark that, after all this was not such a bad habit, the vendor retorted that it was just the proof of her husband’s unhappiness regarding the life they were running together and that he was looking for a change. After a few days when the two women met again and the writer asked the venderigola about how she was that day, here came her answer “ I bid down my last card, I told my husband that if he was unhappy and wanted a change in his life, he should find himself a “baba” (lady lover), at least I would know my enemy and fight it accordingly!!”, the statement left Anita speechless.

Being the first to wear trousers (c.1910) the “Triestine” (the women of Trieste) went on fighting the Mussolini propaganda for women to stay at home and produce children, going out by themselves to the cinemas and cafès, or to sunbathe at the Savoia-Ausonia (naked in the solarium) or at Barcola and bearing no more than one or two children each. When Feminism ran high in the ‘70s, here you could hear from the true Triestine “What is this? We already had it!”. With such a background in mind, you shouldn’t be surprised if you see today, women of all ages filling all the conference rooms, theatres, cinemas, all kind of university courses, taking journeys around the world, always curious and happy to keep their mind alert and vital. And, perhaps, if you go nearer a couple of women of a certain age chatting cheerfully with each other and laughing, you would catch a whisper “God bless his soul….”

...Day Trips around Trieste Taking a walk in Strunjan (Strugnano)

Article by Jana Stupavsky

Down the really short Slovenian coast, between Isola and Piran, lies Strunjan (Strugnano) - a small village known for a beautiful church and a beautiful natural park, full of unique flora and fauna. It is a very suitable location for a 2-3 hour slow and fairly easy walking trip, especially on a clear and sunny day, when the views of the Adriatic and the mountains are spectacular. To get the most out of the visit, parking is free and easy right when you come off the main road that connects Capodistria, Isola and Piran. From there you can walk, following the asphalt walking path and eventually turn to the right, up to the steep hill, following a sign for the Church of the Vision of the St. Mary. After passing the church, the path leads up to a hiking road along the coast. The views of the Cape of Strunjan, the Adriatic and the mountains are truly spectacular. You can even take a short steep hike down to the beach and come back up. Following the path back down to the village, it will bring you to the Krka Strunjan Wellness Center, where you can have a cup of coffee after the trip. Motovun and Groznjan - A leisurely day in Istria (Croatia) Croatian Istria boasts many well hidden beautiful spots. Some are more known than others and the choices are abundant. The two small towns of Motovun and Groznjan (Grisignana), although 20 km apart from each other, both allow for beautiful views of the Croatian Istria hills, covered by vineyards and forests hiding delicious truffles (tartufi). Groznjan, located a little closer to the main highway than Motovun, is very artistic, full of small arts and crafts shops and is also known for its Jazz Festival which starts in late July. Motovun features a beautiful medieval bell tower and is known primarily for its dining and wining in the heart of Istria’s wine and truffle region, as well as the internationally recognized Motovun Film Festival, taking place also in late July.

Navigating the Jungle of the Triestine Dialect

by Cristina Caucci

After discussing ‘mulo’, in the last issue, we will be investigating again another oddity typical of the Triestine dialect, the word ‘mato’. Mato, literally, means crazy, mad. But in its current usage, the word has 3 meanings: mad, crazy - false, fake, - individual, guy, fellow. The oddest meaning of the word is no doubt the third one which somehow mixes a mato and an individual without further distinction. Here in Trieste, el mato (or la mata) can be anyone and the word is not necessarily intended in a negative sense. On the contrary, most of the times when you hear the Triestines say this word, be aware that they are simply talking about a third person and not of a crazy one... We find it very appropriate to conclude our investigation on this odd word with a tribute to Gino Rocca, author of a beautiful and touching comedy in Venetian dialect, which title is: “Se no i xe mati no li volemo” ie: If they are not mad they are not good!!! (Gianni Pinguentini: Nuovo Dizionario del Dialetto Triestino; Lino Carpinteri: Processo alle parole del dialetto triestino)

...things to do in Trieste IL POETA E L’ALBERO ISOLATO (The poet and the lonely tree)

Info provided by Cristina Caucci

An exhibition dedicated to Giuseppe Ungaretti, the Italian poet who was a soldier in the Carso and to the “Lonely Tree” (or the “Doberdò Tree”, as it is called by the Hungarians) which, for the first time after almost 100 years after the WWI, has come back to its original place. The mulberry tree was planted and flourished near the ancient church of San Martino of the Carso, and remained the only one standing after the bitter battles of the WWI. The “lonely tree” inspired Giuseppe Ungaretti’s famous poem “San Martino del Carso” and is an emblem of the enormous amount of human lives paid by these territories to WWI.
