February 2017 “Many Powers Greater Than Me” When I got to AA, Steps 2 and 3 reminded me of my unsuccessful attempts at mental gymnastics as a child and youth at the Lutheran church my mother sent me to. I was told that only complete faith in Jesus as savior counted, and that was pretty elusive. I tended to ask wiseacre questions like, "What happens to the kids who are born in Saudi Arabia. Was God prejudiced?" An AA friend said that she was walking down a street in Canberra when a sidewalk evangelist accosted her. He said that she would go to hell if she didn't accept certain things. She said that the God she believed in wouldn't be that narrow-minded. The man exclaimed that, "God's very narrow-minded!" That reminds me of something Voltaire said: "God created man in his own image. And man returned the favor." I couldn't seem to find the bits in the Big Book or 12 Steps and 12 Traditions where they told how to take Steps 2 and 3, but I got a lot out of Came to Believe. With all the stories in it about how members were able to take these Steps, I would think just about anyone could find something they could relate to. In one story, I read that somebody came to believe that something was running things, and it wasn't them, and I could accept that. At a meeting last night, which included a reading about this Step, it hit me that I had always thought of it as being about finding God. But now I think is more about just accepting that I need help and that there is something, or someone, that could help me. One guy said that he told an older member that he just couldn't believe. He was told to just substitute "hope" for "believe" making it, "Came to hope that a power greater than ourselves could return us to sanity." That seems pretty sensible to me and something those who could only hope to be returned to sanity could accept. Refusing to believe seems more of a question of ego than real doubt. The world is full of powers greater than myself. I heard an anecdote once in which a guy told his sponsor that he just couldn't believe in a power greater than himself. He was told to go to the middle of the main street and take off all his clothes, and that he would soon see a power greater than himself coming up in a blue and white car. The only trick is to believe that at least one of those powers could restore me to enough sanity so I would not feel the need to drink again. Being surrounded by others in meetings who have clearly been able to do that, it is hard to not accept that it is possible. It is just a matter of accepting that I need help. —Jim F. Editorial: On the 2nd Step Having taken the First Step of the A.A. program by admitting that we were powerless over alcohol, we were confronted with Step Two: "We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." This Second Step is often referred to as the first spiritual step; but is it or the subsequent steps any more spiritual than Step One? Is not anything spiritual which tends toward elevating us to the best and highest type of human being we are capable of becoming? The Second Step contains the crux of the A.A. method of getting well: it shows us how to expel that little streak of insanity which caused so many relapses into debauchery long after the normal drinker would have shrunk from another drink. This twisted kind of thinking is eliminated by faith in a Power greater than ourselves. The question which naturally arises in the newcomer's mind is: "How can I acquire enough faith to get well?" The road to faith is by taking all Twelve Steps. Faith is acquired by working for it; it is retained by continuous use of the Twelve Steps. One who has gained faith in this greater Power finds such faith reflected toward himself. To the alcoholic this means faith that he will not take the first, fatal drink. But that is not all, for soon we learn that in some mysterious way our whole lives have been changed, our thinking changed, and our desires as well. Finally the realization comes that we no longer drink--because we just don't want to. The greater Power now becomes for us the court of final appeal. Those harsh judgments of people, conditions, and so on, which we made in the past are now left to this court. This is the way to tolerance. Our own ideals, aims and ambitions are also submitted. This leads to progress, and it is by progressing that we become--and remain--well. Reprinted from December 1944 Grapevine; Volume 1, Issue No. 7

The Big Book Manuscript Edit Was Vitally important! Bill W finished the pre-publication manuscript (Multilith”) for the book, Alcoholics Anonymous, in December of 1938. It read like a book of absolute prescriptions e.g.: “Thou shalt under pain of drunkenness,” e.g. :    

"Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path directions." "If you have decided you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it - then you are ready to take certain steps follow directions." "At some of these we balked you may balk. We thought You may think we could find an easier, softer way. But we could not We doubt you can." “. . . One who has all power - that One is God. May you You must find Him now!"

These few authoritarian (Thou must) examples are on page 58, but this theme travels throughout the entire step explanation pages of the Manuscript. In January of 1939, Bill W sent four-hundred manuscripts to members, friends and other allies for comments and evaluation. These were returned with only a few suggestions. However, Hank Parkhurst’s friend, Dr. Howard, a psychiatrist from Montclair, New Jersey, recommended toning down the use of “musts” to: “we ought” or “we should”— etc. Also, instead of the authoritarian word “you” to use the word “we.” (Dr Silkworth and Dr. Tiebout offered similar advice). After all, many of the skid row alcoholics had been repeatedly badgered by do-gooder advice at the missions. I believe this caused a major change in the tone of the Big Book—it immediately changed from a book of prescriptions to one of descriptions—from “Thou must” to “This is what we did.” I note that page 58 of our current Big Book announces: “If you have decided you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it, . . . What an appealing choice! A professor from NY University, Tom Uzzell, was paid $380 ($6,419 today) to edit the manuscript in a more professional manner which reduced the pages from over six-hundred to four-hundred. Another concern was the religious mode. Many wanted a religious tone (mostly Akron members) style while some New Yorkers favored the psychological angle. Arguments ensued! However, Jimmy Burwell came up with the compromising phrase: “God as we understood Him”. Bill called this statement a ten-strike! (Of course, Ebby Thacher told the same to Bill on page 12.). A scribbled in pencil “Too Groupy” conveyed that a phrase was too much like the religious Oxford Group. An example of this can be found on Manuscript page 43 . . . Bill had written: “When you awake tomorrow morning, look back before the day before. Were you resentful, selfish, dishonest, or afraid?” The words “Oxford Group” are hand written just above these words to signify needed change. This was changed to: “when we retire at night . . .”, etc. as on page 86 of our current Big Book. Without the above two major changes, would the Big Book have sold? I doubt it! Bill W wrote the Big Book, but he had lots of help. Thank you, God,! Bob S., Richmond, IN

DOES YOUR GROUP HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE? “When anyone reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there, and for that I am responsible.” Service work must be done or the effectiveness of the entire AA program suffers. Every AA group or meeting should have a representative Central Office Delegate to bring their ideas and comments to the monthly Delegates meeting. This representation is necessary for the Central Committee to continue functioning and to carry the message to the still suffering Alcoholic. Remember the Central Office was formed to handle these requests for help and needs your support to perform this vital service. Monthly delegates meeting is held on the first Tuesday of the month at 2290 S. Clayton St. in the church basement. Meeting starts at 6:30 pm.
