Senior Olympics Attention All Participants! It is again that time to start planning and thinking of the Senior Olympics events and show our sportsmanship. This year is a little different. We are competing against other American Houses because Wayne County is not doing the event this year. There are many similar events that you are used to and it will be a great time. Applications are now available and will need to be turned in NO LATER than July 5th. The Olympics will be held the week of August 8-12th. Please look for updates.

Wayne and Washtenaw County Picnic! Please mark your calendars and plan ahead to join us on Friday, July 8th, in Hines Park at the Warrendale Shelter. The theme for this year is Mexican Fiesta. There will be entertainment, taco bar, costumes, Mexican Fiesta Bingo and other things. Let’s enjoy nature, comradery, building new relationships and plain old fun. Sign up before July 6th.

Lansing Lugnuts! We have the opportunity to go see the Lansing Lugnuts on Monday, July 25th, for a 12:05pm game. The Lansing Lugnuts are a minor league team just like the Toledo Mudhens. The cost of the game is $11 for the ticket and $4 for lunch (sub, drink, snack) for a total of $15. If you would want anything additional then you are responsible for cost. We will have a certain number of tickets available and will be on a first come, first served basis. There will be the possibility of two wheelchair spots also. If you sign up the money will be due at that time.

F.Y.I. Sign-Out Sheets! Please remember to use the sign-out sheet when taking a loved one from the building. The sign-out sheet is located in the front hall, under the activity board. In the event of an emergency, we need to know which residents are out of the building. Thank you for your cooperation.

Reminders! Laura Wilkerson FNP-BC of Advanced Medical Housecalls will be here weekly. Dr. Howell, podiatrist, will be here on Tuesday, July 26th, at 10:30 a.m.

Maintenance Reminders! Please make sure you call or stop by the office and have a request form filled out for any repairs that need to be done in your apartment.

Forever When I was young, I could run like the wild wind. The warm air of summer sweeping over my cheeks, and my long tawny hair, flying with me across the soft green grass. I was, forever. I would play in a dream, a wild horse I’d be, galloping pat the mesas, over the dry sands, looking for the grasslands. I was already bounding across. I could be everywhere. When I was young, time meant “always.” I could twirl on and on under a sunny, golden sky and touch the birds with my fingertips. Lifting up into their soft down, I could soar with them, up and up I could do, anything. When I was young and nimble, in the summertime’s sun, playing in dreams. I was “forever,” and thought, I always would be. Written by Joyce M.

Grandparents make a real difference in the lives of their grandchildren. We salute your contributions to family and the community. Please join us in celebrating Grandparents Day with our carnival themed outdoor celebration with a full picnic lunch and a lot of fun on Sunday, Sept. 11th, from noon to 2 p.m. We look forward to seeing you here! Please RSVP to the front office.

Baseball Game! There will be a baseball game at the new Jimmy John’s Field in Utica, Michigan, on Saturday, September 10th. This would be a wonderful opportunity for those who have not been able to get to a ball game yet this year. Our community is hoping to have a full bus for this event, so please mark your calendar. Further details will be available in the next few weeks.

More Beautiful!

Kensington Boat Trip Do you like nature, the sunshine and a boat ride? How about joining us for a boat ride and picnic lunch at Kensington Park on Monday, July 11th? The cost for the trip is approximately $4 per person. The pontoon boat can accommodate a few wheelchairs, but if you would like to go you need to be able to propel yourself or have a family member or friend come with you. If you are interested, please sign up in the Activity Outing Book located by the activity board. Check for updates if the date has to change due to weather or the boat not running that day.

The question is asked, is there anything more beautiful in life than a boy and girl clasping clean hands and a pure heart in the path of marriage? Can there be anything more beautiful than young love? And the answer is given: Yes, there is a more beautiful thing. It is the spectacle of an old woman and an old man finishing together on that path. Their hands are gnarled, but still clasped together, their faces are wrinkled, but still their hearts are bowed and tired. They still have that twinkle in their eyes, but they are still strong with love and devotion for one another. Their still small steps are slower as they seem to hold each other up. Yes, there is a more beautiful thing than young love. It is two seniors, holding hands, still in love. It’s old love they still have for each other. by Dolores S.

Interesting Cherry Facts By Brian K. Rosso, R.D. Michigan ranks No. 1 in the nation for growing cherries. I hope you find the following facts on cherries interesting. • Traverse City, Mich., is the home of the annual Cherry Festival. • Cherries, especially dark cherries, are a greater source of antioxidants than grapes, oranges, plums, strawberries and raspberries combined. • There are more than 1,000 different cherry tree varieties in the U.S. • It is believed that cherries were discovered around 70 B.C. • One cup of cherries has only 74 calories. • Cherries are actually part of the rose family. • The largest cherry pie ever weighed was 39,683 pounds. • Eau Claire, Mich., is known as the Cherry Pit Spitting Capital of the World. It holds an annual cherry pit spitting contest. • Cherries contain cyanidin, which is an anti-inflammatory and can help treat gout. • The average cherry pie has 250 cherries. • The annual U.S. cherry crop is 300 million pounds. Michigan cherries make up 75 percent of this count. • Michigan has 35,000 acres of cherry trees.
