It’s Time to Cast Your Ballot October is the month for casting your CHC ballot. Each officer and director runs for a 1-year term and may hold the same office for no longer than 4 consecutive terms. Our trustees serve a 3-year term. This year, 6 officeholders will be relinquishing their positions due to term limits. Two of those officeholders are running for a new position. Five officers are running for reelection, and 2 officer positions will be filled by a fresh face or someone returning to office. In many cases, only 1 candidate is running for an office. Our nominating committee worked very hard to find candidates, but as has been the case for at least a few years now, it is difficult to find someone to run head to head against another member, especially if one is an incumbent. We have 13 candidates running to fill 9 director seats and 1 officer position that is a contested race. I’d like to focus attention on the two Chief Pathfinder candidates, Ron Hueter and Dave Tobiasz, as each is vying to fill what I consider to be the most important office in CHC. The Chief Pathfinder is responsible, with his committee, for scheduling all the hikes, including recruiting hike leaders. Here are the responses of the candidates to questions posed to them: Are you planning to expand or contract the current number and types of hikes lead? Ron: Contract to me means losing members; there are all types of hikers in the club with a wide range of abilities and/or time available to hike. I would work to keep a wide range of hikes on the schedule. Some hikers like to do 5mile moderate hikes with trails and APT, while others like to hike 10, 15, 20, 26 and 40 miles with all different types of terrain, but just as important are our more senior hikers or hikers recovering from surgery or some type of physical concern that need and want the 3- or 4-mile leisure hikes. Dave: I would like to encourage new ideas for the various types or series of hikes — similar to the Emerald th Necklace series or the 90 Anniversary Hikes. In the past, we had Explore Ohio, the Buckeye Trail, 15 and Lunch series to hike the surrounding counties, and a series of hikes that explored Cleveland and its history. I would imagine that there are many more untapped ideas out there waiting to be discovered. We just need to encourage our members to try.

What are your thoughts on the current number of hike leaders? Are you intending to recruit new hike leaders? If so, how? Ron: I am not sure if there are enough; my concern is that I wouldn't want to hike-out a hike leader, to have leaders feel that they have to lead. I would encourage members who are not currently leading hikes to give it a try and lead somewhere that they know. Three ways that I would ask members to lead hikes: (1) ask them directly, (2) encourage the Pathfinder Committee to ask, and (3) put an article in the Newsteps. Dave: I would like to encourage our newer members to lead. They would bring a fresh look to an area, trail systems, and our community to create new and innovative hikes. We have experienced hike leaders who would be willing to help anyone who would like to learn on how to put a hike together. The “Scouting Hikes” are a way for members to experience what it is like to put a hike together, learning some skills along the way and having some fun. In the past, we also had a series of hikes from Camp Onwego. The hike leader would ask for volunteers to lead the hike for a specific time. The leader would act as a resource on the hike and assist the volunteer leader(s). Finally, what would you like the membership to know about your ideas for Chief Pathfinder? Ron: The Club’s motto is “An Independent Organization Established in 1919 to Promote and Encourage Hiking for Health and Recreation.” Whether you hike 3 miles or 40, a hike of any type will help your health. Dave: The Chief Pathfinder is probably one of the most important positions in the Club. Along with its Committee, we assist our members to schedule hikes and generate a clear and accurate schedule of hikes. Above and beyond the primary responsibilities and duties of the position, the Chief Pathfinder and Committee should act as a resource to encourage experienced and new members to take a more active role in creating new and different hikes. Be sure to get your completed ballot into the mail so that it arrives not later than October 21. The name of the voting member(s) must be on the outside envelope for your ballot to be counted. Election results will be available not later than the November General Meeting.

The descriptive reports often includes hike details such as when, where, who, hike distance, observations, and, when applicable, a map and/or pictures. Leaders of excursions also might want to report what happened so that general questions are answered and possibly to generate interest in joining future similar hikes or excursions. Remember, however, that “past performance is no guarantee for future results.”

Descriptive Hike Reports Peter Carlsson  440-543-7600  [email protected]

Your Club has a website that includes a section for hike reports on the Hike Data page (http://clevelandhikingclub.org/HikeData.aspx). Separately from hike leaders reporting participation on a hike (which is done to [email protected]), anyone who participates in or leads an exceptional hike or excursion can file a descriptive report on what happened on that hike or excursion. Hikers often want to know what happened on certain exceptional hikes or excursions, so if you were involved in such an event you are encouraged to report on it. Send your submission, preferably as a Word document, to me at [email protected]. I will include your descriptive report on the Hike Data page of the CHC website. Look there for current examples.

Please join us October 24 for a hike to help Gayle celebrate her recent unexpected retirement. The scheduled hike is 10 miles, with a 5-mile option (the 5-mile option unfortunately is not in the hiking schedule). The 10-mile hike starts at 9 a.m. at Squire’s Castle in North Chagrin. Hikers choosing the 5-mile option can join the rest of us at 10:45 a.m. at the North Chagrin Nature Center. The hikes end at Squire’s Castle, and we will have a tailgate there. Hot dogs and cake will be provided. Five-mile hikers can arrange their own shuttles back to the Nature Center, or we’ll provide a shuttle back. Feel free to join us for the tailgate at 12:45 p.m. at Squire’s Castle even if you don’t do either hike. We’d love to have you celebrate with us.

The 2010 CHC Holiday Party will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2010, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., at St. Mary’s Crystal Chalet, which is located at the corner of State and Biddulph Roads, just north of I-480. Reservation information will be provided in the November Newsteps. Our theme this year is “1,000 Reasons to Celebrate,” so please join us for fun, fellowship, and great food. The Holiday Party Committee is asking members to donate new hiking-related items for our door prizes. If you have anything to contribute, please call one of the following committee members based on your location: east-siders call Carrie Ellington at 216- 481-4088, west-siders call Rhonda Skalsky at 216-227-1311, and south-siders call Annette Hueter at 440-887-1990. Please note that this does not replace the “white elephant” gift exchange that will also take place at the party. Thanks for your help to make this a memorable event!

The Club is trying to track the why, where, and when accidents happen to facilitate change and prevention. Thank you for your support.

received complaints from hikers saying they've noticed people swinging the sticks and not being aware of doing so. We are a polite group, but sometimes we need to speak up and make the person aware. Think safety by learning or refreshing your CPR skills. The regional Fire Departments are offering classes. Some are even free, so let other hikers know of the upcoming classes at circle time. And finally, a gentle reminder: circle up in safe areas, preferably on grassy areas. Happy Halloween!

Joe Visitorski’s morning routine is to don his cool-looking Indiana Jones hat, then pause in front of the mirror and beat on his chest while hollering “Unga, unga.” After that he goes hiking and climbs hills like a young gazelle. Other hikers think, “Wow — look at Joe! He climbs hills like a young gazelle! It’s hard to keep up.” At the same time, Joe is thinking to himself, “Those guys are all climbing this hill like bunch’a young gazelles and I’m puffin’ like a steam engine about to blow. I gotta keep up.” Why are hills so hard? Eric Rawlins, in an article on Well.com titled “How to Hike Up a Hill” (http://www.well.com/~woodman/hike.html), offers this advice about hiking and hills: First, if you are breathing hard, on any terrain, slow down. Hikers use more energy by hiking so fast that they get out of breath, then stopping to catch their breath, then resuming the hike, than they do by hiking a slightly slower pace and not getting out of breath. Second, maintain a steady cadence; slowing down and speeding up requires energy — starting and stopping even more so. If the trail gets steep, shorten your stride rather than slow the cadence. If the trail gets too steep, then slow the cadence, but don’t make constant adjustments. If the trail is too rough to maintain the cadence, at least avoid starting and stopping as much as possible.

The excerpt below is from an e-mail sent to CHC from the Director of Marketing and Sales for Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR): It has been requested that CVSR look into providing a hiking program similar to our Bike Aboard program. Due to limited space and funding, we are not ready to offer this program on a regular basis, but have picked a date for a pilot program this fall! Here is the description: October 10, 2010, Hike Aboard! Join park ranger Pamela Machuga aboard CVSR as we journey south through CVNP. We'll depart the train in Jaite and hike 7 miles of the challenging Buckeye Trail back to Brecksville. Fee: $2 per hiker. Park and board the train at the Brecksville Station at 9:10 a.m., then travel south to Jaite. Hike should conclude around 12 noon back at Brecksville. This is a great opportunity for us to support reduced fares on the train for hikers. The October 10 hike and ride miles cannot be credited as CHC miles because the hike was not known to us early enough to have it on our schedule. We will work with CVSR in the future to allow us to get these special hikes on our schedule. Stay tuned for further opportunities.

Third, use the “rest step” on steep climbs. When stepping forward, straighten the rear leg and lock the knee, keeping all your weight on the rear leg, and none on the forward leg. The forward leg is used for balance only and you should almost be able to lift it without disturbing your position. Pause briefly, in this position, giving yourself a tiny rest; then shift your weight to the front foot and step forward. Repeat the sequence, straightening and locking the other leg, which has now become the rear leg.

 Sue Nelson had serious surgery recently, which required a week's stay in the hospital. Recovery will take a while, so the trails will have to wait.  Good news: Hikers Erika Galvin and Jim Harvey were married last April. Best wishes.

 Level terrain — Walk normally with a comfortable cadence.

Halloween Party

 The trail starts to rise — Shorten your stride but maintain the same cadence.  A bit steeper — Slow the cadence.  Steeper yet — Walk normally but lock your rear knee as you step forward, giving that leg a moment’s rest.  Super steep — Go to the full rest-step by pausing on the locked rear leg longer.

Donald Hornung 1928 – 2010 Victor Sandorf  440-842-0413  [email protected]

For many years, Don Hornung and Victor Sandorf ran the Put-in-Bay hike. It started at Catawba Point with a ferry ride to Lime Kiln Dock on South Bass Island. The hike went by the ruins of the old Victory Hotel, the grave of John Brown’s son, the artist colony, and other attractions. At Putin-Bay there would be a parade, a Boy Scout encampment, a reenactment of Perry’s historic Lake Erie Battle, and a symphony by the Toledo Orchestra. Some people say the Put-in-Bay hike was among the best the CHC had to offer. It went on for about 30 years and became a tradition until the two old guys could not do it any more. Then Ron Konieczynski took over. Don died August 8, 2010, as he was walking to his girlfriend’s house. His family of two boys and a girl live in Colorado. They decided not to have a funeral, nor was there a death notice in The Plain Dealer. Don’s remains were cremated August 13, 2010. A small memorial was held at Pickle Bill’s restaurant.

Public Radio and TV Pledge Drive Volunteers Needed

Kathy Wilmer  440-885-5660  [email protected]

Louise Melnik  330-225-5240  [email protected]

The Memorial Committee (Kathy Wilmer, Louise Melnik, and Matt Collings) met and created some workable guidelines for meaningful commemorative gifts to the Club. Currently there are some existing funds that have done such projects well.

Are you looking for something different and fun to do? One of our Club members has alerted us to the need for volunteers during the WCPN and WVIZ pledge drives. Many of us CHC members are regular listeners to public radio and television, and know the value they provide; now we have an opportunity to “give back.” Some of our members may already be volunteering at the public radio and television stations as individuals, and now there is an opportunity to volunteer as CHC representatives.

The Louise McDonough fund has provided scholarships, Kids’ Day at Camp, Kids’ Day in the CVNP for underprivileged children, trails, money for Shaker Nature Center, and a donation to a women’s shelter. The Charles Lally fund provides speakers for the club, and a tree was planted at camp as a memorial. The Jay Beswick Trail is another good example. Outreach funds have been given to the CVNP and its Education Center, the Sight Center, and others. Donations can also be made to the Camp Fund and the CHC General Fund. To the above existing funds, the Memorial Committee has four additional suggestions:  A hiking fund for trail maintenance, the creation of new trails, and monies for trail monitoring programs.  A fund for speakers on the subject of health.

 Library material funds to be donated (in cooperation with library staff) for the purchase of materials on the subject of hiking. Memorials should be in keeping with what the Cleveland Hiking Club actually does. Artifacts are discouraged. Family and friends of deceased members may contact the Chief Pathfinder to plan hikes in celebration of the life of the deceased member. A small social event along with the hike is possible. (The family/friends must provide the local hike leader.) As another option, a donor can give funds to be used at the discretion of the Cleveland Hiking Club. Remembering loved ones through options provided by the Cleveland Hiking Club can be both beautiful and meaningful to all who enjoyed the company of the deceased. It was the Memorial Committee’s intention to give such expressions something of a framework as well as a source of ideas.

The 90.3 WCPN pledge drive runs from October 14 through 23, and the WVIZ pledge drive will be in December. Volunteer shifts run from about 2½ to 4 hours, and 6 to 8 volunteers are needed for each shift. The first shift of the day begins at 6:00 a.m., and the last shift of the day begins around 6:30 p.m. Meals, snacks, and drinks are provided. The preferred dates for a group from CHC to volunteer for the 90.3 WCPN drive are Wednesday, October 13, Wednesday, October 20, and possibly Saturday, October 16, and preferably around the middle of the day. Dates for the December WVIZ pledge drive will be published later.

 Rental money for special sites to house CHC events not generally affordable (e.g., Garden Center, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, etc.)

NEWSTEPS deadline is the 10 of the month. Send information to [email protected]. Trip details should be no more than one-half page. Photos are welcome.

To continue to provide their programs, it is necessary for public radio and television stations to appeal to their viewers for much of their funding to continue operating, and this appeal is done in the form of pledge drives with the phones staffed by local organizations, clubs, businesses, etc.

Please call Louise Melnik at 330-225-5240, or send her an e-mail message at [email protected] to have your name included on the list of volunteers for this year’s pledge drives. If you are not able to help in October, but would like to help WVIZ in December, please let Louise know about that, too,

Camp Onwego “Scrape & Paint” Update Steve Paliga  216-524-8217  [email protected]

The ongoing major project for Camp Onwego this year has been scraping the cabin and outbuildings in preparation for painting before this winter arrives. Members Lee Schiemann, Larry Yenco, John Gabrovsek, Pete Kenney, Bob Maruna, Joe Brown, and John Edwards came out on August 20, and much was accomplished on this day. Thanks to them and to all the members who have been there at other work sessions to help with this project. These workdays are in addition to the normal work sessions in preparation for potlucks and other events held at the cabin throughout the year. I am Camp chairperson, but we are all stewards of Camp Onwego and I appreciate the dedication of the members who consistently volunteer their time and talents to show their appreciation to a club that adds so much to their lives.

Recording Pathfinder — Laszlo Prisko submitted monthly statistics report. See Newsteps for details. Chief Pathfinder — Ron Konieczynski asked for early approval of rough draft of schedules, as many Board members will be out of the country at the time of the next meeting. Kathy Wilmer moved to approve a rough draft for November and December. Motion approved.

Meeting called to order by President Jacobson at 7:00 p.m. Unfinished Business Committee Reports Membership — Alice Nelson e-mailed report. The current membership is 1,003 with 14 new members. Report on file. Social — Ruth Skuly will write a standing rule recommendation for Camp Onwego rental. Cabins reserved at Hocking State Park for next Memorial Day. Board suggestions for special events next year: line dancing, steak roast, clam bake, Mardi Gras, hiking technology, and first-aid and CPR.

New Business

Camp — Steve Paliga and a faithful crew are still working on painting the cabin. At Camp Chair request, Kathy Wilmer moved to spend up to $100 for the purchase of a weed wacker. Motion passed. Outreach — Shirley Pashall requested $100 for the Sight Center Cookout and $400 for Kids’ Day expenses. Funds will come from earmarked Memorial gifts and Swap Meet proceeds. Safety — Cleo Current requested permission to add Sue Portnoy to Safety Committee. Granted. Photo Contest — Matt Collings reminded us that contest information, rules, and forms are on the website and have been published in Newsteps. PC Support — Peter Carlsson reported a new solution file for retrieving photos from CDs. He suggested that the help files should be available on the website. Officers’ Reports Treasurer — Laura Dressler reports that monies are coming in as memorials for Ed Horvath and Ed Kana. The money is earmarked at the request of the families. Real estate tax: cabin property valuation is down, and taxes will be reduced. Club finances remain in good shape. Corresponding Secretary — Gayle Shroy is “juggling” various ways to handle the Club’s mailing to keep costs down. She currently is saving about one-half of former expenses for postage.

Dave Richards submitted a Charter document to guide the Change in Status Committee to research a change in IRS status for the club. Document includes background, objectives, deliverables, timing, members, and approach.

Kent Geist asked if the Club would be willing to volunteer to man the phones during the WVIZ and WCPN on-air fundraising events. (Club has done this in the past.) Consensus was that this would be a welcome volunteer opportunity. People interested in taking part should call Louise Melnik. The Volunteer Appreciation Dinner is sold out and has a waiting list. The committee is working to serve as many volunteers as is possible within space constraints. Photos on the Website — Any persons who object to having their picture posted on the website should step aside from the photographer. The webmaster can be contacted to remove any picture if needed. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad asked for participation in its hike and bike event. As it was too late to get the event on our Hiking schedule, we will alert the membership, but cannot sanction the hike for club miles. We will work with CVSR for future events. Matt Collings has been volunteering at various events to promote the Club by manning a booth or table and fielding questions, etc. Matt will continue to do this when members are available to participate. Discussion followed about various ways the Club may want to promote itself. Members should call Matt if they are interested. Peter Carlsson received an e-mail from XiaoYing Coffee asking if the Club would write a letter of invitation to a group of sports enthusiasts from China to join us on some hikes while they are visiting here in the U.S. Peter will draft a letter. Kathy Berlo made the motion to adjourn at 9:10 p.m. Motion passed. Submitted by CJ Keyes, Recording Secretary
