Salon Cymru Edition 2013

Jamie Stevens impressed by the sheer scale of Salon Cymru Speaking after the event Jamie said “Salon Cymru is a truly amazing competition on a scale I haven’t seen before. It was great to see such a wide spectrum of ages, skills, levels and work. I was honoured to be asked to get involved and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the talented hairdressers who will take our sector to the next level.” Jamie actively encouraged anyone thinking about entering next year’s competition. He said “Entering competitions will give you an edge over your rivals, but you need to spend time practicing and preparing properly.” “Winning a competition will give your clients the confidence that you are better than anyone L-R Jan Morgan, City & Guilds, Sarah and her models, Shirley Davis-Fox, MD ISA Training.

Congratulations to our Overall Winner – Sarah Louise Jones of Identity Salon, Haverfordwest Identity completed a notable double at this year’s Salon Cymru when they won the Overall Winner trophy for the second year in a row. Sarah Louise Jones, 23, owner of Identity salon in Haverfordwest only bought the salon from Marcus Scott, last year’s Salon Cymru winner, in February and was competing for the first time at Salon Cymru. “I thought I might come third in a competition but to actually win the overall award is a real shock,” she said. “I’m really happy and it’s nice to have recognition for the salon again this year.” In addition to being the overall winner, Sarah Louise won the Cutting Competition ‘A Tribute to Sassoon’ with model, Miss Pembrokeshire Emily Rees which was open to qualified stylists as well

as apprentices. Displaying her diversity as a hairdresser, Sarah Louise was runner up in the Barbering Competition ‘50s Rockabilly’, which was won by one of her staff, Abigail Peace, 19. Abigail, whose model was Adam Leigh Jones, said: “I can’t believe I have won because the standard was so brilliant and Adam had such hard hair to blow dry. It’s amazing to win in my first competition and Salon Cymru has been an awesome experience.” As well as winning trophies and £425 prize money, as overall winner Sarah will attend Afternoon Tea at the House of Commons on 17th June as a special guest of the Hairdressing Council and have a photo shoot courtesy of Salon Cymru’s official photographer Justin Harris.

“There has been fantastic use of colour this year which is key in our industry.”

“All the judges are saying that when you walk onto the competition floor it is hard to remember that Salon Cymru is a competition for apprentices – a lot of the work we have seen is as good as and in some cases better than qualified stylists.“

Thinking of entering next year? Here’s some advice.... I still do competitions….you can never win enough awards! The best advice I would give anyone thinking of entering next year is practise, practise, practise. Research your style on the internet and pick the model that is right for the hairstyle. To anyone who hasn’t competed here before or is thinking about it, get down here next year – get yourself entered.

to the salon you will be an absolutely different person for the experience. Scott Smurthwaite, Salon Cymru Judge and award winning salon owner When you compete in competition hairdressing you master the foundation skills you need on the salon floor like speed and technique. It gives you the chance to be creative whereas in the salon you may not get that chance very often. Enter, be creative, have fun and enjoy it. Steven Smart, Salon Cymru Lead Judge and 7 times Ladies British Champion.

An award for Shirley It was an emotional day for Shirley Davis-Fox, the creator and inspiration behind Salon Cymru as it was her last year in attendance as Managing Director of ISA Training. Shirley is changing her role in August and will become Chair of the Board which will allow her to focus on her wider role of being a spokesperson and ambassador for the Hair and Beauty Sector.

All your staff would like you to accept this award for your ‘flaming marvellous’ work and to show how much they appreciate you and the 15 years you have given to ISA and Salon Cymru.”

Shirley was truly lost for words. On reflection Shirley said that although she was shocked and speechless on stage, she felt proud, honoured, delighted, privileged and thrilled to receive the award from her team.
