Why Lord Byron loved Italian… I love the language, that soft bastard Latin, Which melts like kisses from a female mouth, And sounds as if it should be writ on satin, With syllables which breathe of the sweet South, And gentle liquids gliding all so pat in, That not a single accent seems uncouth, Like our harsh northern whistling, grunting guttural, Which we’re obliged to hiss, and spit, and sputter all. Stanza 44 of Beppo: A Venetian Story (1818). http://www.quotesstar.com/quotes/i/i-love-the-language-that-151880.html

LRC AND ITALIAN OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM… An alternative to your dorm room, the Language Resource Center (http://lrc.fas.harvard.edu) on the top floor of Lamont Library is a quiet place where you can complete your online assignments, especially the audio portion. It is important, and more effective, to complete the audio portion of the lab/video manual assignments at short, regular intervals, rather than one or two lengthy ones. Extra credit: you are encouraged to seek other opportunities to hear and speak Italian outside the classroom, for example, Italian tables at the Houses, Italian movies, Harvard Italian American Association events, House activities related to Italian language and culture, etc. The credit will be applied on a case-bycase basis in the calculation of final grade. FALL 2013 -- WORKING COPY -- SUBJECT TO CHANGE ITALIAN Aa (Fall2014)… Parliamo italiano! Course Description & Syllabus (rev. 22AUG14)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------PLEASE READ and KEEP for reference:

These are common mistakes or “lacune” that we find in student compositions. To progress in your writing proficiency, you should try to reduce or eliminate these gaps.

NEED HELP with learning/understanding how to learn Italian? There are two important resources for extra practice (and help!) in Italian: the BSC Peer Tutor Program and the RLL Tutoring Center.

1) The Bureau of Study Council Peer Tutor Program: Peer tutors are ordinarily Harvard College undergraduates who have received honors grades in the subjects/courses they tutor and are happy to help their fellow students with their coursework. Visit http://bsc.harvard.edu/pages/peer-tutoring to find out how to hire a peer tutor in Italian, and further details about the program. 2) The RLL Tutoring Center will open by the second or third week of the semester. Any student registered in one of our courses is eligible to take advantage of this free service. We encourage you to visit the Tutoring Center to work on your oral or written expression, reading or listening comprehension, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary acquisition, exam preparation and more! You may schedule a 30-minute appointment with an Italian tutor by visiting the website: http://isites.harvard.edu/rlltutor

Take advantage of BOTH services, as often as you wish/need, or as recommended by your instructor.

FALL 2014 -- WORKING COPY -- SUBJECT TO CHANGE ITALIAN Aa (Fall2014)… Parliamo italiano! Course Description & Syllabus (rev. 22AUG14)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND KEEP ON FILE

RLL & HARVARD POLICIES ABSENCES: Because language learning and teaching rely on active and consistent classroom participation, attendance at every class session is mandatory. After 3 hours of missed class, you will be required to speak to the course head to discuss your status in the course. For every subsequent hour of missed class, your final grade will be reduced by 5 points (for example: 88/B+ becomes 83/B-). After 6 hours of missed class, the course head may file for your exclusion from the course. The same will hold for frequent lateness and/or behavior that adversely affects participation and/or class dynamics. Exclusion is the equivalent of a failing grade. NOTE: This class has meetings scheduled during Reading Period so plan accordingly. ACADEMIC HONESTY: It is expected that you will complete all assignments on your own, unless specifically instructed to work with others. This policy also means that it is unacceptable to ask native speakers or more advanced students to proofread/correct your written work before you submit it. Rules about academic honesty, including plagiarism, will be strictly enforced. For University Policy, see: http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k70847&pageid=icb.page355322. The University considers plagiarism a serious offense, and it may result in suspension or even expulsion. ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Cell phones must be in the off position when you come into class, and laptops may not be used in class except for certain specified activities. ACCESSIBLE EDUCATION: Students needing academic adjustments or accommodations because of a documented disability are requested to present their letter from the Accessible Education Office (AEO) and speak with the Course Head (whether or not the section leader is also informed) by the end of the second week of the semester. Failure to do so may result in the Course Head's inability to respond in a timely manner. All discussions will remain confidential, although AEO may be consulted to discuss appropriate implementation. For more information, see http://aeo.fas.harvard.edu/
